  • various applications is presented. It is based on rapid-prototyping of transparent model for flow visualization and on the use of refractive index matching that enables efficient and clear visualization of the flow inside the model. The model is immersed in the index-matching fluid in a glass tank so that any displacement and rotation of the model in the tank have no influence on the optical setup for image acquisition to be made through a glass wall. This can facilitate greatly the camera calibration for stereo PIV and 3-D PTV. As the flow model is generated directly from 3-D surface data, no laborious preparation of the flow model is needed. This approach for seamless linking of model generation and PIV measurement is applicable to various flow measurements in automobile, ship building, fluid machinery, turbine, electrical appliances, heat exchanger, electronic cooling, bio-engineering and so on.

  • Flow visualization technique incorporating photochromic dye is used to study the flow characteristics of the gravity driven laminar wavy film. The film thickness and wave speed are successfully measured by flow visualization. As the inclination angle increases, the waves have higher peaks and lower substrate thickness. The measured cross stream velocity at the free surface is up to 10% of stream wise velocity, which shows enhanced mixing in the lump of the film. The measured stream wise velocity profiles are close to parabolic profile near the substrate and the peak but show significant velocity defect near the rear side of the wave. The measured wall shear rate distributions show good agreement with the previous workers' numerical results.

  • An experimental flow visualization study of the entrance section of channels formed with wavy plates was made. The experiments were conducted in a water channel and a laser illuminated particle tracking was used as the technique of flow visualization. The flow region that were found in the experiments are steady, unsteady and significantly-mixed flows. Instabilities of the flow first appear near the exit of the channel. As the Reynolds number increases, the flows are characterized by the appearance of flow separation and the growth of recirculation region.

  • The Linked Open Data(LOD) cloud is quickly becoming one of the largest collections of interlinked datasets and the de facto standard for publishing, sharing and connecting pieces of data on the Web. Data publishers from diverse domains publish their data using Resource Description Framework(RDF) data model and provide SPARQL endpoints to enable querying their data, which enables creating a global, distributed and interconnected dataspace on the LOD cloud. Although it is possible to extract structured data as query results by using SPARQL, users have very poor in analysis and visualization of RDF data from SPARQL query results. Therefore, to tackle this issue, based on Formal Concept Analysis, we propose a novel approach for analyzing and visualizing useful information from the LOD cloud. The RDF data analysis and visualization technique proposed in this paper can be utilized in the field of semantic web data mining by extracting and analyzing the information and knowledge inherent in LOD and supporting classification and visualization.

  • Predictions of the fuel spray dispersion and mixing processes are very important to improve the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in GDI engines. Numerical and experimental analysis of the sprays with a swirl injector have been conducted. A numerical analysis is carried out using KIVA-II code with modified spray models. Experimental measurements are performed to show the global spray images and the local images near nozzle tip using laser sheet visualization technique. Computed and measured spray characteristics such as spray width, tip penetration are compared, and good agreements can be achieved. The spray head vortex is stronger as the injection pressure increases, but numerical calculations cannot show the head vortex properly.

  • The flow around a rotating circular cylinder near a plane wall is investigated by the measurement of the lift acting on the cylinder and by the flow visualization using the hydrogen bubble technique in the circulating water tank. The experimental parameters are the rotating direction of the cylinder, the space ratios H/D$(H/D=0.05\sim0.5)$ between cylinder and plane wall and the velocity ratios $\alpha(\alpha=0\sim{\pm}2.0)$. In the case of clockwise, the lift on the rotating circular cylinder was increased with the reduction of the space ratios and with the velocity ratios, the upper separation point was more shifted in the rotating direction with them. In the case of anticlockwise, the absolute value of the lift on the rotating circular cylinder was increased with the space ratios and with the velocity ratios, the lower separation point was more shifted in the rotating direction with them.

  • Air flow inside an automotive HVAC module has been investigated using a high-resolution PIV technique with varying the temperature operation mode. The PIV system consists of a 2-head Nd:YAG laser (125 mJ), a high-resolution CCD camera (2K$\times$2K), optics and a synchronizer. A real automotive HVAC module was used directly under real operating condition. Some casing parts of the HVAC module were replaced with transparent windows for capturing clear flow images with laser light sheet beam illumination. Time-averaged velocity fields were obtained for two different temperature control modes. Flow characteristics of the air-conditioned air flow inside the automotive HVAC system for the two temperature baffle conditions were evaluated.

  • Nucleation of a crack is readily defected by acoustic emission (AE) method. One powerful technique for AE waveform analysis has been developed as SiGMh (Simplified Greens functions for Moment tensor Analysis), as crack kinematics of locations, types and orientations are quantitatively determined. Because these kinematical outcomes are obtained as three-dimensional (3-D) locations and vectors, 3-D visualization is definitely desirable. To this end, the visualization system has been developed by using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). As an application, failure protest of a reinforced concrete beam is discussed.

  • Visitors to a Web site leave access logs documenting their activity in the site. These access logs provide a valuable source of information about the visitors' access patterns in the Web site. In addition to the pages that the user visited, it is generally possible to discover the geographical locations of the visitors. Web servers also records other information such as the entry into the site, the URL, the used operating system and the browser, etc. There are several Web mining techniques to extract useful information from such information and visualization of a Web log is one of those techniques. This paper presents a technique as well as a case a study of visualizing a Web log.
