Volatile oil components were analysed in Perilla frutescens accessions collected from different regions in South Korea and identified chemotypes based on the major volatile oil components. Major components out of 30 compounds identified were limonene, perillaldehyde, perillaketone, isoegomaketone, beta-caryophyllene, beta-farnesene, myristicin, and dillapiole. P. frotescens collections were classified into four chemotypes : PA type (57.7% limonene and 19.8% perillaldehyde), PK type (89.8% perillaketone), ST type (82.4% sesquiterpene, as 54.5% beta-caryophyllene and 27.9% beta-farnesene) and PP type (40.3% phenylpropenes as 13.6% myristicin and 26.7% dillapiole) and 37.8% sesquiterpenes. The majorities of P. frutescens collections in this study belong to PA type (41.9%) and PK type(38.8%).
Isolation of oils from leaves of Juniperus phoenicea and Juniperus oxycedrus was obtained by steam distillation extraction method. The compositions of essential oils (EOs) were studied by means of GC-MS and GC-FID, using the internal standard method and relative response factors. Around ninety eight compounds were determined in total, representing 98.25 g/100 g of EO of J. phoenicea and 98.48 g/100 g of EO of J. oxycedrus, respectively. The volatile leaf oils were dominated by the terpenic hydrocarbon fractions (79.87 g/100 g) and (61.27 g/100 g) characterized by high contents of α-pinene (64.6 g/100 g) and (54.0 g/100 g) in J. phoenicea and J. oxycedrus, respectively, as the main component. Also, the enantiomeric distribution of α-pinene, sabinene, camphene, δ-3-carene, β-pinene, limonene, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, bornyl acetate, and borneol in both oils is presented for the first time.

Thirty-two different volatile oils were identified from Allomyrina dichotoma (A. dichotoma) larvae by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The major volatile components were 2,2,4-trimethyl-3-carboxyisopropyl pentanoic acid isobutyl ester (5.83%), phenol,2,6-bis(a,a-dimethyl ethyl)-4-(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl) (5.72%), heptacosane (5.49%) and phenol,2,4-bis(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl) (5.47%). The composition of the fatty acids in A. dichotoma larvae was also determined by gas chromatography (GC) and fourteen constituents were identified. Oleic acid (19.13%) was the most abundant fatty acid followed by palmitic acid (12.52%), palmitoleic acid (3.71%) and linoleic acid (2.08%) in 100 g of A. dichotoma larvae on a dry weight basis. The quantity of unsaturated fatty acids (64.00%) were higher than that of saturated ones (36.00%). The predominant fatty acids in A. dichotoma consist of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA, 57.70%) such as oleic acid, myristoleic acid and palmitoleic acid, followed by saturated fatty acids (36.00%) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, 6.50%). In particular, the presence of essential fatty acids, such as linoleic (5.30%) and linolenic acid (0.40%) give A. dichotoma larvae considerable nutritional and functional value and it may be a useful source for food and/or industrial utilization.
Fresh japanese anise (Illicium anisatum L.) tree leaves were collected and ground after drying. The essential oils of the leaves were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using headspace (HS) and solid phase-microextra (SPME) methods. Volatile components of the leaves were identified 21 and 65 components in HS and SPME, respectively. The main components of the essential oils obtained by HS method were eucalyptol (36.7%), (+)-sabinene (15.61%), ${\delta}$-3-carene (6.87%), ${\alpha}$-pinene (6.07%), ${\gamma}$-terpinen (5.72%), ${\alpha}$-limonene (5.26%), ${\beta}$-myrcene (4.13%), ${\alpha}$-terpinene (4.04%) and ${\beta}$-pinene (3.73%). The other components were less than 3.5%. SPME method also showed that eucalyptol (17.88%) was main. The other were 5-allyl-1-methoxy-2 (13.29%), caryophyllene (6.09%), (+)-sabinene (5.60%), ${\alpha}$-ocimene (4.89%) and ${\beta}$-myrcene (3.73%), and the rest were less amounts than 3.5%. This work indicated that many more volatile components were isolated, comparing to the previous literature data and that SPME method was much more effective than HS method in the analysis of the volatile components.
