  • We report design and simulation of a two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based nanophotonic crystal as an optical insulator to enhance the light emission efficiency of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The device was designed in a manner that a triangular array silicon photonic crystal light insulator has a square trench in the middle where LED can be placed. By varying the normalized radius in the range of 0.3-0.5 using plane wave expansion method (PWEM), we found that the normalized radius of 0.45 creates a large band gap for transverse electric (TE) polarization. Subsequently a series of light propagation simulation were carried out using 2D and three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). The designed silicon-based light insulator device shows optical characteristics of a region in which light propagation was forbidden in the horizontal plane for TE light with most of the visible light spectrum in the wavelength range of 450 nm to 600 nm.

  • Studies on visible-light-driven photocatalysis of air pollutants at indoor air quality (IAQ) levels have been limited. Current study investigated visible-light derived photocatalysis with N-doped and S-doped titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) for the control of benzene at indoor levels. Two preparation processes were employed for each of the two types of photocatalyst: urea-Degussa P-25 $TiO_2$ and titania-colloid methods for the N-doped $TiO_2$; and titanium isopropoxid- and tetraisopropoxide-thiourea methods for the S-doped $TiO_2$. Furthermore, two coating methods (EDTA- and acetylacetone-dissolving methods) were tested for both the N-doped and S-doped $TiO_2$. The two coating methods exhibited different photocatalytic degradation efficiency for the N-doped photocatalysts, whereas they did not exhibit any difference for the S-doped photocatalysts. In addition, the two doping processes showed different photocatalytic degradation efficiency for both the S-doped and N-doped photocatalysts. For both the N-doped and S-doped $TiO_2$, the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) efficiency increased as the hydraulic diameter (HD) decreased. The degradation efficiency determined via a PCO system with visible-light induced $TiO_2$ was lower than that with UV-light induced unmodified $TiO_2$, which was obtained from previous studies. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that for the photocatalytic annular reactor with the HD of 0.5 cm, PCO efficiency increased up to 52% for the N-doped $TiO_2$ and 60% for the S-doped $TiO_2$. Consequently, when combined with the advantage of visible light use over UV light use, it is suggested that with appropriate HD conditions, the visible-light-assisted photocatalytic systems can also become an important tool for improving IAQ.

  • Visible light communication, which transmits information using visible light, has advantages such as ultra-high speed, ultra-delay, and ultra-connectivity, so research is being conducted as a way to complement 6G communication. In this paper, a study was conducted to overcome the performance degradation caused by the RGB mixing ratio in visible light communication. In a visible light communication system using LED lighting, the role of lighting is an important function, and when used for communication, the performance difference according to the RGB mixing ratio inevitably occurs. In particular, if the intensity of light is below a certain standard, the problem of deteriorating the performance of the entire system occurs. In this study, when a certain performance or less occurs in the communication system caused by the difference in the mixing ratio among the three RGB channels, the remaining two signals except the LED with the best performance are transmitted to STBC (Space-Time Block Coding) to ensure the quality of communication. A computer simulation was performed to verify the performance of the proposed system, and it can be seen that the performance of the proposed system is improved compared to the existing system.

  • Wireless Visible Light Communication is the technology that enables communication using LED illumination Infrastructure instead of existing illumination such as incandescent lamp or fluorescent light. Because VLC uses light for communication, it has no problem of frequency permission and is harmless to human body. It is also possible to check the communication through eye. So VLC can be used as a supplement to the Radio Frequency communication, Infrared in indoor environment. So far, researchers on the LED Visible light communication have focused on the increasing transmission speed, transmission distance, modulation method. However, there is few research of main factors that influence on system performance. System performance has been mainly predicted through simulation. In this paper, I recognized that these factors such as outside light noise, obstacle, LED panel position or emitted angle have a great impact on wireless communication system. So I experimented VLC system by changing distance and position to discover location suitable for BER regulation.

  • In this paper, we analyze indoor visible light communication environment based on LightTools. If the environments for VLC are too various, it is not easy to analyze the VLC environment using mathematical techniques. To overcome this problem, we use LightTools program for the analysis of various VLC environment.

