  • Two explicit estimators of the scale parameter in an exponential distribution based on Type-II censored samples are proposed by appropriately approximating the likelihood function. Then two type tests, including the modified Cramer-von Mises test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test are developed for the exponential distribution based on Type-II censored samples by using the proposed estimators. For each test, Monte Carlo techniques are used to generate critical values. The powers of these tests are investigated under several alternative distributions.

  • In this paper, we introduce the goodness of fit test procedure for lifetime distribution using step stress accelerated lifetime data. Using the nonpapametric estimate of acceleration factor, we prove the strong consistence of empirical distribution function under null hypothesis. The critical vailues of Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling, Cramer-von Mises statistics are computed when the lifetime distibution is assumed to be exponential and Weibull. The power of test statistics are compared through Monte-Cairo simulation study.

  • In this paper, the author proposes a fatigue damage parameter of spot welded joints under proportional loading. The proposed fatigue damage parameter is developed based on von Mises' equivalent stress and local structural stress at the edge of spot weld nugget. The structural stress at the edges of the weld nugget in each sheet is calculated using the forces and moments that are determined by finite element analysis. A structural equivalent stress is then calculated by von Mises' equivalent stress equation. The structural equivalent stresses are correlated to experimental fatigue life of the spot welded joints. The proposed parameter is evaluated with fatigue test data of spot welds subjected to multi axial and tensile-shear loads. Sheppard's parameter and Rupp and co-workers' parameter are also evaluated with the same test data to compare with the author's parameter. This proposed parameter presents a better correlation with experimental fatigue data than those of Sheppard's and Rupp and co-workers' parameter. The proposed parameter should be very effective for durability calculations during the early design phase since coarsely meshed finite element models can be employed.

  • This paper presents the effect of varying boundary conditions such as ground subsidence, internal pressure and temperature variation for buried pipelines on failure prediction by using a failure probability model. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function incorporating with von-Mises failure criteria is used in order to estimate the probability of failure mainly associated with three cases of ground subsidence. Using stresses on the buried pipelines, we estimate the probability of pipelines with von-Mises failure criterion. The effects of varying random variables such as pipe diameter, internal pressure, temperature, settlement width, load for unit length of pipelines, material yield stress and pipe thickness on the failure probability of the buried pipelines are systematically studied by using a failure probability model for the pipeline crossing ground subsidence regions which have different soil properties.

  • We propose a test for independence of bivariate censored data under univariate censorship. To do this, we first introduce a process defined by the difference between bivariate survival function estimator proposed by Lin and Ying (1993) and the product of the product-limit estimators (Kaplan and Meier, 1958) for the marginal survival functions, and derive its asymptotic properties under the null hypothesis of independence. We propose a Cramer-von Mises-type test procedure based on the process . We conduct simulation studies to investigate the finite-sample performance of the proposed test and illustrate the proposed test with a real example.

  • Dynamic crack initiation in ductile steel is investigated by means of impact loaded 3 point bend(PB) specimens. Results from non-viscoplastic and viscoplastic materials are compared. Their materials are applied with various impact velocities and static strain rates. The specimen has the size 320${\times}$750 mm with a thickness of 10 mm. A modified 3PB specimen design with reduced width at the ends has been developed in order to avoid the initial compressive load of the crack tip and also to avoid the uncertain boundary conditions at the impact heads. Numerical simulations are made by using the FEM code ABAQUS. Therefore, their results are plotted by shapes of the von Mises plastic stress and equivalent plastic strain of the specimens applied by various impact velocities.

  • Using computational fluid dynamics with the fluid-structure interaction, structural effects of intra-luminal thrombus were determined in thrombosed axisymmetric abdominal aorta aneurysm (AAA) models under pulsatile flow. Four different models, varying dilatations of the aneurysm and Young's moduli of intra-luminal thrombus, were defmed. Compared with unthrombosed AAA models, both von Mises stress and radial displacements in the aneurysm wall significantly decreased. Stiffer intra-luminal thrombus reduced von Mises stress in the aneUtysm wall. The present study supported that intra-luminal thrombus might reduce wall stress in the aneurysm.

  • This study was analyzed dynamically by finite element method about the results of experiments which materials were applied by dynamic load. And they were compared with each other as the simulation data applied onto dynamic impact velocities of 6.4, 16.7 and 18.47m/s. The crack energy release rate, von-Mises stress and the displacement according to the load applied by block were calculated numerically by computer. As the numerical simulation data of specimen analyzed in this study approached the experimental data, the inspection of this specimen model suggested in this paper could be reasonable for the numerical simulation.

  • The paper presents theoretical and experimental investigations on three varying thickness circular cylinders, which were tested to destruction under external hydrostatic pressure. The five buckling theories that were presented were based on inelastic shell instability. Three of these inelastic buckling theories adopted the finite element method and the other two theories were based on a modified version of the much simpler von Mises theory. Comparison between experiment and theory showed that one of the inelastic buckling theories that was based on the von Mises buckling pressure gave very good results while the two finite element solutions, obtained by dividing the theoretical elastic instability pressures by experimentally determined plastic knockdown factors gave poor results. The third finite element solution which was based on material and geometrical non-linearity gave excellent results. Electrical resistance strain gauges were used to monitor the collapse mechanisms and these revealed that collapse occurred in the regions of the highest values of hoop stress, where considerable deformation took place.

  • In this paper, we derive the approximate maximum likelihood estimators of the scale parameter and location parameter of the exponential distribution based on multiply Type-II censored samples. Then three type tests, including the modified Clamor-von Mises test, the modified Watson test and the modified Kolmogorov-Smirnov test are developed for the exponential distribution based on multiply Type-II censored samples by using the proposed estimators. For each test, Monte Carlo techniques are used to generate critical values. The powers of these tests are investigated under several alternative distributions.
