  • The ability of remote sensing and GIS technique, which used to provide valuable informations in the time and space domain, has been known to be very useful in providing permanent records by mapping and monitoring flooded area. In 2000, floods were at the worst stage of devastation in Tonle Sap Lake, Mekong River Basin, for the second time in records during July and October. In this study, Landsat ETM+ and RADARSAT imagery were used to obtain the basic information on computation of the inundation area and volume using ISODATA classifier and segmentation technique. However, the extracted inundatton area showed only a small fraction than the actually inundated area because of clouds in the imagery and complex ground conditions. To overcome these limitations, the cost-distance method of GIS was used to estimate the inundated area at the peak level by integrating the inundated area from satellite imagery in corporation with digital elevation model (DEM). The estimated inundation area was simply converted with the inundation volume using GIS. The inundation volume was compared with the volume based on hydraulic modeling with MIKE 11. which is the most poppular among the dynamic river modeling system. The method is suitable for estimating inundation volume even when Landsat ETM+ has many clouds in the imagery.

  • The variation of groundwater level in Jeju Island is analyzed with the data of precipitation observed from 48 monitoring post and groundwater level observed from 84 monitoring wells during 2001 to 2009. The groundwater level rises in summer and falls in winter. The rise of groundwater level by precipitation is fast and small in the eastern region and slow and large in the western region. However, the speed of fall during the period of no rain is slower in the eastern region than in the western region. It tells that permeability is greater in the eastern region than in the western region. In this paper, we set up the base level of groundwater and calculate recharge volume between the base level and groundwater surface. During the period, the average recharge volume was $9.83{\times}10^9m^3$ and the maximum recharge volume was $2.667{\times}10^{10}m^3$ after the typhoon Nari. With these volume and the recharge masses obtained by applying the recharge ratio of 46.1%, estimated by Jeju Province (2003), the porous ratio over the whole Jeju Island is 16.8% in average and 4.6% in the case of maximum recharge volume just after typhoon Nari. A large difference in the two ratios is because that it takes time for groundwater permeated through the ground just after rain fall to fill up the empty porous part. Although the porous ratios over the whole Jeju Island obtained in this way has a large error, they give us the advantage to roughly estimate the amount of recharged groundwater mass directly from observing the groundwater level.

  • To assess the port development and maritime traffic environment, the future traffic volume has been estimated using the number of inbound and outbound vessel for a specific port. The estimation of future traffic volume should be considered as an important factor to establish the degree of fairway congestion, the determination of fairway width and the operational role. Until now, the number of in and out vessel for the port has been only estimated mainly, but the type and size of inbound and outbound ships are different depending on the port's characteristics. So, it is difficult to estimate the future traffic volume using the change of only one item. This paper calculates the future traffic volume using the marine traffic characteristic factors as the number of coastal ship and ocean-going ship, the size of ship and the change of cargo volume per a ship etc. And it compared with the results of Artificial Neural Network(ANN) for accurate identification of nonlinear system.

  • Pulmonary function is the determinant of blood gas tension. However, Acid-Base disturbances can also alter partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide in arterial blood. During respiratory acidosis $PO_2$ will be lowered and reverse changes will be produced during respiratory alkalosis. On the other hand, in metabolic acidosis $PO_2$ will be elevated and $PCO_2$ will be lowered by the respiratory compensation, and reverse response will be induced in metabolic alkalosis. Urinary gas tension has many influencing factors than arterial blood and difficult to estimate the tendency of its alterations. Urinary $PO_2$ and $PCO_2$ are not always identical level as venous blood. It is to be altered by blood gas tension, flow rate of urine, metabolic rate of kidney, and Acid-Base status of blood. Particularly countercurrent exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the renal medulla will make larger alteration of gas tension than venous blood. After induction of Acid-Base disturbances [disturbances] arterial and urinary $PCO_2$, $PO_2$, urinary volume, and osmolarity were determined in dogs, and the relationships between arterial and urinary $PCO_2$ , $PO_2$ Acid-Base disturbances, urinary volume, and osmolarity were investigated. 1. During the acute Metabolic and Respiratory disturbances urinary pH did not respond on respiratory origin. However, there were immediate urinary response in pH on metabolic origin. 2. Urinary $PO_2$, $PCO_2$, did not always follow arterial or venous gas tension and Acid-Base disturbance. Urinary $PCO_2$, correlate well with the urinary volume. The larger the urinary volume, $PCO_2$ lowered to the venous level. The smaller the urinary volume, urinary $PCO_2$ tends to be higher. However urinary $PO_2$ did not have any particular correlation with urinary volume. 3. Correlation between urinary $PCO_2$ and $PO_2$ were inversely proportional to arterial blood. Differences of $PCO_2$ between arterial blood and urine also did not have any particular correlation with urinary volume. This may suggest that changes on blood gas tensions can influence on urinary $PCO_2$. 4. There were eminent clear inverse correlation between urinary $PCO_2$ and osmolar concentrations of urine. Above results strongly suggest that partial pressure of gas in urine primarily depend upon counter-current exchanges in renal medullary tissues.