  • We introduce a new method of time-division visible light communication (VLC) using LED lamp light for the generation of synchronizing pulses. The LED lamp, driven by an AC 220-V power line, radiates light that has a 120-Hz frequency component. The pulse generator in each VLC system receives the LED lamp light and generates the synchronizing pulses that are required for time-division transmission of multiple VLC channels. The pulse period is subdivided into several time slots for VLC channels. In experiments, 120-Hz synchronizing pulses were generated using LED lamp light, and three VLC channels were transmitted independently without interfering with each other in a condition where the VLC signals overlapped in space. This configuration is useful in constructing multiple wireless sensor networks that are safe and without interference in locations where LED lamps are used for illumination.

  • Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are modulated using a square wave pulse sequence for flicker prevention and dimming control in visible light communication (VLC). In a VLC transmitter, the high and low bits of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data are converted to two square waves of different frequencies, which continue for a finite time defined by the fill ratio in an NRZ bit time. As the average optical power was kept constant and independent of data transmission, the LED was flicker-free. Dimming control is carried out by changing the fill ratio of the square wave in the NRZ bit time. In the experiments, the illumination of the LED light was controlled in the range of approximately 19.2% to 96.2% of the continuous square wave modulated LED light. In the VLC receiver, a high-pass filter combined with a latch circuit was used to recover the transmitted signal while preventing noise interference from adjacent lighting lamps.

  • In order to effective degradation of organic dye both under visible light or ultrasonic irradiation, the MWCNTs (multiwalled carbon nanotube) deposited with Fe and $TiO_2$ were prepared by a modified sol-gel method. The Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst was characterized by surface area of BET, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The low intensity visible light and low power ultrasound was as an irradiation source and the methylene blue (MB) was choose as the model organic dye. Then degradation experiments were carried out in present of undoped $TiO_2$, Fe/$TiO_2$ and Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalysts. Through the degradation of MB solution, the results showed the feasible and potential use of Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst under visible light and ultrasonic irradiation due to the enhanced formation of reactive radicals as well as the possible visible light and the increase of ultrasound-induced active surface area of the catalyst. After addition of $H_2O_2$, the MB degradation rates have been accelerated, especially with Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst, in case of that the photo-Fenton reaction occurred. The sonophotocatalysis was always faster than the respective individual processes due to the more formation of reactive radicals as well as the increase of the active surface area of Fe/$TiO_2$-MWCNT catalyst.

  • New porous $TiO_2$ nanostructures with shapes of pearl and rice were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of $TiO_2$-liposome nanocomposites in acid and base solutions, respectively, as identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and selected area electron diffraction proved them to be well-defined anatase crystals. Their UV-visible reflectance absorption spectra were observed to have low band gap energy (3.03 and 3.07 eV, respectively), exhibiting surface absorption band in the visible range from 400 to 600 nm. The degradation of methylene blue (MB) over the $TiO_2$ nanostructures was observed upon visible-light irradiation, which was found to be very efficient as compared with any other conventional visible-light responsive $TiO_2$ nanostructures.

  • A heterogeneous $Bi_2S_3/TiO_2$ composite catalyst was synthesized via a green ultrasonic-assisted method and characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM analysis. The results clearly show that the $TiO_2$ particles were homogenously coated with $Bi_2S_3$ particles, indicating that $Bi_2S_3$ particle agglomeration was effectively inhibited after the introduction of anatase $TiO_2$. The Texbrite BA-L (TBA) degradation rate constant for $Bi_2S_3/TiO_2$ composites reached $8.27{\times}10^{-3}min^{-1}$ under visible light, much higher than the corresponding value of $1.04{\times}10^{-3}min^{-1}$ for $TiO_2$. The quantities of generated hydroxyl radicals can be analyzed by DPCI degradation, which shows that under visible light irradiation, more electron-hole pairs can be generated. Finally, the possible mechanism for the generation of reactive oxygen species under visible-light irradiation was proposed as well. Our result shows the significant potential of $Bi_2S_3$-semiconductor-based $TiO_2$ hybrid materials as catalysts under visible light for the degradation of industry dye effluent substances.
