Modern volcanoes, Laoheishan and Huoshaoshan, have erupted during $1720\~1721$ in the Wudalianchi volcanic group, NE china. They comprise scoria and spatter cones that consist of potassium-rich phono-tephritic pyroclastic deposits and lavas, and include wide lava flow fields. The Laoheishan scoria cone is a polygenetic multiple volcano that overlaps earlier and later edifices with more complicated internal structures produced in greater scale and in earlier time than the Huoshaoshan. There is a funnel-shaped crater in the center of the later edifice of the Laoheishan scoria cone. The Huoshaoshan spatter cone is a monogenetic simple volcano with a central pit crater. The volcanic sequences indicate eruption processes that followed a repeated pattern that progressed through 5 stages of explosive and effusive eruption including lava fountains and Strombolian eruptions in the Laoheishan, and a recognizable pattern of 2 stages that started with Strombolian eruption and progressed through lava effusion in the Huoshaoshan.
Seismic reflection data can be used to extract information about the velocity structure of the earth. This process is called a velocity inversion of the seismic data. However, it is difficult to recover a broad band reflection coefficient series because the frequency band of seismic trace is limited. The linear programming method has been examined to find the simplest velocity model that has frequency components consistent with the usable frequencies of the seismic trace and interval velocity data. The velocity structure of the earth is displayed in pseudovelocity section. After the linear program had been tested with a synthetic seismic trace, it was applied to the seismic reflection data of the Block Ⅱ in the Yellow Sea. By comparing the pseudovelocity section with sonic logs obtained from the well in the same area, it was possible to define the lithostratigraphy and the boundaries of Cretaceous volcanics and Cretaceous metavolcanics.
Base metal sulfides occur in the Huronian sedimentary rocks that cover the Archean volcanic rocks in the Cobalt area, Ontario, Canada. They are mostly concentrated in the basal conglomerate which was formed in the pre-Huronian basin structure. Sulfide occurrence can be grouped as massive sulfide clasts in the basal and Coleman conglomerate, disseminated sulfides throughout the sediments, and disseminated sulfides near Ag-Co-Ni-As carbonate veins. Detrital mechanism can explain features such as angularity of sulfide fragments and graded bedding of dissemnated sulfides. Sulfides concentrated near carbonate veins are probably of hydrothermal origin. Nearby strata-bound type massive sulfide ore deposits and mineralized interflow units are the most probable sources for syngenetic sulfides. This is supported by the angularity of sulfide fragments, presence of massive sulfide boulders which are identical in mineralogy and texture to the strata-bound type sulfide deposits in the Archean basement, and a similar composition of sphalerite in the Archean volcanic rocks and Huronian sedimentary rocks. Some sulfide grains, especially in sandstones and argillites, were undergone recrystallization during the intrusion of the Nipissing diabase.
The northeastern part of Ogcheon zone which consisted mainly of Cambro-Ordovician arenaceous, argillaceous and calcareous formations and Carboni-Triassic arenaceous and argillaceous formations is delineated as the eastern mass of a thrust fault along Choongju-Moongyong-Cheongsan in the middle of the zone. The present study proposes a geotectonic line, Imgye-Samchog fault(see, figure 1) which divides the northeastern part into two blocks, Hambacksan block in the west and East coast block in the east. The igneous rocks in the Hambacksan block ranging from granite to gabbro are distributed in a symmetrical zones parallel to general direction of Ogcheon zone as follows (Fig. 2 and Table 2). Southeast igneous rock zone: it aligns Jurassic granites in its south and Precambrian leucocratic granites in its north. Central igneous rock zone: it aligns Cretaceous granites in its south and Jurassic granites, and some of diorite and gabbro in its north. Northwest igneous rock zone: aligns Jurassic granites in its south and huge batholithic granodiorite in its north. The distribution of the igneous rocks in the East coast block shows an entirely different features from those of Hanbacksan block. In the southern part of the block they assemble in a narrow area ranging in age from Early Proterozoic, through Middle to Late Proterozoic, Devonian, Jurassic, Cretaceous to Tertiary, whereas, the igneous rocks in the northern part of the block gathered to a restricted area, in ages of Middle Proterozoic and Cretaceous. The assemblage of the igneous rocks in the studied area shows a compositionally restricted, mixed S-type and I-type granites, $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ > 0.706, rare volcanics and shortening with upright folding. These lithologic and structural features suggest that the igneous activity in this part related intimately to Hercynotype Orogeny of Pitcher(1979). Chronological episodes of igneous activity from Early Proterozoic to Early Tertiary in the northeastern part are figured.