An attempt was made in this study to analyze volatile flavor components of A. macrocephala Koidz. and A. lanacea DC. (Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi). Essential oils in A. macrocephala Koidz. and. A. lanacea DC. were isolated by a simultaneous steam distillation and extraction(SDE) method using n-pentane/diethy ether as solvent. A total of 30 and 28 components were identified by GC/MS from the essential oils of A. macrocephala Koidz. (18 hydrocarbons. 2 carbonyls, 5 alcohols, 5 esters) and A. lanacea DC.(14 hydrocarbons, 6 carbonyls, 4 alcohols, 3 esters, 1 acids), respectively. The major volatile flavor components in A. macrocephala Koidz. and A. lanacea DC. were furanodiene(27.9%, 15.7%), $\alpha$-cyperone(8.1%. 22.5% ), alloaromadendrene(2.9%, 4.7% ), (1,1-biphenyl)-4-carbon aldehyde 0%, 8.7% ) were found, respectively. Ten components including limonene, p-cymene, p-hymen-8-ol, (1,1-biphenyl)-4-carbox aldehyde were identified in A. lanacea DC, but not in A. macrocephala Koidz. and eight components including $\alpha$-copanene, isocaryophyllene, $\beta$-himahalene. germacrene B were and identified in A. macrocephala Koidz. but not in A. lanacea DC.
To find out allelopathic potential of naturally occurring substances emitted form pinus korairnsis, water extracts and volatile sudstances of the tree materials werw provided and used for tests such as seed germination and seedling growth test. In general, the more was the concentration of the extracts and essential oils, the worse was growth effects of the selected species. The germination an the growth were inversely proportional to the concentration of the extracts and the essential oils of p. koraiensis. in other words, the chemical substances had the biological toxic activity. gc and gc/ms methods were employed for analysis and identification of phytotoxic substances from the tree leaves. Sixteen chemical compounds were identified from water extracts and nineteen from essential oils of p. koraiensis leaves. Through the experiment on germination and seedling growth test, the chemical substances naturally occurring from p. koraiensis seemed to be responsible for the allelopathic potential in this study.

To investigate phytotoxic substances in some donor plants and their biological activities, seed germination and seedling growth of receptor plants were examined at different concentrations of aqueous extracts and essential oils of the donor plants. Germination of some receptor species was inhibited by the extracts, while seedling growth was decreased to a lesser degree than in the germination test. Germination, seedling growth and dry weight growth of Achyranthes japonica grown in pot were proportionally inhibited by the extracts. Volatile substances emitted some donor plants caused inhibitory effects in the germination and seedling growth of the receptor species. Essential oil of the plants extracted by Karlsruker's apparatus Inhibited growth of microorganisms, callus growth and root hair development of receptor plants. The cortical cells at the root tips of Latuca sativa treated with essential oils showed contraction of the cytoplasm, resulting in plasma membranes becoming detached from the cell walls and the cells metamorphosing irregularity. Accumulation of lipid granules Inside contracted cytoplasm and degeneration of mitochondrial cristae were also observed. The GC/MS method was employed for analysis and identification of allelochemicals from donor plants. Sixty-one chemical substances such as camphene, cineole etc. were identified from essential oils of Artemisia argyi.

