In this study, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) visualization technique of occluded objects using integral imaging with a plenoptic camera. In previous studies, depth map estimation from elemental images was used to remove occlusion. However, the resolution of these depth maps is low. Thus, the occlusion removal accuracy is not efficient. Therefore, we use a plenoptic camera to obtain a high-resolution depth map. Hence, individual depth map for each elemental image can also be generated. Finally, we can regenerate a more accurate depth map for 3D objects with these separate depth maps, allowing us to remove the occlusion layers more efficiently. We perform optical experiments to prove our proposed technique. Moreover, we use MSE and PSNR as a performance metric to evaluate the quality of the reconstructed image. In conclusion, we enhance the visual quality of the reconstructed image after removing the occlusion layers using the plenoptic camera.

The experimental study on flow and heat transfer characteristics was conducted to investigate and to compare the performance of swirl jet by a twisted tape as a swirl generator with the performance of impinging single circular jet in fully developed flow tube. The effects of jet Reynolds number(Re=8700, 13800, 20000, 26500), dimensionless distance of nozzle-to-plate(H/d=2, 4, 6, 8) and swirl ratio(S=0.11, 0.23, 0.30) of the jet on the local and average Nusselt number have been examined. Measurements of local heat transfer rate and flow patterns on the jet impinging plate were used naphthalene sublimation technique and flow visualization technique respectively. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity of the jet along the centerline were measured. With a twisted tape in the nozzle exit, average Nusselt number at the around area of stagnation point were higher than those without the twisted tape at H/d=2, 4 and with the increase of Reynolds number. With a twisted tape in the nozzle, in the case of H/d=2, Re=26500 and S=0.11, maximum local Nusselt number at the region of y/d=0 and x/d=0.44 was obtained.

Recently, customers have been concerned about vehicle NVH depending on vehicle designing and manufacturing technologies development. In choosing vehicle, vehicle NVH is becoming the most important factor to customers. Especially, a seat is the final stage of vibration transfer path to passengers from all sources of vibration like engine, transmission and etc. And seat is the nearest component from driver's ear. For this reason, seat is the most important component that directly related to ride comfort for passengers. And driver can be influenced sensitively by BSR caused by seat. Thus, evaluating the vibration characteristics of vehicle seat and BSR caused by vehicle seat is necessary to reduce the seat BSR. The rattle noise occurred from seat has evaluated through sound source visualization and multi-dimensional spectral analysis - coherence function technique in this paper. Vibration characteristics of the seat has verified through modal test.
The microbubbles were used in various fields, such as turbulent control, drag reduction, material science and life science. The X-ray PTV using X-ray micro-imaging technique was employed to mea-sure the size and velocity of micro-bubbles moving in an opaque tube simultaneously. Micro-bubbles of $10{\sim}60{\mu}m$ diameter moving upward in an opaque tube (${\phi}$=2.7mm) were tested. Due to the different refractive indices of water and air, phase contrast X-ray images clearly show the exact size and shape of over-lapped microbubbles. In all of the working fluids tested (deionized water, tap water, 0.01 and 0.10M NaCl solutions), the measured terminal velocity of the microbubbles rising through the solution was proportional to the square of the bubble diameter. The rising velocity was increased with increasing mole concentration. The microbubble can be useful as contrast agent or tracer in life science and biology. The X-ray PTV technique should be able to extract useful information on the behavior of various bio/microscale fluid flows that are not amenable to analysis using conventional methods.
Whole flow fields of a room air conditioner (RAC) have been visualized by a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique to analyze the flow structure with various inlet and outlet angles, and to control an eccentric vortex which affects an efficiency and noise of the RAC. A test model with 5 stages of a cross flow fan has been manufactured and a transparent acryl has been installed at the side of the test model for the PIV experiment. The inlet and outlet flows and the flow inside the cross flow fan have been analyzed by varying the inlet grill angles and outlet blade angles. The movement of the eccentric vortex has been investigated experimentally by developing the measurement technique for the inner flow field of the cross flow fan. From the visualization of the inner flows, the origins of the noise inside the RAC and the condensation points around the outlet parts of the cold air have been observed and the solution of the problems can be proposed in this study.
