Nose chine shape optimization study has been performed to maximize the directional stability at high angle of attack supersonic flow. Various chine shapes are generated using super ellipse equation. By numerically investigating the directional stability characteristics of those shapes, the baseline configuration for the shape optimization has been selected using the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The configuration is represented by the NURBS curves which can adjust the surface geometry by the control points. The response surfaces are constructed to obtain optimum shape which has high directional stability characteristics and lift-to-drag ratio. From this study, an efficient configuration design and optimization process which utilizes the parameter-based configuration generation techniques and approximation method has been established, then 29% improvement of the directional stability by strong vortexes from chine nose is accomplished.
The aerodynamic performance of long-span cable-stayed bridges is much dependent on its geometrical configuration and countermeasure strategies. In present study, the aerodynamic performance of three composite cable-stayed bridges with different tower configurations and passive aerodynamic countermeasure strategies is systematically investigated by conducting a series of wind tunnel tests in conjunction with theoretical analysis. The structural characteristics of three composite bridges were firstly introduced, and then their stationary aerodynamic performance and wind-vibration performance (i.e., flutter performance, VIV performance and buffeting responses) were analyzed, respectively. The results show that the bridge with three symmetric towers (i.e., Bridge I) has the lowest natural frequencies among the three bridges, while the bridge with two symmetric towers (i.e., Bridge II) has the highest natural frequencies. Furthermore, the Bridge II has better stationary aerodynamic performance compared to two other bridges due to its relatively large drag force and lift moment coefficients, and the improvement in stationary aerodynamic performance resulting from the application of different countermeasures is limited. In contrast, it demonstrates that the application of both downward vertical central stabilizers (UDVCS) and horizontal guide plates (HGP) could potentially significantly improve the flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance of the bridge with two asymmetric towers (i.e., Bridge III), while the combination of vertical interquartile stabilizers (VIS) and airflow-depressing boards (ADB) has the capacity of improving the VIV performance of Bridge II.
Aerodynamic effects, such as drag force and flow-induced vibration (FIV), on civil engineering structures can be minimized by optimally modifying the structure shape. This work investigates the turbulent wake of a square prism with its faces modified into a sinusoidal wave along the spanwise direction using three-dimensional large eddy simulation (LES) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques at Reynolds number $Re_{Dm}$ = 16,500-22,000, based on the nominal width ($D_m$) of the prism and free-stream velocity ($U_{\infty}$). Two arrangements are considered: (i) the top and bottom faces of the prism are shaped into the sinusoidal waves (termed as WSP-A), and (ii) the front and rear faces are modified into the sinusoidal waves (WSP-B). The sinusoidal waves have a wavelength of $6D_m$ and an amplitude of $0.15D_m$. It has been found that the wavy faces lead to more three-dimensional free shear layers in the near wake than the flat faces (smooth square prism). As a result, the roll-up of shear layers is postponed. Furthermore, the near-wake vortical structures exhibit dominant periodic variations along the spanwise direction; the minimum (i.e., saddle) and maximum (i.e., node) cross-sections of the modified prisms have narrow and wide wakes, respectively. The wake recirculation bubble of the modified prism is wider and longer, compared with its smooth counterpart, thus resulting in a significant drag reduction and fluctuating lift suppression (up to 8.7% and 78.2%, respectively, for the case of WSP-A). Multiple dominant frequencies of vortex shedding, which are distinct from that of the smooth prism, are detected in the near wake of the wavy prisms. The present study may shed light on the understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of FIV control, in terms of passive modification of the bluff-body shape.
Drag reduction of a running vehicle is very important issue for the energy savings and emission reduction of its power train. Especially for a solar powered electric vehicle, the drag reduction and weight lightening are two serious problems to be solved to extend its driving distance under the given energy condition. In this study, the ground effect of an airfoil shaped road vehicle was studied for an optimum body design of an ultra-light solar powered electric vehicle. Clark-Y airfoil type was adopted to the body shape of the model vehicle to reduce aerodynamic drag. From the study, it was found that the drag of the model vehicle was reduced as the height(h) between ground and the lower surface of the model vehicle was decreased. It is due to the reduction of the down-wash decreasing the induced drag of the vehicle. The lift was also decreased as the height decreased. It is due to the turbulent boundary layer developed beneath the vehicle body. The drag is classified into two types; the form and friction drag. The fraction of form drag to friction one is 76 to 24 on the model vehicle. As the height(h) of the model vehicle from the ground surface increases the form drag also increases but the friction drag is in reverse.