Haenam pyrophyllite deposit occurred in the rhyolitic tuff of late Cretaceous age is located in the northern part of Haenam-gun, Jeonranam-do. The ore of the Haenam deposit is predominantly composed of pyrophyllite and illite accompanying such clay minerals as kaolinite, chlorite, and smectite. Pyrophyllite ore at the center of altered mass is often associated with kaolin minerals and high temperature minerals such as corundum, andalusite, and diaspore. On the basis of mineral assemblage the Haenam deposit can be devided into three alteration zones from the center to the margin of the deposit; the pyrophyllite zone, kaolinite zone, and illite zone. All alteration zones are associated with appreciable amounts of chalcedonic quartz. Those mineral assemblages indicate that hydrothermal solution which produced the Haenam deposit is strongly acidic solution with high silica and hydrogen activity and low $SO_4{^{2-}}$ activity. Discriminant analysis shows that $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, and $Al_2O$, of major elements are discriminant elements which classify alteration zones, while in case of trace elements Cr, Ni, and Sr turned out to be discriminant elements in this deposit. According to the mineral assemblage and illite geothermometry, pyrophyllite ore is considered to have been formed at about $240-290^{\circ}C$. K-Ar isotopic age for illite from this deposit indicates that it was formed at much the same age of later stage volcanics in the area, suggesting that the hydrothermal alteration of these deposits is associated with later volcanism of the area.
Mineral assemblages, mineral chemistries and stable isotope compositions of altered rocks of the Ogmae, Seongsan, Haenam and Gusi mines near the Haenam volcanic field in the southwestern part of the Korea peninsula were studied. Characteristic hydrothermal alteration zones in these deposits occurring in the Cretaceous volcanics and volcanogenic sediments, acidic tuff, and rhyolite, were outlined. Genetic environment with particular reference to the spatial and temporal relationships for these deposits were considered. The alteration zones defined by a mineral assemblage in the Ogmae and Seongsan deposits can be classified as alunite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite or dickite, quartz, illite or illite/smectite. Alunite was not developed in the Gusi and Haenam deposits. Boundaries between the adjacent zones are always gradational except for vein-type alunite. Alteration zones are superimposed upon each other in some localities. These deposits formed $71.8{\pm}2.8{\sim}76.6{\pm}2.9$ Ma ago, which is the almost same age of later volcanic rocks $79.4{\pm}1.7{\sim}82.8{\pm}1.2$ Ma, the Haenam Group, corresponding to Campanian. It indicates that hydrothermal alteration of these deposits appeared to be related to felsic volcanism in the area. Consideration of the stability between kaolinite, alunite, pyrite and pyrophyllite, and the geothermometry based on the mineral chemistry of illite and chlorite suggests that the maximum formation temperature for alunite and pyrophyllite can be estimated at about $250^{\circ}C$ and $240{\sim}290^{\circ}C$, respectively. It also suggests that these deposits were formed by acidic sulfate solution with high aqueous silica and potassium activity in a shallow depth environment. Compositional variation of alunite also suggests that the physico-chemical conditions fluctulated considerably during alteration processes, indicating shallow depth environment. The Haenam deposit was formed at a relatively greater depth than the others. The sulfur isotope composition of alunite and pyrite indicates that sulfur probably had a magmatic source, and the oxygen isotope composition for kaolinite indicates that the magmatic hydrothermal solution was diluted by circulating meteoric water.