Cancer is a major health obstacle around the world, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) as major causes of morbidity and mortality. Nowadays, there isgrowing interest in the therapeutic use of natural products for HCC and CRC, owing to the anticancer activity of their bioactive constituents. Boswellia serrata oleo gum resin has long been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine to alleviate a variety of health problems such as inflammatory and arthritic diseases. The current study aimed to identify and explore the in vitro anticancer effect of B. Serrata bioactive constituents on HepG2 and HCT 116 cell lines. Phytochemical analysis of volatile oils of B. Serrata oleo gum resin was carried out using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Oleo-gum-resin of B. Serrata was then successively extracted with petroleum ether (extract 1) and methanol (extract 2). Gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) analysis of the lipoidal matter was also performed. In addition, a methanol extract of B. Serrata oleo gum resin was phytochemically studied using column chromatography (CC) and thin layer chromatography (TLC) to obtain four fractions (I, II, III and IV). Sephadex columns were used to isolate ${\beta}$-boswellic acid and identification of the pure compound was done using UV, mass spectra, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ NMR analysis. Total extracts, fractions and volatile oils of B. Serrata oleo-gum resin were subsequently applied to HCC cells (HepG2 cell line) and CRC cells (HCT 116 cell line) to assess their cytotoxic effects. GLC analysis of the lipoidal matter resulted in identification of tricosane (75.32%) as a major compound with the presence of cholesterol, stigmasterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol. Twenty two fatty acids were identified of which saturated fatty acids represented 25.6% and unsaturated fatty acids 74.4% of the total saponifiable fraction. GC/MS analysis of three chromatographic fractions (I,II and III) of B. Serrata oleo gum resin revealed the presence of pent-2-ene-1,4-dione, 2-methyl- levulinic acid methyl ester, 3,5- dimethyl- 1-hexane, methyl-1-methylpentadecanoate, 1,1- dimethoxy cyclohexane, 1-methoxy-4-(1-propenyl)benzene and 17a-hydroxy-17a-cyano, preg-4-en-3-one. GC/MS analysis of volatile oils of B. Serrata oleo gum resin revealed the presence of sabinene (19.11%), terpinen-4-ol (14.64%) and terpinyl acetate (13.01%) as major constituents. The anti-cancer effect of two extracts (1 and 2) and four fractions (I, II, III and IV) as well as volatile oils of B. Serrata oleo gum resin on HepG2 and HCT 116 cell lines was investigated using SRB assay. Regarding HepG2 cell line, extracts 1 and 2 elicited the most pronounced cytotoxic activity with $IC_{50}$ values equal 1.58 and $5.82{\mu}g/mL$ at 48 h, respectively which were comparable to doxorubicin with an $IC_{50}$ equal $4.68{\mu}g/mL$ at 48 h. With respect to HCT 116 cells, extracts 1 and 2 exhibited the most obvious cytotoxic effect; with $IC_{50}$ values equal 0.12 and $6.59{\mu}g/mL$ at 48 h, respectively which were comparable to 5-fluorouracil with an $IC_{50}$ equal $3.43{\mu}g/mL$ at 48 h. In conclusion, total extracts, fractions and volatile oils of B. Serrata oleo gum resin proved their usefulness as cytotoxic mediators against HepG2 and HCT 116 cell lines with different potentiality (extracts > fractions > volatile oil). In the two studied cell lines the cytotoxic acivity of each of extract 1 and 2 was comparable to doxorubicin and 5-fluorouracil, respectively. Extensive in vivo research is warranted to explore the precise molecular mechanisms of these bioactive natural products in cytotoxicity against HCC and CRC cells.
This study was carried out to investigate the changes of essential oils in flue-cured leaf tobacco during aging for 21 months. The threshed leaf tobacco(BlO) produced in 2002 crop year was aged for 21 months in the warehouse of Oc-Cheon Leaf Tobacco Processing Factory. The leaf tobacco were sampled at three month intervals for analysis of volatile compounds. Volatile compounds were identified by GC/MS and comparison of gas chromatographic retention time with those of the authentic standard. The total of 75 compounds from the steam volatile concentrate of the flue-cured leaf tobacco were identified; they were 15 hydrocarbons, 12 alcohols, 3 aldehydes, 18 ketones, 7 esters, 10 acids, 3 phenols, 4 furans, 2 pyrrols and 1 pyridine. The major components of essential oil were neophytadiene, solanone, megastigmatrienone and phytol. After a aging period of 21 months, most of volatile compounds showed a gradual increasing tendency.
