  • This paper presents a fast parallel algorithm for volume rendering and its implementation using C language and MPI MasPar Programming Language) on the 4,096 processor MasPar MP-2 machine. This parallel algorithm is a parallelization hased on the Lacroute' s sequential shear - warp algorithm currently acknowledged to be the fastest sequential volume rendering algorithm. This algorithm reduces communication overheads by using the sheared space partition scheme and the load balancing technique using load estimates from the previous iteration, and the number of voxels to be processed by using the run-length encoded volume data structure.Actual performance is 3 to 4 frames/second on the human hrain scan dataset of $128\times128\times128$ voxels. Because of the scalability of this algorithm, performance of ]2-16 frames/sc.'cond is expected on the 16,384 processor MasPar MP-2 machine. It is expected that implementation on more current SIMD or MIMD architectures would provide 3O~60 frames/second on large volumes.

  • This paper presents a real-time GPU (graphics processing unit) ray casting scheme for rendering isosurfaces of BCC (body-centered cubic) volume datasets. A quartic spline field is built using the 7-direction box-spline filter accompanied with a quasi-interpolation prefilter. To obtain an interactive rendering speed on the graphics hardware, the shader code was optimized to avoid lookup table and conditional branches and to minimize data fetch overhead. Compared to previous implementations, our work outperforms the comparable one by more than 20% and the rendering quality is superior than others.

  • Image registration is a process to establish the spatial correspondence between images of the same scene, which are acquired at different view points, at different times, or by different sensors. In this paper, we introduce a robust brain registration technique for correcting the difference between two temporal images by the different coordinate systems in MR and CT image obtained from the same patient. Two images are registered where this measure is minimized using a modified conditional entropy(MCE: Modified Conditional Entropy) computed from the joint histograms for the intensities of two given images, we conduct the rendering for visualization of 3D volume image.

  • This study was conducted to nondestructively estimate the volumetric information of peach and pit and to visualize the 3D information of internal structure from magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) data. Bruker Biospec 7T spectrometer operating at a proton reosonant frequency of 300 MHz was used for acquisition of MRI data of peach. Image processing algorithms and visualization techniques were implemented by using MATLAB (Mathworks) and Visualization Toolkit(Kitware), respectively. Thresholding algorithm and Kohonen's self organizing map(SOM) were applied to MRI data fur region segmentation. Volumetric information were estimated from segemented images and compared to the actual measurements. The average prediction errors of peach and pit volumes were 4.5%, 26.1%, respectively for the thresholding algorithm. and were 2.1%, 19.9%. respectively for the SOM. Although we couldn't get the statistically meaningful results with the limited number of samples, the average prediction errors were lower when the region segmentation was done by SOM rather than thresholding. The 3D visualization techniques such as isosurface construction and volume rendering were successfully implemented, by which we could nondestructively obtain the useful information of internal structures of peach.

Abstract This paper presents an efficient cell-based wavelet compression method of large volume data. Volume data is divided into individual cell of {{}} voxels, and then wavelet transform is applied to each cell. The transformed cell is run-length encoded according to the reconstruction order resulting in a fairly good compression ratio and fast reconstruction. A cache structure is used to speed up the process of reconstruction and a threshold normalization scheme is presented to produce a higher quality rendered image. We have combined our compression method with shear-warp factorization, which is an accelerated volume rendering algorithm. Experimental results show the space requirement to be about 27:1 and the rendering time to be about 3 seconds for {{}} data sets while preserving the quality of an image as like as using original data.

  • This study is to design and produce a detailed model for volume variety of three dimensional reconstruction images and to evaluate the changes of volume, area and the length of the model in the process of the reconstruction of RTP system. CT simulation was operated at the thickness of 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10mm and average, standard deviation of scan direction(X), thickness(Y), table movement direction(Z), area(A), and volume(V) of the three dimensional volume rendering, were measured according to the shape and thickness of the phantoms. As a result, at the thickness of 1.25, 2.5min, the phantom's shape decreased maximum 0.13cm(p<0.05) to the direction of X, Y, Z and length, area, volume decreased 0.1cm, $0.8cm^2$, $3.99cm^3$ which led to an approximate image of the phantoms. However, at the thickness of 5, 10mm, the phantom of the original form decreased maximum 0.58cm(p<0.05) and volume, area, length decreased maximum 0.45cm, $8.21cm^2$, $11.03cm^3$. Volume varieties according to the thickness and shape of the phantoms have occurred diversely, when CT simulation was operated, and it is considered that a clinically appropriate volume rendering can be obtained only when the thickness is below 3mm.

  • In this paper, OSP(Octal Space Partitioning) tree is proposed for the real time culling of infinite sets of geometries in interactive Virtual Environment applications. And MSVBSP(Modified Shadow Volume BSP) tree is suggested for the occlusion culling. Experimental results show that the OSP and MSVBSP tree are efficiently implemented in real time rendering of interactive geometries.

  • A 69-year old male with cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCC) was assigned to our department for whole body PET/CT scan. $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT images showed an intense hypermetabolic lobulating mass(SUVmax = 8.7 / size : 11.4 mm) in the right hepatic lobe with multiple metastatic lung nodules. We made three dimensional volume rendering fusion images by using advantage workstation 4.3 (GE health care) which provide quick anatomic overview and improve the planning process significantly.

  • 3D CAD technology has been extended to a medical area including dental clinic beyond industrial design. The 2D images obtained by CT(Computerized Tomography) and MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) are not intuitive, and thus the volume rendering technique, which transforms 2D data into 3D anatomic information, has been in practical use. This paper has focused on a method and its implementation for forming 3D geometric surface model from laminated CT images of the pubis. The implemented system could support a dental clinic to observe and examine the status of a patient's pubis before implant surgery. The supplement of 3D implant model would help dental surgeons settle operation plans more safely and confidently. It also would be utilized with teaching materials for a practice and training.
