The flowfield around transonic wing-body configuration was simulated using in-house CFD code and compared with the experimental data to understand the influence of several features of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) ; grid dependency, turbulence models, spatial discretization, and viscosity. The wing-body configuration consists of a simple planform RAE Wing 'A' with an RAE 101 airfoil section and an axisymmetric body. The in-house CFD code is a compressible Euler/Navier-Stokes solver based on unstructured grid. For the turbulence model, the $k-{\omega}$ model, the Spalart-Allmaras model, and the $k-{\omega}$ SST model were applied. For the spatial discretization method, the central differencing scheme with Jameson's artificial viscosity and Roe's upwind differencing scheme were applied. The results calculated were generally in good agreement with experimental data. However, it was shown that the pressure distribution and shock-wave position were slightly affected by the turbulence models and the spatial discretization methods. It was known that the turbulent viscous effect should be considered in order to predict the accurate shock wave position.
The objective of this study is to get simulation data about pulsatile flow of a non-Newtonian fluid through a bifurcated tube. All the process was based on CFD method, with a commercial FVM code, SC/Tetra ver. 6.0 for solving, and with CATIA R16 for generating geometries. To define a non-Newtonian fluid, the following viscous models are used; the Powell-Eyring model, the modified Powell-Eyring model, the Cross model, the modified Cross model, the Carreau model, the Carreau-Yasuda model and the modified Power Law model. The flow calculation data using each model were compared with the other data of a existing paper. Finally, the Carreau model was recognized to give the best result with the SC/Tetra code, and the succeeding simulations are made with the model. For the pulsating flow condition, the sine wave type velocity profile is given as the inlet boundary condition. To investigate the effect of geometries and mesh, the pre-test is carried out with various curvature conditions of the bifurcated corner, and then with various mesh conditions. The final process is to calculate flow variables such as the wall shear stress (WSS) and the wall shear stress gradient (WSSG). To validate all the result, the simulation is compared with the existing data of the other papers. Generally speaking, there is a noticeable difference in the maximum and minimum value of WSS. It is not sure that the values in each data are on the exactly same location. However, the overall trend is similar. The next study needs to investigate the same situation by experimental method. Furthermore, if the flow is simulated with more pulsatile conditions, more data of flow field through a bifurcated tube could be achieved.
It is widely accepted that the pressure variation of interstitial fluid is one of the most important factors in bone physiology. In order to understand the role of interstitial fluid on porous bony structure, a consideration for the biomechanical interactions between fluid and solid constituents within bone is required. In this study, a poroelastic theory was applied to investigate the elastic behavior of calf vertebral trabecular bone composed of the porous solid trabeculae and the viscous bone marrow. The poroelastic behavior of trabecular bone in a uniaxial stress condition was simulated using a commercial finite difference analysis software (FLAC, Itasca Consulting Group, USA), and tested for 5 different strain rates, i.e., 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 10 per second. The material properties of the calf vertebral trabecular bone were utilized from the previous experimental study. Two asymptotic poroelastic responses, the drained and undrained deformations, were predicted. From the predicted results for the simulated five strain rates, it was found that the pore pressure generation has a linearly increasing behavior when the strain rate is the highest at 10 per second, otherwise it showed a nonlinear behavior. The pore pressure generation with respect to the strain was found to be increased as the strain rate increased. The elastic moduli predicted at each strain were 208.3, 212.2, 337.6, 593.1, and 602.2 MPa, respectively. Based on the results of the present study, it was suggested that the calf vertebral trabecular bone could be modeled as a poroelastic material and its strain rate dependent material behavior could be predicted.

An experimental investigation has been made to study the interaction between and incident oblique shock wave and an unstabilized turbulent boundary layer on a solid surface downstream of a porous surface with air injection through the porous surface. The boundary layer upstream of the interaction is unstabilized by the injection and provokes a shock wave which eventually interacts with the unstabilized boundary layer after reflecting from the upper wall of the test section. Three cases having diferent upstream Mach numbers and different shock strengthes are studied. According to the level of the unstabilization, two cases are of attached boundary layers and the other one is of a separated boundary layer. The result shows that the reflected wavey system is composed of the compression wave, expansion wave fan, and recompression wave like the ordinary interaction while the separated boundary layer strengthens the reflected expansion waves. The interactions of the attached boundary layers show a similar tendency of the upstream wall pressure distribution as that of the ordinary interacton but the pressure rise rather decays in the downstream region. In case of the separated boundary layer, the wall pressure continues to rise in the downstream as opposed ot the former cases. This indicates that the interaction region spreads out widely adn the viscous effect of the separated boundary layer smoothens the abrupt pressure increase due to the shock inpingement.

