Objective: This study reports on the effects of HongYi (red ant, or Formica rufa Linne) pharmacopuncture through three cases involving female patients with voiding difficulty.Method: We treated the three patients with HongYi pharmacopuncture and evaluated them using the international prostate symptom score (IPSS), which is used for measuring the severity of voiding difficulty.Result: After treatment, the IPSS showed improvement in each patient. The symptoms of voiding difficulty and other complaints also improved.Conclusion: Based on the three cases, HongYi pharmacopuncture may be a viable option for treating voiding difficulty among women.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to collect and analyze studies on acupuncture therapies for treatment of voiding difficulty in stroke patients and to suggest methods of study for acupuncture therapies. Methods: Electronic searches were performed on search sites including NDSL, 국회도서관, RISS4U, DBPIA, KISS, KMBASE, KoreaMed, 한국전통지식포탈, OASIS, Pubmed, CNKI, using the search words ‘중풍’, ‘뇌졸중’, ‘stroke’, ‘배뇨장애’, ‘voiding’, ‘urinary’, ‘incontinence’, ‘retention’, ‘ ’, ‘침치료’, and ‘acupuncture’ as single or combined keywords, from January 1990 to August 2013 with language limitation, Korean, English, Chinese. Also, quality of the studies were evaluated using Jadad score. Results: The searches identified 16 studies for selection and analysis. In the present study, voiding difficulty includes urinary incontinence and urinary retention. The acupuncture points CV4, SP6, and CV3 were the most frequently used. Treatments were most frequently applied daily. The times and terms of acupuncture treatment, were most frequently 30 minutes per treatment for 4 weeks Conclusions: The acupuncture therapies were effective in the treatment of voiding difficulty in stroke patients, but the study of acupuncture therapy as a treatment for this issue in stroke patients needs to be standardized and high-quality study models should be introduced.

We report a rare case of cauda equina syndrome due to bilateral lumbar facet cyst. A 62-year-old woman has developed both legs sciatica 3 months prior to her visit, but recently motor weakness and voiding difficulty occurred. Lumbar magnetic resonance image showed bilateral lumbar facet cyst compressing and surrounding both L5 nerve root and accompanying spinal stenosis. Urgent decompressive laminectomy and cyst removal was performed. Although sciatica was relieved and motor weakness was recovered usefully. Voiding difficulty and dysesthesia were not improved.

This report presents the case of 75-year-old men with spindle cell neoplasm. The patient underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for renal stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia. One month postoperatively, the patient was able to void without any difficulty. Five months later, the patient experienced difficulty voiding and presented to the emergency room with severe pelvic pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed regrowth of the prostate mass into the posterior bladder and penile root. The prostate-specific antigen level remained constant at 1.14 ng/mL during the pre-and postoperative periods. Five months before the TURP operation, the patient's CT scan showed a soft and mildly enlarged prostate with no protrusion into the bladder. Biopsy of the prostate, however, showed a protruding mass, indicative of a spindle cell neoplasm. The patient was subsequently treated with the chemotherapeutic drug adriamycin. Unfortunately, treatment was unsuccessful, and the patient died 18 months later.

Acute Transverse Myelitis is a syndrome, not a disease, in which acute inflammation affects gray and white matter in one or more adjacent thoracic segments. Almost all patients will develope ascending weakness and numbness of feet and leg, difficulty voiding, urinary retention, and loss of bowel control. We concluded this case to MAMOK( 마목) due to Qi ascent, Qi deficiency, Qi stoppage(상기, 기허, 기체). So we used herbal medication, acupuncture, and homeopuncture according to oriental medical theory. Weakness and numbness of feet and leg, difficulty voiding, urinary retention, and loss of bowel control are reduced. Herbal medication, acupuncture, and homeopuncture helped the care of this syndrome and further study will be investigated in oriental medicine for this syndrome.

We report our experience with a case of urethrolysis using a transvaginal suprameatal approach without lateral perforation of the urethropelvic ligament. A 43-year-old woman suffered from voiding difficulties such as hesitancy, frequency, urgency, decreased urinary flow, residual urine sensation after Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz operation concurrent with hysterectomy. The results of multidisciplinary work-ups of urethral obstruction such as history, vaginal examination, voiding cystourethrography, urodynamic study, showed that she had urethral obstruction due to a previous operation. Since clean intermittent catheterization and alpha-blocker therapy did not improve her symptoms, suprameatal transvaginal urethrolysis was performed to resolve the symptoms. Postoperative follow-up for 5 months showed that the patient remained free from voiding difficulty in their life. We believe that suprameatal transvaginal urethrolysis is worth attempting for urethral obstruction associated with anti-incontinence surgery.

In this study, the object is a development on uroflowmetry system to detect a voiding symptom conveniently in home or hospital. The hardware was composed of mechanism and system circuit part, the software was divided into firmware and PC program part. The following experiment was performed to evaluate an ability of classification and fitness. First, the following parameters was calculated in each flow curve pattern. The parameters are MFR, AFR, VOL, VT, FT, and TMF. A significant difference among parameters was examined through a statistical analysis for extracted parameters between normal and abnormal group. In the next work, the following experimentation was performed to classify the voiding symptom. Analysis of congregate rate was examined to find out classification possibility about each symptom of BPH, voiding difficulty, detrusor failure and hyperreflexia, unstable bladder. The uroflow data with the above symptom was divided into normal and abnormal group using fuzzy classifier. and that was performed appending the other group again. Fuzzy classification result using MFR and AFR was superior by 89.6 % more than grouping evaluation including VOL.

The following case studies illustrate the application of oriental medical treatment of patients diagnosed with neurogenical bladder. The outstanding symptoms of two cases were general weakening and voiding difficulty, urinary retention and lack of urine sense. In one case, neurogenical bladder was caused by an operation on the femur, and in the other case, by diabetes and anemia. Western medical treatment didnot have any effect in these cases, but after oriental medical treatment, self-voiding was possible. These resu1t suggest that oriental treatment should be considered for patients with neurogenical bladder.

A 64 year-old male patient with acute postrenal failure from obstructive uropathy was treated. His symptoms were difficulty voiding, general weakness, fever, chills and dyspepsia. We diagnosed his symptoms as acute postrenal failure from obstructive uropathy and administered Hwajung-tang(和中湯), Jasin-hwan(滋腎丸) and nelaton catheterization. After 30 days, these clinical symptoms had improved and results of BUN:creatinine also showed improvement, so I report this case, but more clinical case reports are needed.

Herpes zoster is an infection by the varicella zoster virus in a partly immune compromised person such as old age, cancer, immune deficiency disease. When either the upper lumbar or sacral segments are involved, serious urinary retention caused by central spread of herpes zoster from dorsal root ganglion can occur. The urinary disturbance appears to have been due to motor dysfunction of detrusor muscle, trigone muscle, and internal sphincter. We experienced two cases of zoster affecting different segments of the spinal cord and resulting in urinary retention.
