  • Curricula relevant to labor market needs are often designed with the goals of individual employment and regional development at the forefront. This study provided information on regional scope by investigating the extent and determinants of the geographic mobility of vocational high school graduates and the effects of that mobility on first-job wage rates. Geographic mobility was defined as being employed in other provinces in which vocational schools were located. About 38% of graduates were employed in other provinces. Geographic mobility was positively related to gender and human capital such as health, course of study, vocational certificate, and job training. Mobility led to higher wage rates even after controlling for sample selection bias. The implication is that vocational high school curricula which focus excessively on provincial concerns may weaken a workforce's effectiveness.

  • The ODA(Official Development Assistance) of Korea is growing considerably, and the ODA projects in the technical and vocational education have the good performance to the recipient countries, because they have the direct and quick benefits. But there are no economic model of performance measurement for the ODA in the technical and vocational education. The purpose of this study is to develop the economic model of measuring the performance of the ODA in the technical and vocational education. This study use the ROI model using financial information and the BSC model using non-financial information, and link each model closely. The ROI model using financial information is more relevant, because the benefits of the technical and vocational education are distinct and quick to the recipient groups.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the effectiveness of vocational training for the unemployed. The results show that the unemployed who received vocational training commended better performances than those unemployed without any vocational training in respect to the duration of job-seeking period and the success rate of obtaining a job, however no significant change can be found in their wage level after holding a job between the two groups. It can be seen from the cost-benefit analysis, although the trained unemployed show better performance than the untrained unemployed, those that were trained by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry(KCCI) do not show better performance than those that were trained through a private vocational train school since the training cost is much higher in the KCCI.

Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 221 clinical dental hygienist in Busan and Kyeongnam from April 1 to 30, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of structured questions including demographic characteristics(9 questions), vocational calling(9 questions), deontology(12 questions), asceticism(13 questions), and utilitarianism(8 questions). Questionnaire was carried out by Likert scale. Data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS Window 19.0 for frequency, mean and standard deviation analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and linear regression. Results: There was a significantly positive correlation between professional vocation and ethical inclination. The deontology was associated with education, dental service career, duty hours, and number of clients in multivariate analysis after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and professional vocation. Asceticism was also correlated with education, and utilitarianism was closely associated with vocational calling, work place, number of clients, and monthly income. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop the curricula including vocational calling and ethical inclination in the dental hygiene education. The dental hygienists should learn the ethical and vocational calling as a professional career.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the association of vocational interest and personality with oral mucosal diseases. Methods: Three hundred and fifty eight college students in Gyeonggi-do completed Vocational Preference Inventory L form and a questionnaire and collected data were analyzed by R program. Results: The prevalence of symptoms of oral mucosal diseases showed no significant difference among six vocational personality types. Compared to subjects with good or fair general health status, a significantly increased percentage of subjects with bad general health status showed herpetic stomatitis (p<0.01), oral malodor (p<0.01), and glossodynia (p<0.0001). Prevalence of taste disturbance increased significantly as the score of emotional instability (${\beta}=0.0438$, p=0.0082), anxiety (${\beta}=0.038$, p=0.0174), angry hostility (${\beta}=0.0398$, p=0.0061), depression (${\beta}=0.0443$, p=0.0035), and impulsiveness (${\beta}=0.0358$, p=0.0186) increased. Subjects who strongly felt oral malodor revealed significantly higher mean scales of scores of anxiety and angry hostility than subjects who did not feel oral malodor (p<0.05). Subjects who strongly felt oral malodor manifested significantly higher mean scales of scores of anxiety than subjects who slightly felt oral malodor (p<0.05). Conclusions: Taste disturbance was affected by emotional instability, anxiety, angry hostility, depression, and impulsiveness. Oral malodor was related to anxiety and angry hostility. Therefore, psychological aspects of taste disturbance and oral malodor could be evaluated by Vocational Preference Inventory L form.

  • Both the total quality management (TQM) and learning organization (LO) appear to be promising approaches for organizational transformation towards a more effective, efficient, and responsive organization in the past. The evolutionary development and theory supports for these two fields are distinct but they appear to have more in common than they have in distinctiveness. However, there is little synergy developed between these two fields both in academic research and industrial applications. It is possibly due to the fact that both the academia and industry are taking a limiting polarized view of TQM and LO and hence not getting the benefits of linking the two. This paper tries to establish a link between the organizational learning capability and the quality culture for TQM implementation based on a case study on the largest vocational education institution, the Vocational Training Council, of Hong Kong. The study reveals that there is a strong positive correlation between organizational learning capability and quality culture. The exploratory explanations for the links between the organizational learning capability constructs and the quality culture constructs are also discussed in this paper. The findings of the study support other literatures that TQM should be embedded in LO and serves as an enabler for organizational learning (OL) in transforming and creating organizations which continuously expand their abilities to change and shape their future.

Results: The regression model explained 33.0% of variance in nursing college students' happiness (F=41.44, p<.001). Significant factors were emotional intelligence (${\beta}=.30$, p<.001), grade (${\beta}=.20$, p<.001), major commitment (${\beta}=.18$, p=.002), and vocational calling (${\beta}=.11$, p=.035). Moreover, major commitment showed partial mediating effects on vocational calling and happiness. Major commitment also showed partial mediating effects on emotional intelligence and happiness. Conclusion: The results suggest that nursing college students' happiness can be increased through strategies aimed at increasing vocational calling, emotional intelligence, and major commitment.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify how the vocational education for training industrial workforce as a national human resource development (NHRD) system has undergone a transition process in relation to the national economic, industrial, and socio-cultural contexts. First, how vocational education as an industrial workforce training system has changed in accordance with Korea's economic environment, industrial development, and social changes; second, what are the main factors that influenced the role and importance of vocational education; and third, vocational education as a system for training industrial workforce and training workforce in science and engineering were analyzed differently from the perspective of the NHRD model. To this end, domestic and international academic journal papers, research reports, and thesis were investigated and classified by period, and major changes in vocational education were analyzed in relation to economic, industrial, and social issues and policies by period. As a result of the research, first, as the industry advanced, the level of vocational education increased and the scope expanded. Second, vocational education tended to shrink gradually after the manufacturing industry base, and especially secondary vocational education tended to decline after the national industry focused on light industry. Third, since the 1970s, the diversification of the NHRD and jobs has resulted in wage gaps depending on the level of education, which has increased the preference for university education and avoided secondary vocational education. In addition, a NHRD model focusing on training science and engineering workforce was proposed to compare the existing NHRD model focusing on overall vocational education, and it was revealed that the NHRD needs to be subdivided into various fields or levels to derive a model and examine changes. From the results of the study, vocational education in Korea, especially in secondary vocational education, has declined due to large impacts on socio-cultural perception due to economic growth, enthusiasm for education, and external shocks such as the financial crisis, and the long-term effort to change this perception is suggested to overcome the crisis of vocational education.