Numerical results from the "figure-of-eight" motion of Phormia-Regina in Part 1 indicate that vortical structure and vortex dynamics do play a critical role in lift and thrust generation. The aerodynamic force generation of insects' wing could be governed by aerodynamic parameters such as Reynolds number; kinematic parameters such as frequency, amplitude, and component of the figure of eight motion; and morphological parameters such as wing shape and the number of wing. In the present work, the effects of Reynolds number, reduced frequency and motion component are investigated in detail to clarify aerodynamic characteristics of insect wing. Through numerical results and their physical interpretation, the mechanism of aerodynamic force generation is presented more clearly. Rotation turns out to be the most important component in thrust generation and subsequent counterclockwise rotational circulation is closely related with thrust generation.

Helicopter uses a rotor system to generate lift, thrust and forces, and its aerodynamic environment is generally complex. Unsteady aerodynamic environment arises such as blade vortex interaction. This unsteady aerodynamic environment induces vibratory aerodynamic loads and high aeroacoustic noise. Those are at N times the rotor blade revolutions (N/rev). But conventional rotor control system composed of pitch links and swash plate is not capable of adjusting such vibratory loads because its control is restricted to 1/rev. Many active control methodologies have been examined to alleviate the problem. The blade using active control device manipulates the blade pitch angle at arbitrary frequencies. In this paper, Active Trailing-edge Flap blade, which is one of the active control methods, is designed to modify the unsteady aerodynamic loads. Active Trailing-edge Flap blade uses a trailing edge flap manipulated by an actuator to change camber of the airfoil. Piezoelectric actuators are installed inside the blade to manipulate the trailing edge flap.
In the present study, we investigate the flow characteristics of a quadrotor UAV in a hovering mode by measuring multiple two-dimensional velocity fields in the wake. The experiment is conducted at Re = 24,000 in a chamber large enough to neglect the ground effect, where Re is the Reynolds number based on the rotor chord length and the rotor tip speed. The rotational speed of the rotor is determined by an optical tachometer so that the lift force can be balanced with the weight of the UAV. The velocity field measured on the center plane of the rotor shows that the vortices are shedding from the tip of the rotor, inducing large fluctuations in the streamwise velocity along the wake shear layer. The strength of the rotor-tip vortex shedding is asymmetric with respect to the rotor axis due to the interaction between the rotor and the wake centerline of each rotor is inclined to the center of the UAV due to the pressure difference caused by the induced velocity. The wake from each rotor moves closer to each other while traveling in the streamwise direction, and then is merged together inducing large fluctuations in the transverse velocity. Due to the wake merging, on the center plane of the UAV, the velocity increases in the streamwise direction showing two-peak structure in the streamwise velocity contours.

For study on the unsteady wall interference effect, flows around a circular cylinder in closed test-section wind tunnels have been numerically investigated by solving compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a node-based finite-volume method with the Roe's flux-difference splitting and an implicit time-integration method coupled with dual time-step sub-iteration. The computed results showed that the unsteady pressure gradient over the cylinder is enhanced by the wall interference, and as a result the fluctuations of lift and drag are augmented. The drag is further increased because of the lower base pressure. The vortex shedding frequency is also increased by the wall interference. The pressure on the test section wall shows the harmonics having the shedding frequency contained in the wall effect.

Gravity current flow past a subsea pipe above a scour based on computational fluid dynamics. For comparison, gravity current flow over pipe above a smooth bed also calculated, this configuration conventionally employed to consider the scour effect from an ideal approach. Interestingly, there different flow features and hydrodynamic forces between the scour and smooth bed cases. These results indicate that realistic conditionvery important investigatthe scour effect on gravity current flow around subsea pipe.
The cooling unit of the industrial showcase consists of a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator. An axial fan is used to circulate the air to improve the efficiency of the heat exchanger. In the past, aluminum fans have been used, which have problems such as low performance, efficiency, high failure rate, and high noise. This study is to develop high performance, high efficiency plastic fan replacing aluminum fan. A major factor in determining the performance and noise of an axial fan is the angle and cross-sectional shape of the blade, which is suitable for raising the lift force, thereby controlling the vortex, which is the main cause of noise and performance degradation. In order to produce a high efficiency injection molded fan, it is necessary to develop a mold that minimizes the deformation of the injection process for the designed shape. In this study, we developed a high efficiency, low noise plastic injection fan with more than 11% performance improvement and noise reduction compared to conventional aluminum fan.
