Volcano hazard mapping became a focus of scientific inquiry in the 1960s. Dwight Crandell and Don Mullineaux pioneered the geologic history approach with the concept of the past is the key to the future, to hazard mapping. The 1978 publication of the Mount St. Helens hazards assessment and forecast of an eruption in the near future, followed by the large eruption in 1980 demonstrated the utility of volcano hazards assessments and triggered huge growth in this area of volcano science. Numerical models of hazardous processes began to be developed and used for identifying hazardous areas in 1980s and have proliferated since the late 1990s. Model outputs are most useful and accurate when they are constrained by geological knowledge of the volcano. Volcanic Hazard maps can be broadly categorized into those that portray long-term unconditional volcanic hazards-maps showing all areas with some degree of hazard and those that are developed during an unrest or eruption crisis and take into account current monitoring, observation, and forecast information.

Korea government has consistently investigated the development of economic mineral deposits in the Tofua volcanic arc, Tonga since 2008 for the secure of sea floor mineral resources. We studied the composition and distribution of minerals formed by hydrothermal activity around TA 25 seamounts of the Tofua volcanic arc, Lau Basin, Tonga, using X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. We used 7 core samples and 9 surface sediment samples. Barite, sphalerite, and clinoclase are present in the most volcanic vent area. Gypsum, smectite, and kaolin mineral are distributed in vent A area, chalcopyrite, pyrite, smectite, and kaolin mineral are in vent B and C area, and gypsum, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and goethite are in vent D area. From the study of clay fraction, smectite and few kaolinite are detected in the most studied area except inner part of caldera, which suggest that argillic alteration are dominant in the volcanic vent areas. Various sulfide or arsenide minerals were found in the hydrothermal vent B, C, and D. The mineralogy and geochemistry suggest higher hydrothermal activities in volcanic vent B, C, and D compared to vent A and inner caldera area. Therefore higher probabilities of massive sulfide deposits may occur in hydrothermal vent B, C, and D.
The Miocene volcanic rocks in the Dangsari area, eastern part of Ulsan city, are mainly composed of andesite lava flows and pyroclastic rocks. The andesite lavas are identified as two-pyroxone andesite, comprising phenocrysts of augite ($Wo_{43.2}$$En_{41.0}$$Fs_{15.8}$ ) and hyperthene ($Wo_{2.7}$$65.8_{En}$$_{Fs}$ 31.5). The andesitic pyroclastic rocks are largely composed of pyroclastic breccias with alternating tuff-breccia and lapilli tuff, which showing planar layering, and minor amount of andesitic tuff with thin deposits of interlayered tuffaceous shale. According to the petrochemical data, andesitic rocks belong to medium-K calc-alkaline andesite. The position of bulk composition on the AFM diagram and the presence of normative quartz and hypersthene indicate that the volcanic rocks are calc-alkaline. The trace element composition and REE patterns of andesite, which are characterized by a high LILE/HFSE ratio and enrichment in LREE, suggest that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkalic volcanic rocks produced in the subduction environment. On the discrimination diagram, the Dangsari volcanic rocks fall into the fields of subduction related continental margin arc volcanic province. The primary magic melts may be derived from about 15% partial melting of mantle wedge in the upper mantle under destructive plate margin. And the melt evolved to calc-alkaline andesite magma by fractional crystallization and the magma was a little contaminated with crustal materials.
We investigated flux, grain size distribution, Nd-Sr isotope composition, mineral composition, and trace metal composition (REEs and Sc) of inorganic silicate fraction (ISF, mainly Asian dust with an unrestricted amount of volcanic materials) deposited during 600~1000 ka across the Mid-Pleistocene Transition at core NPGP 1401-2A (32°01'N, 178°59'E, 5205m) taken from the central part of the North Pacific. Our results reveal about a 2-fold increase in ISF flux after 800 ka, which is associated with an increase in La/Sc and a decrease in mean grain size. Asian dusts are finer than volcanic materials and La/Sc increases with the enhanced contribution of Asian dusts. Thus, increased flux after 800 ka can be explained by the increased contribution of Asian dusts relative to volcanic materials, likely due to an intensified Westerly Jet (WJ) and the drying of the Asian continent after the MPT. Mean grain size of ISF varies systematically in relation to glacial-interglacial cycles with a decrease during glacial stages, which is consistent with the previous results in the study area. Such a cyclical pattern is also attributed to the increase in the relative contribution of Asian dusts over volcanic components in glacial stages due to intensified WJ and drying of the Asian continent. Thus, it can be concluded that climate changes that had occurred across the MPT were similar to those of interglacial to glacial transitions at least in terms of the dust budget. Different from the Shatsky Rise, however, compositional changes associated with glacial-interglacial mean grain size fluctuations are not observed in Nd-Sr isotope ratios and trace element composition in our study of the Hess Rise. This may be attributed to the location of the study site far (> 4,000 km) from the volcanic sources. The volcanic component at the study site comprises less than 10% and varies within 3% over glacial-interglacial cycles. Such a small variation was not enough to imprint geochemical signals.
The purpose of this study was to explore the elementary school teachers' perceptions about making a model of volcanic activity. Thirty elementary teachers participated in the study after they in which they conducted the experiment of "Making a Model of Volcanic activity". A questionnaire was used to investigate how the teachers understood the strengths and weaknesses of the experiment in terms of the goals of school science inquiry. The results showed that 50-60% of the teachers were able to conduct the experiment as guided in the textbook regardless of their career or area of concentration. The teachers perceived that the experiment of current textbook was safe and useful for students to develop their creativity. However, they pointed out three major weaknesses of the textbook experiment: First, the textbook experiment does not clearly present the main purpose of the activity. Second, it does not appropriately reflect the natural volcanic activity. Third, it is a merely simple craft activity. In addition, the teachers agreed that the main goals of school science inquiry are the application of scientific knowledge, development of inquiry skills and cultivation of student's curiosity. However, the teachers perceived that the experiment of current textbook did not meet these three goals. They suggest that the experiment reflect the nature of real volcanic activities.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the Slope Angles and Summit Levels in the relation with the geological structures in the Taehwa River Basii where the NNE-SSW trending Yangsan fault and subsiduary fault are well developed. The mean slope angle in the Taehwa river basin is 12.18$^{\circ}$. The mean slope is higher in the volcanic and metamorphic terrain than in the area of granitic and sedimentary rocks. In view of a slope angle, the area can be divided into four categories, that is, low plains (0-5$^{\circ}$), hilly gentle slopes (5-15$^{\circ}$), moderate steep mountain slope (15-25$^{\circ}$), and steep mountain slope (over 25$^{\circ}$). The analysis of summit level exhibits that the mean of the highest points in the Taehwa River Basin composed mainly of the volcanic and metamorphic rocks is 327m.
The northeastern shore of the Anmyondo consists mainly of tuff, basalt, andesite and dacite. The K-Ar ages of the two mugearites are $89.4{\pm}2.4$ Ma and $91.9{\pm}2.3$ Ma which correspond to the middle Cretaceous age. Petrochemical reviews on the volanic rocks of the Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary ages in the Korean Peninsula show that marked differences exist in chemical compositions according to the age of eruption.