There have been increased interests in information visualization. Information visualization has been considered as a way to summarize textual data so that the users can access large amount of data more efficiently and effectively. However, many information visualization techniques stem from scientific visualization techniques, which might be difficult for the regular users to understand. More importantly, the system models used by most of the information visualization techniques do not have real world counterpart. For example, most of the users do not represent or process the textual data in terms of fisheye view or a topological map. This means that there is no affordance on the current information visualization systems from the users point of view. In this paper, we analyzed this problem by using the user interface design principles to point out what lacks in the current information visualization systems. More specifically, we have applied Nielson's Heuristic Evaluation technique to review four representative information visualization techniques. The analysis results confirmed our original hypothesis on why the current information visualization systems are not part of the mainstream information systems. Finally, we suggested to invest more efforts in improving the currently prevalent and familiar bullet list type textual information presentation method based on the usability studies and the intelligent content analysis.
The methodology to visualize the shape of blood vessel and its blood flow have been attracting as a very interesting problem to forecast and examinate a disease in thrombus precursor protein. May previous visualization researches have been appeared for designing the blood vessel and also modeling the blood flow using a doppler imaging technique which is one of nondestructive testing techniques. General visualization methods are to depict the blood flow obtained from doppler effects with fragmentary stream lines and also visualize the blood flow model using volume rendering. However, these visualizeation techniques have the disadvantage which a set of small line segments does not give the overall observation of blood flows. Therefore, we propose a visualization system which reconstruct the continuity of the blood flow obtained from doppler effects and also visualize the blood flow with the vector field of blood particles. This system will use doppler phase difference from medical equipments such as OCT with low penetration and reconstruct the blood flow by the curvature estimation from vector field of each blood particle.
Magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) is a versatile flow visualization technique using magnetic resonance imaging machine developed for the medical purpose. Recently, MRV is often utilized to analyze engineering flows due to its superior features of MRV such as capabilities of measuring flows with complicated, opaque flow geometry unlike optical techniques, 3-dimensional volumetric velocity vectors within a few hours, and etc. The purpose of this study was to validate the MRV data and evaluate the accuracy of the mean velocity profiles that we acquired for a turbulent flow in a circular pipe using a MR machine installed in Korea Basic Science Institute, Ochang, Korea. In addition, we briefly describe a procedure of parameter optimization for the operation of MRV. The results indicate that the MRV measurements provided well resolved mean velocity fields with a quite reasonable accuracy according to the inner and outer layer scaling laws of the turbulent pipe flows.
Control of mixing and transport processes are the key areas that can be benefited by understanding the hydrodynamics in gas-liquid two-phase flows. In particular, the enhanced bubble-induced liquid-phase mixing is known to be a function of void fraction distribution, gas phase velocity and so on. To further our insight on the characteristics of the liquid-phase mixing induced by the bubbles, in the present study, we experimentally investigate the mixing performance of a rectangular bubble column while changing the void fraction from 0.006 to 0.075%. A shadowgraphy technique is used to measure the gas-phase properties such as void fraction and size/velocity of bubbles. On the other hand, we use dye visualization with low diffusive buoyant dye to directly measure the level of mixing. Finally, we confirm that the time taken for full mixing scales with the inverse of volume void fraction.
An experimental study is conducted to investigate the interaction of vortices over a delta wing with leading edge extension(LEX) through the off-surface flow visualization and the 5-hole probe measurements of the wing wake region. Especially, the application of a new visualization technique is employed by ultrasonic humidifier water droplet and laser beam sheet. The results, both the off-surface visualization and the 5-hole probe, show that LEX tends to stabilize the vortices of the delta wing up to the high angle of attack even though the model is yawed. With increasing yaw, the windward leading edge vortex moves inward, and closer to the wing surface, while the leeward vortex moves outwards and away from the wing surface. The vortex interaction is promoted in the windward side, and is delayed in the leeward side.
