For detecting a ground contamination survey, soil sampling method have been used a drilling or coring technique in general. However these methods are very difficult to systematically real-time monitoring of variation of contamination degree in field. ]'n this research frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) system was suggested and carried out to experimental approaches for determination of oil contamination on surface and underground. Experimental method using FDR method was discussed with feasibility of measurement in the laboratory column test. It is determined to degree of oil contamination due to response of dielectric constant re-lated with volumetric water content(θ/sub w/) and volumetric oil content( θ/sub al/ ) of saturated and unsaturated soil media. And physical properties such as effective porosity and oil residual ratio of saturated soil media were also measured through real-time monitoring works using installed FDR measurement sensors, which are defected characteristics of oil movement in the saturated soil media under the soil column tests. In the results of these experiments, a range of effective porosity was estimated to about 0.35 compared with initial porosity 0.40 of manufactured saturated soil media, which is also calculated to about 87.5% to the ratio of initial porosity to effective porosity. Finally oil residual ratio which is compared with volumetric water content and volumetric oil content was calculated about 62.5%.

This paper describes two different theories used to model the scattering of ultrasound by a volumetric flaw and a crack-like flaw. The elastodynamic Kirchhoff approximation (EKA) and the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) are applied respectively to a cylindrical cavity and a semi-infinite crack. These methods are known as high frequency approximations. The 2-D elastodynamic scattering problems of a plane wave incident on these model defects are considered and the scattered fields are expressed in terms of the reflection and diffraction coefficients. The ratio of the scattered far field amplitude to the incident wave amplitude is computed as a function of the angular location and compared with the boundary element solutions.
In this paper, we present the performances of a Doppler system using single channel RF(Radio Frequency) sampling. This technique consists of undersampling the ultrasonic blood backscattered RF signal on a single channel. Conventional undersampling method in Doppler imaging system have to use a minimum of two identical parallel demodulation channels to reconstruct the multigate analytic Doppler signal. However, this system suffers from hardware complexity and problem of unbalance(gain and phase) between the channels. In order to reduce these problems, we have realized a multigate pulsed Doppler system using undersampling on a single channel, It requires sampling frequency at $4f_o$(where $f_o$ is the center frequency of the transducer) and 12bits A/D converter. The proposed " single-Channel RF Sampling" method aims to decrease the required sampling frequency proportionally to $4f_o$/(2k+1). To show the influence of the factor k on the measurements, we have compared the velocity profiles obtained in vitro and in vivo for different intersequence delays time (k=0 to 10). We have used a 4MHz center frequency transducer and a Phantom Doppler system with a laminar stationary flow. The axial and volumetric velocity profiles in the vessel have been computed according to factor k and have been compared. The influence of the angle between the ultrasonic beam and the flow axis direction, and the fluid viscosity on the velocity profiles obtained for different values of k factor is presented. For experiment in vivo on the carotid, we have used a data acquisition system with a sampling frequency of 20MHz and a dynamic range of 12bits. We have compared the axial velocity profiles in systole and diastole phase obtained for single channel RF sampling factor.ng factor.
This study was conducted to develop a precision measurement method of water content in soil (find sand and silty sand) using dual RF impedance changes. The electrically stable perpendicular plate capacitive sensor was fabricated and utilized to sense the water content in soil. Crystal oscillators of 5 and 20 MHz and related circuits were designed to detect the capacitance changes of a perpendicular plate capacitive sensor with soil samples at various volumetric water contents. A multiple regression model for volumetric water content having dual oscillation frequency changes at 5 and 20 MHz as independent variables resulted in coefficient of determination of 0.963 and standard error calibration of 0.030 cm$^3$/cm$^3$ for calibration and coefficient of determination of 0.966, standard error of prediction of 0.027 cm$^3$/cm$^3$ and bias of 0.001 cm$^3$/cm$^3$ for prediction.
This study deals with the calibration of low-frequency water content reflectometer for measuring the volumetric water content of soils in landfill final cover layer, and the validity of calibrations was evaluated by electrical conductivity and index properties of the soils. Linear calibrations concerning volumetric water content to WCR period provided good agreement with the data. Analysis of the calibration data indicates that the slope of the calibration decreases as the electrical conductivity of the soil increases. Lower slopes correspond to soils with greater clay content, organic content, liquid limit, and plasticity index, which typically have higher electrical conductivity. It could be well explained that WCR can operate in a lower frequency range.
As research on a controlled environment system based on crop growth environment sensing for sustainable production of horticultural crops and its industrial use has been important, research on how to properly utilize soil moisture sensors for outdoor cultivation is being actively conducted. This experiment was conducted to suggest the proper method of utilizing the TEROS 12, an FDR (frequency domain reflectometry) sensor, which is frequently used in industry and research fields, for each orchard soil in three regions in Korea. We collected soils from each orchard where fruit trees were grown, investigated the soil characteristics and soil water retention curve, and compared TEROS 12 sensor calibration equations to correlate the sensor output to the corresponding soil volumetric water content through linear and cubic regressions for each soil sample. The estimated value from the calibration equation provided by the manufacturer was also compared. The soil collected from all three orchards showed different soil characteristics and volumetric water content values by each soil water retention level across the soil samples. In addition, the cubic calibration equation for TEROS 12 sensor showed the highest coefficient of determination higher than 0.95, and the lowest RMSE for all soil samples. When estimating volumetric water contents from TEROS 12 sensor output using the calibration equation provided by the manufacturer, their calculated volumetric water contents were lower than the actual volumetric water contents, with the difference up to 0.09-0.17 m3·m-3 depending on the soil samples, indicating an appropriate calibration for each soil should be preceded before FDR sensor utilization. Also, there was a difference in the range of soil volumetric water content corresponding to the soil water retention levels across the soil samples, suggesting that the soil water retention information should be required to properly interpret the volumetric water content value of the soil. Moreover, soil with a high content of sand had a relatively narrow range of volumetric water contents for irrigation, thus reducing the accuracy of an FDR sensor measurement. In conclusion, analyzing soil water retention characteristics of the target soil and the soil-specific calibration would be necessary to properly quantify the soil water status and determine their adequate irrigation point using an FDR sensor.