In this study, humic and fulvic acids in soils at the vicinity of domestic atomic power plants(NPPs), located in Yungkwang(YK), Uljin(UJ), Kori(KR), Koseong(KS), Wolseong(WS) area, and in volcanic ash soils of the Cheju island(Mt. Hanla(HL), Manjanggul(MJ)) were isolated, and characterized using chemical(elemental analysis, proton exchange capacity, molecular size distribution) and spectroscopic(UV/Vis., IR, FL, $^{13}$ C NMR spectra) methods. The results were compared with one another and compiled for their DB establishments. The humic substances distribution (humic acid, fulvic acid, Humin) in the soils were also determined by IHSS standard method. Main purpose of this study was to provide a basic data needed to evaluate the effect of humic substances on the migrational behaviour of radioactive elements in contaminated surface soil.

Continuously monitoring of Horizontal and Vertical movements in vulnerable areas due to earthquakes and volcanic activities is vital. These geohazard activities are the result of a slow deformation rate at the tectonic plate boundaries. The recent development of GPS (Global Positioning System) technology has made it possible to attain a millimeter level changes in the Earth's crust. This study used continuously observed GPS data at the flank of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcanic Mountain to determine crustal motion caused by impinging volcano from mantle convention. We analyzed 8 GPS observed from June 2016 to Dec 2019 using a well-documented Global Kalman Filter GAMIT/GLOBK software. The resulting velocity from GAMIT/GLOBK analysis was then used to compute the relative motion of our study area with respect to Nubia plate. Our analysis discovered a minor motion of less than 5mm/year in both horizontal and vertical components.