When a ship sails in a seaway, the resistance on a ship increases due to incident waves and winds. The magnitude of added resistance amounts to about 15–30% of a calm-water resistance. An accurate prediction of added resistance in waves, therefore, is essential to evaluate the performance of a ship in a real sea state and to design an optimum hull form from the viewpoint of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations such as Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI). The present study considers added resistance problem of AFRAMAX-class tankers with the conventional bow and Ax-bow shapes. Added resistance due to waves is successfully calculated using 1) a three-dimensional time-domain seakeeping computations based on a Rankine panel method (three-dimensional panel) and 2) a commercial CFD program (STAR-CCM+). In the hydrodynamic computations of a three-dimensional panel method, geometric nonlinearity is accounted for in Froude-Krylov and restoring forces using simple wave corrections over exact wet hull surface of the tankers. Furthermore, a CFD program is applied by performing fully nonlinear computation without using an analytical formula for added resistance or empirical values for the viscous effect. Numerical computations are validated through four degree-of-freedom model-scale seakeeping experiments in regular head waves at the deep towing tank of Hyundai Heavy Industries.
In order to reduce friction and improve reliability, researchers have applied various surface texturing methods to highly sliding machine elements such as mechanical seals and piston rings. Despite extensive theoretical research on surface texturing, previous numerical results are only applicable to isothermal and iso-viscous conditions. Because the lubricant flow pattern of textured bearing surfaces is much more complicated than that for non-textured bearings, the Navier?Stokes equation is more suitable than the Reynolds equation for the former. This study carries out a thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication analysis to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a single micro-dimpled parallel thrust bearing cell. The analysis involves using the continuity, Navier?Stokes, energy, temperature?viscosity relation, and heat conduction equations with the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT. This study discretizes these equations using the finite volume method and solves them using the SIMPLE algorithm. The results include finding the streamlines, pressure and temperature distributions, and variations in the friction force and leakage for various dimple radii and depths. Increasing the dimple radius and decreasing the depth causes a recirculation flow to form because of a strong vortex, and the oil temperature greatly increases compared with the non-textured case. The present numerical scheme and results are applicable to THD analysis of various surface-textured sliding bearings and can lead to further study.
Mixing is most important for developing an electric washer which transforms angular momentum from rotating solid wall to laundry clothes inside it. For magnification of this mixing effect, some inventions are introduced to washing machine system, i. e., washing plate, washing rod, and even for washing cap in a model of a Korean manufacture. However, the previous efforts show dissatisfaction up till now. In this paper, a triumph to enhance mixing effects to increase washing performance is presented and verified by numerical investigation. The present model to simulate a washing tub is the simple circular cylinder with two endwall disks which is completely filled with a viscous liquid. The present improvement is to change mounting position of a bottom disk of the model cylinder. Therefore, the aim of this work just proposes a new idea, which is numerically inspected, to a producer of washing machine, In detail, this invention is alternating the mounting position of a rotating bottom disk. Actually skewed pulsator is placed in steady of a flat disk, so the two endwall disks at top and bottom are not in parallel. The angle between an inclined bottom disk and the horizontal plane is fixed as 5 degree and physical domain to consider poses a sliced cylinder. Flow fields in both a right circular cylinder and the present improved model are fully depicted by numerical integration on a body fitted nonorthogonal regular uniform grid system. Numerical data to explain flow structure are plotted for understanding of the effects of the inclined disk. Also enhanced mixing effects by the inclined rotating disk are gauged by accurate numerical data used in this work.
Turbulent flow analysis is conducted around the multi-stage launch vehicle including base region and detachment motion of strap-on boosters due to resultant aerodynamic forces and gravity is simulated. Aerodynamic solution procedure is coupled with rigid body dynamics for the prediction of separation behavior. An overset mesh technique is adopted to achieve maximum efficiency in simulating relative motion of bodies and various turbulence models are implemented on the flow solver to predict the aerodynamic forces accurately. At first, some preliminary studies are conducted to show the importance of base flow for the exact prediction of detachment motion and to find the most suitable turbulence model for the simulation of launch vehicle configurations. And then, developed solver is applied to the simulation of KSR-III, a three-stage sounding rocket researched in Korea. From the analyses, after-body flow field strongly affects the separation motions of strap-on boosters. Negative pitching moment at initial stage is gradually recovered and a strap-on finally results in a safe separation, while fore-body analysis shows collision phenomena between core rocket and booster. And a slight variation of motion is observed from the comparison between inviscid and turbulent analyses. Change of separation trajectory based on viscous effects is just a few percent and therefore, inviscid analysis is sufficient for the simulation of separation motion if the study is focused only on the movement of strap-ons.

Numerical experiments using a numerical wave tank have been performed to verier the nonlinear interaction between monochromatic waves and a submerged horizontal plate. As a model for numerical wave tank, we used a higher-order Boundary Element Method(BEM) based on fully nonlinear potential flow theory and CADMAS-SURF for solving Navier Stokes equations and exact free surface conditions. Both nonlinear models are able to predict the higher harmonic generation in the shallow water region over a submerged horizontal plate. CADMAS-SURF, which involves the viscous effect, can evaluate the higher harmonic generation by flow separation and vortices at the each ends of plate. The comparison of reflection and transmission coefficients with experimental results(Patarapanich and Cheong, 1989) at different lengths and submergence depths of a horizontal plate are presented with a good agreement. It is found that the transfer of energy from the incident fundamental waves to higher harmonics becomes larger as the submergence depth ratio decreases and the length ratio increases.