  • In this study, the process of drone photography, automatic volume calculation, total floor area conversion, and waste calculation was constructed as a QGIS plug-in to predict the demolition waste (DW) generated in an aged area where drawing information or building information is uncertain. Through a case study, the high consistency between the automatically calculated volume using the drone and the BIM volume based on the field measurement was confirmed. Field application was carried out for the planned demolition work site, and the consistency between the drone-based volume and the actual measurement-BIM-based volume was reconfirmed. The waste generation unit was applied and the amount of DW was calculated by setting the floor height and building type, and the entire process was completed within 6 hours. Although the difference between building information and building objects through drones occurred according to the setting of temporary structures, loads, and floor heights, it was found that the actual amount of DW was generated more than the initial estimate. It is expected that measures to improve the accuracy of volume and floor area conversion will be required through case studies in the future.

  • The body segment parameters of twelve young male Korean were measured to compare with the results of foreign cadaver studies. A human body was assumed to have fourteen body segments. The mass of each segment was measured with a water immersion test and the mass center of a segment was determined on the balance platform by changing postures. In the case of Korean, because of the difference in body proportion, the mass center of whole-body is located further from the distal end of head(Korean : 44.9% vs. Caucasian : 41.2%), and the mass center of each segment also located in different proportional locations. The existing regression equations, which can estimate segment mass based upon the anthropometric dimensions, estimates segment mass (the mass of shank) for Korean with 13% error. Therefore, it is not recommended to estimate the mass, and the moment of inertia of body segment of Korean based on the existing equations. However, the density information of body constituents was similar enough to apply it to Korean density. It was validated by the comparison between the results of the direct immersion method and 3-dimensional volume reconstruction of segment form the cross sectional images of CT-scan. The average body density measured form twelve subjects was $1.035{\;}kg/m^3$ and showed deceasing trendency.

  • One of the most difficult problem to estimate the flood inflow is how to understand the effective rainfall. The effective rainfall is absolutely influenced by the condition of soil moisture in the watershed just before the storm event. DAWAST model developed to simulate the daily streamflow considering the meteologic and geographic characteristics in the Korean watersheds was applied to understand the soil moisture and estimate the effective rainfall rather accurately through the daily water balance in the watershed. From this soil moisture and effective rainfall, concentration time, dimensionless hydrograph, and addition of baseflow, the rainfall-runoff model for flood flow was developed by converting the concept of long-term runoff into short-term runoff. And, real-time flood forecasting model was also developed to forecast the flood-inflow hydrograph to the river and reservoir, and called RETFLO model. According to the model verification, RETFLO model can be practically applied to the medium and small river and reservoir to forecast the flood hydrograph with peak discharge, peak time, and volume. Consequently, flood forecasting and warning system in the river and the reservoir can be greatly improved by using personal computer.

  • Reliable velocity estimation technology for trains is one of technologies used to operate trains safely and effectively. Various sensors such as tachometers, doppler radars, and global positioning systems are used to estimate velocity of a train. Tachometer is widely used to estimate velocity of a trains due to its simplicity, small volume, cost-effectiveness, continuously measurement at high speed, and robustness against noise. Accuracy in the velocity calculation using a tachometer depends on quantization error, measurement error of wheel radius or diameter, and tachometer's imperfection from manufacturing or installation process. In this paper, we present an accurate velocity estimation method using a low-resolution tachometer, which is commonly installed on a high-speed train. Baseline estimation method is proposed to accurately calculate the velocity of the high-speed train from tachometer's pulses. HEMU-430x test train is used for the experiment and verification of the proposed method. Experimental results with several routes show that the proposed method is more accurate than a conventional method.

  • Construction cost of tunnel is decided on construction area, site conditions, and construction methods. However, there is few research on developing models to estimate early construction costs. Therefore, this paper presents a model for early estimation tool for NATM tunnel using system thinking. The effect factors for tunnel construction cost were defined and the causal map is developed. Then empirical case analysis were performed to identify the cost difference due to tunnel length, excavation volume, and rock quality. The proposed model would be an alternative to estimate early construction cost of NATM tunnel.

  • Daily monitoring of the heart rate can facilitate detection of heart-related diseases in their early stages. Therefore, providing an easy-to-use and noninvasive heart rate monitoring system has been a very popular research topic in the field of healthcare. One of good candidate methods is to use commonly available cameras and extract information that can help to estimate heart rate from a human face. Generally, such information can be retrieved using two different approaches: photoplethysmography (PPG) and ballistocardiography (BCG). PPG exploits slight color changes caused by blood volume variations during heartbeats; thus, it tends to be vulnerable to unstable lighting conditions. BCG exploits subtle head motions caused by pumped blood travelling through the carotid artery during heartbeats; thus, it is vulnerable to the voluntary head movements that are not related to heartbeats. Nevertheless, most related works use either to estimate the heart rate. In this paper, we propose to combine two approaches to be robust to challenging conditions. Specifically, we explore possible ways to combine raw signals obtained from two approaches and verify that the proposed combination shows better accuracies under challenging conditions, such as voluntary head movements and ambient lighting changes.
