  • We propose a reflector-type perfect absorber with double absorption lines using electric and magnetic dipoles of Mie resonances in an array of silicon nanospheres on a silver substrate. In the visible range, hundreds of nanometer-sized nanospheres show strong absorption lines up to 99%, which are enhanced by the interference between Mie scattering and reflections from the silver substrate. The air gap distance between the silicon particles and silver substrate controls this interference, and the absorption wavelengths can be controlled by adjusting the diameter of the silicon particles over the entire range of visible wavelengths. Additionally, our structure has a filling factor of 0.322 when the absorbance is nearly 100%.

  • This study investigates the improvement in the theoretical success rate of the integer ambiguity resolution in GPS/GNSS carrier-phase positioning by using many visible satellites. It estimates the dependence of the rate on the baseline length in relative positioning under the condition of the use of double/triple-frequency navigation signals. The calculation results show that the use of 14 navigation satellites (i.e., seven GPS and seven Galileo ones) remarkably improves the success rate under the condition of very short baseline length, compared with the use of seven GPS ones. The numerical reliability of the calculated success rates is strictly tested by examining the tightness of the union and minimum-distance bounds to the rate. These bounds are also shown to be effective to investigate the realization of the high success rates.

  • In this paper, a high precision straightness measurement system has been developed at low cost using a visible laser and CMOS image sensor. CMOS image sensor detected optical image and the variation of straightness was calculated by image processing. We have observed that the error of the developed straightness measurement system was 0.9% when a distance of 3m between laser and image sensor. And it can be applied to 3D printer and any other areas.

  • Driving maneuvers in car-following are affected not only by the factors related to road and traffic conditions, but also by factors related to drivers' cognition to them. This paper attempts to analyse drivers' car-following distance tests on road characteristics. Driving maneuvers are directly observed by video recorder sets in the vehicle. At the same time drivers are interviewed about their cognitive degree of car-following distance according to a given level of cognitive language. As a result, linguistical cognition of car-following distance is well fitted in with Weber-Fechner's law. This paper suggests a modeling method that takes into account the driver's cognition for acquiring traffic visible information on driving maneuver.

  • Seafarers are often placed in circumstances that require emergency evacuations due to various causes, including ship collisions, sinking, stranding, and fires. Achieving shorter evacuation time is an important factor in increasing the survival rate during these circumstances, but the narrow and complicated structure of ships is an obstacle when it comes to executing a quick evacuation. Also, unpredictable restrictions may be imposed by bad sea or weather. In this study, various experiments were conducted with sailors currently on board ships in order to examine factors that increase evacuation time. The data was then and analyzed. Evacuation time was measured by dividing crews into groups: sailors that were given an explanation of the ship's structure and those that were not. Furthermore, the visibility range was divided into 0 m, 3 m, and 5 m. The results indicated that, having an explanation of the ship structure did not have much of an effect on evacuation time but visibility conditions led to an increase in evacuation time with a maximum of 2.5 to 2.6 times longer when the visible distance was 5 m, 0 m and 3 m. Therefore, ensuring a visible distance of over 5 m was determined to be the most important factor for reducing evacuation time. In the future, effort should be made to ensure a greater visible distance to improve the survival rate of seafarers and passengers on board ships that encounter incidents.

  • In case of a fire inside a tunnel, unlike ordinary roads, it is very difficult for a driver to obtain visibility, and a large accident is highly likely to occur. In this study, the smoke behavior, visible distance, and CO concentration of a jet fan were analyzed using the NIST fire simulation (FDS). All analyses were set to HRRPUA (Heat Release Rate Per Area) 3.6MW/m and all the analysis times were set to 600s. In all analyses by CFD, the results were confirmed at y=30m and y=110m, and smoke behavior analysis, visible range analysis, and carbon monoxide concentration were confirmed according to the diameter and flow rate. As the size and flow rate of the jet fan increased, the visibility distance was high at y=30m, and the concentration of carbon monoxide was also confirmed to be 0 ppm. Therefore, proper setting of the jet fan diameter and flow rate will be an excellent solution for fires in tunnels, and taking refuge at upstream area of a re-ventilated fan can reduce the number of casualties.

  • In this paper, we propose indoor IoT monitoring system based on visible light communication using smart phone with attracting attentions in recent wireless communication. The main features and contributions of the proposed system developed in this paper are as follows. First, the actual data generated within indoor can be processed via the server by using only the visible light communication. Second, the collected data by using the visible light communication can be monitered by smart phone. Performance evaluation of the proposed system is performed under illumination of the normal fluorescent lamps. We first check successful transmission between transmitting module and receiving module of the data collection system. The monitoring system is tested according to the change of the degree of condensing and distance of the LED and the decoding success rate of the proposed smart phone application. We expect that the proposed system can be applied for indoor and outdoor IoT areas together.

  • A miniaturized laser beam transmitter, in which a visible laser module at ${\lambda}$=650 nm is precisely stacked upon an infrared (IR) module at ${\lambda}$=905 nm, has been proposed and constructed to provide an IR collimated beam in conjunction with a collinear monitoring visible beam. In particular, the IR beam is selectively dispersed through a perforated sheet diffuser, so as to create a rapidly diverging close-range beam in addition to a highly defined long-range beam simultaneously. The complementary close-range beam plays a role in mitigating the blind region in the vicinity of the transmitter, which is inevitably missed by the main long-range beam, thereby uniformly extending the transmitter's effective trajectory that is sensed by a receiver. The proposed transmitter was designed through numerical simulations and then fabricated by incorporating a diffuser sheet, perforated with an aperture of 2 mm. For the manufactured transmitter, the IR long-range beam was observed to have divergences of ~2.3 and 1.6 mrad in the fast and slow axes, respectively, while the short-range beam yielded a divergence of ~24 mrad. The angular alignment between the long-range IR and visible beams was as accurate as ~0.5 mrad. According to an outdoor feasibility test involving a receiver, the combination of the IR long- and short-range beams was proven to achieve a nearly uniform trajectory over a distance ranging up to ~600 m, with an average detectable cross-section of ${\sim}60{\times}80cm^2$.