Cretaceous volcanics and volcaniclastic sediments are abundantly distributed in the Haenam area located at the tip of the southwestern part of the Yongdong-Kwangju depression zone. The Cretaceous strata correlated with the Yuchon Group of the Kyongsang Supergroup are divided into three formations: Hwawon Formation, Uhangri Formation and Haenam Formation in ascending order. The stratovolcanic Hwawon Formation is mainly composed of andesite and andesitic pyroclastics. The Uhangri Formation is the lacustrine sedimentary deposit. The Haenam Formation is composed of Hwangsan tuff, Haenam tuff, Yongdang tuff, Seoho tuff, and also Acidic lava, both being formed by a cogenetic acidic volcanism. The topographic circular structure of the Cretaceous strata was controlled by the doming of Jurassic Sani granite. Cretaceous volcanism in the study area is characterized by the two stages of intermediate volcanic activity in Cenomanian to Albian, and acidic volcanic activity in Campanian to Coniacian.

The main aspect of this study are to clarify igneous activity of igneous rocks, which is a member of various intrusives and volcanics exposed in Naju-Namchang area of southern central zone of Ogcheon Geosynclinal Belt, southern part of Youngdong-Kwangju depression zone of tectonic provinces in Korea. Naju-Namchang area are subdivided into three rock belts based on occuring of Cretaceous granites. Three rock belts consist of foliated granites, Jurassic granites and Cretaceous granites in central granitic rock belt (C-C), and acidic tuff and lavas in northwest volcanic rock belt(C-NW) and southeast volcanic rock belt(C-SE). Chemical composition of these igneous rocks show mostly similar trend to the Daly's values on Harker diagram and correspond to VAG + Syn-COLG region on Pearce's discrimination diagram. These igneous rocks vary wide range in total REE amount(37.4-221.3ppm) characterized by enriched LREE content and steep negative slope in Eu(-) anomaly. It is concluded each synchronous granites which composed of serveral rock facies is considered to formed by differentiation of co-magma at continental margin, and igneous activity of study area are two more Pre-Cambrian Orogenies, Songrim Disturbance, Daebo Orogeny and Bulkuksa Disturbance.
Early Tertiary volcanics, volcanoclastics and granodiorite occur in the Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica. In the granodioritic stock and volcanic rocks, propylitic alteration characterized by actinolite, epidote, chlorite and calcite is widespread, and disseminations and veinlets of sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite and bornite are ubiquitious. The study on the hydrothermal alteration near granodioritic stock can be summarized as follows; (1) granodiorite intrusion is a small, high level stock associated with calc-alkaline volcanism, and have high copper content, (2) high temperature type of propylitic alteration and common occurrence of copper sulfides in and around granodiorite intrusion, (3) low ${\delta}^{34}S$ values of pyrites by oxidational conditions of sulfide deposition, (4) low ${\delta}^{34}S$ values of quartz and feldspar in the granodiorite, and isotopic non-equilibrium by hydrothermal alteration. It suggest that hyrothermal alteration and mineralization near granodioritc stock should be genetically related to granodiorite intrusion in the Barton Peninsula.
We determined $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ ages of the Tertiary dike swarms and volcanic rocks distributed in the SE Korea where the most prevalent crustal-deformation and volcanism occurred during the period. In previous study, it was disclosed that the mafic dike swarms on both sides (east and west) of the Yeonil Tectonic Line (YTL) were originated from a same magma although they are consistently aligned with different intrusion directions of NS and NE, respectively. Ages of the mafic dike swarms of this study are $47.3\pm0.8Ma$ and $48.0\pm1.3Ma$, respectively and confirm such conclusion. These facts clarify that the YTL acted as a westernmost limit of the crustal deformation, especially clockwise crust-rotation, during the Miocene. Frequent occurrence of basic dikes indicate strongly that the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula was under E-W extensional stress field at about 48 Ma, intimately related to the India-Asia collision and subsequent sudden change of the Pacific Plate motion. The ages of the uncommonly appearing intermediate and felsic dikes were determined as $55.9\pm1.5Ma$ and $53.0\pm1.0Ma$, respectively. Ages of the andesitic lava of the Hyodongri Volcanics, the dacitic lava of the Yongdongri Tuff, and dacitic rocks intruding and covering the Churyeong Breccia were determined as $24.0\pm0.5Ma,\;21.6\pm0.4Ma$, $21.8\pm0.1Ma,\;and\;22.0\pm0.5Ma$ respectively. The ages from the volcanics agrees well with the stratigraphy established by the latest field survey, which confirms that the $andesitic\~dacitic$ volcanism was followed by the basaltic volcanism during the Early Miocene.