Engineered mixtures composed of rigid sand particles and soft rubber particles are tested to investigate their behavior with strain level. Mixtures are prepared with different volumetric sand fractions (sf) to identify response using small strain resonant column, intermediate strain oedometer, and large strain direct shear tests. The small strain shear modulus and damping ratio are determined with volumetric sand fractions. The asymmetric frequency response curve increases with decreasing sand fraction. Linear responses of shear strain and damping ratio with shear strain are observed at the mixture of sf=0.2. Vertical strain increases with decreasing sand fraction. Mixtures with $04.{\leq}sf{\leq}0.6$ show the transitional stress-deformation behavior from rubber-like to sand-like behavior. The friction angle increases with the sand fraction and no apparent peak strength is observed in mixture without sf=1.0.

This study was performed to identify the presence of measurement distortions such as electrode polarization and to investigate the influence of soil water content on complex permittivity at low frequency. In low frequency measurement using two-terminal electrode system, electrode polarization effect was observed at frequencies less than approximately 100 HBz. The analysis for real permittivity should be performed at frequencies above 100 kHz in order to exclude electrode polarization effect in the analysis of real permittivity at low frequency measurements. For a given soil, both of real and effective imaginary permittivity of wet soil increased continuously with volumetric water content. This is evidenced by the facts that the real permittivity is proportional to the number of dipole moments per unit volume and effective imaginary permittivity is effected by the conduction due to water. However, proportional relation between real permittivity and volumetric water content is valid at upper MHz frequencies.
We present a novel haptic sculpting system where the user intuitively adds to and carves out material from a volumetric model using new sculpting tools in the similar way to handling real clay Haptic rendering and model deformation are implemented based on volumetric implicit surface. We enhance previous volume-based haptic sculpting systems by presenting fast and stable force computation on 3D models to be deformed. In order to bridge the gap between fast haptic process (1 KHz) and much slower visual update frequency(~30Hz), the system generates intermediate implicit surfaces between two consecutive physical models being deformed. It performs collision detection and force computation on the intermediate surface in haptic process. The volumetric model being sculpted is visualized as a geometric model which is adaptively polygonized according to the surface complexity. We also introduce various visual effects for the real-time sculpting system including mesh-based solid texturing, painting, and embossing/engraving techniques.
This paper describes work on isolation of vibration related engine by a hydraulic engine mount with controllable area of inertia track. Automotive engine mounts are required to constrain motion of engine shake resulting from low-frequency road input of shock excitation and also to isolate noise and vibration generated by the engine with unbalanced disturbance at the high frequency range. The property of the mount depends on vibration amplitude and excitation frequency, which means that the excitation amplitude is large in low excitation frequency range and small in high frequency range. In this paper, theoretical works with model of the mount to reduce vibrations related engine were conducted. The volumetric stiffness of the mount is greatly changed according to the switching the area of the inertia track. Therefore, when the area of the inertia track is tuned, the transmissibility of the mount is effectively reduced.
