  • Recently, the rheology on the fluidity of materials has been progressed remarkably. Viscosity measurement for precision-accuracy has needed very important to measure the rheological properties of materials in the field of chemistry-fiber, paint, printing-ink, plastics, rubber, foodstuff-industry, etc. And many methods of measurement have been developed lately. So in this experimental study, small capacity torque transducer with type of strain gage, different method against other existing viscometers, measured viscosity about a liquid that has flowing characteristics of newtonian liquid. Using the assumed computational equation of viscosity, it has same value of viscosity in each different radius of rotating cylinder. In the result, this equipment will be used in the viscosity measurement of a liquid taking flowing characteristics of newtonian liquid.

  • The effect of acetic acid concentration on the qualities of mayonnaise was studied. The rheological properties, emulsifying stability and color of the mayonnaise were determined by rotary viscometer, rotary shaker and centrifuge, and color and color difference meter, respectively. The rheological behavior of mayonnaise showed plastic behavior with yield stress and that of shear thinning. The yield stress and consistency index increased as the acetic acid concentration increased. The emulsion stability was lowest at 4% acetic acid concentration and highest at 1% acetic acid concentration. With the increase of the acetic acid concentration, lightness increased and yellowness decreased.

  • Viscosity and zeta-potential of 11.0 wt. % aqueous bentonite suspension containing various electrolytes and hydrogen-ion concentration were measured by using a Couette type automatic rotational viscometer and Zeta Meter, respectively. The effects of pH and elcctrolytes on the rheological properties of the suspension were investigated. A system, which has a large zeta-potcntial, has a small intrinsic relaxation time ${\beta}$ and a small intrinsic shear modulus $1/{\alpha}$ in the Ree-Eyring generalized viscosity equation, i.e., such a system has a small viscosity value, since ${\eta}={\beta}/{\alpha}$. In general, a stable suspension system has large zeta-potential. The stability condition of clay-water suspension can be estimated by viscometric method since stable suspension generally has small viscosity. The correlation between the stability, viscosity and zeta-potential has been explained by the Ree-Eyring theory of viscous flow.

  • Depending on the range of shear rates, temperatures and concentrations, the potato starch suspension in water behaves as a typical dilatant system. The flow curves of the suspension at various concentrations and temperatures were obtained by using a Couette type rotational viscometer. The flow mechanism of the suspension is explained by a structure model of starch granules in the suspension. Based on the experimental results, a general flow equation for the dilatant system is proposed. By analyzing the temperature dependency of the relaxation time, the activation enthalpy and activation entropy for flow in the starch-water suspension were calculated, the former being about 10 kcal/mol.

  • Cement paste is the basic material constituting concrete and the most basic data of workability. This study quantitatively evaluated the measured data using a ring flow and a rotary viscometer to estimate the flow of cement paste, and also evaluated the flow and rheology over time. For this, the current work has studied admixtures that affect the fluidity of cement paste. As a result of the experiment, since fluidity and plastic viscosity are inversely proportional to each other, more experimental studies are needed to obtain high fluidity and high viscosity at the same time.

  • Mammalian hyaluronidases (HAase, EC 3.2.1.35) are a family of enzymes that hydrolyse N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (1-4) glycosidic bonds in hyaluronic acid, which is found in skin, cartilage, and the vitreous body. Although HAase is generally present in an inactive form within subcellular lysosomes, it is released in an active form in some types of inflammation and tissue injuries, thereby contributing to the inflammatory response. The HAase inhibitory activity of 500 methanolic extracts of 500 species from medicinal plants was screened using a Morgan microplate assay. The viscosity of the hyaluronic acid was measured with an Ubbelohde viscometer. Three MeOH extracts inhibited more than 50% of HAase activity at a concentration of 2 mg/ml. HAase inhibitory rates (%) of three species of medicinal plant extracts, Styrax japonica, Deutzia coreana, and Osmanthus insularis were 57.28%, 53.50%, and 53.19%, respectively. The rate of HAase inhibition of the extracts was dose dependent. In the HAase inhibitory assay using the Ubbelohde viscometer, the results were in good agreement with the results from the Morgan assay. The results suggest that HAase inhibitory compounds extracted from the stem of S. japonica, D. coreana, and O. insularis might be multifunctional and prevent the degradation of hyaluronic acid and the induction of allergic reactions and inflammation.

  • Siliceous and calcareous deep-sea core sediments were collected by a multiple corer from the KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area, northeast equatorial Pacific, to compare vane shear strengths measured by two different apparatuses and in different places of on-board and on-land laboratories. The apparatuses were 1) a hand-held vane with four blades of $2.0{\times}2.0$ cm, and 2) a motorized shear vane system with four blades of $1.0{\times}0.88$ attached on a rotational viscometer. Depth profiles of shear strengths of core samples determined by the apparatuses do not show any consistent difference. Also, there is no consistent difference between shear strength values measured on-board and on-land laboratories after storing the core samples for three months in a cold room by a motorized shear vane system. However, there are considerable differences between depth profiles of shear strengths measured at four different points (holes) of a core sample. Moreover, significant differences among the profiles of different tube samples from a multiple corer within a sampling station were observed. Heterogeneity in physical properties of each depth and sediment column, possibly due to bioturbation and bottom current flows, is likely responsible for the differences in the geotechnical properties.

  • A study was carried out to establish a detection method for irradiated black and white pepper. Samples were packed in polyethylene bags and irradiated with 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 15 kGy using a Co-60 irradiator. The samples were suspended in water, and alkalized with sodium hydroxide solution. Apparent viscosity was determined after heat gelatinization using a Brookfield DV-III rotation viscometer at 30。C with 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, and 210 rpm. Means and standard deviations of the viscosities of all samples decreased by increasing the stirring speeds. The viscosities increased in all samples by increasing the concentration. Regression expressions and coefficients of viscosity which decreased with increasing irradiation dose of 10% and 13% black pepper, and 7% and 10% white pepper were 0.9531 (y=-131.29x+1,769.0), 0.9725 (y=-351.33x+4,036.0), 0.9731 (y=2,208.0e${^-0.3546X}$), and 0.9959 (y=5,116.0e${^-0.2887X}$), respectively, at 120 rpm. This trend was similar fur all stirring speeds. These results suggest that the detection of irradiated black and white pepper at various doses is possible by the viscometric method.

  • Perovskite-type oxide $La_{1-x}Sr_xCo_{1-y}Fe_yO_{3-{\delta}}$ sols were prepared by sol-gel method using $La(NO_3)_3{\cdot}xH_2O$, $Sr(NO_3)_2$, $Co(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $Fe(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ as starting materials. The properties of the perovskite-type oxide sols were investigated by viscometer, FT-IR, TG-DTA and XRD. The prepared sols showed 1.16 cp in average viscosity, and a strong acidic condition of pH 0.5, irrespective of composition of the starting materials. The viscosity of sols at the same volume decreases, but the gelation time of sols, at which the sol viscosity increases rapidly, increases when increasing La concentration in composition of starting materials.

  • The effects of epoxy resins and content of catalyst on the cure characteristics were studied by FT-IR, DSC and dynamic viscometer for the thermal properties and rheological properties of the catalytic (N-Benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate, BPH) epoxy thermosetting system. Compared with DSC results of DEGBF containing 0.5wt% BPH, the DSC thermograms of DGEBA containing 0.5wt% BPH indicated that the reaction was faster than that of DGEBF/BPH and the conversion rate of DGEBA/BPH was high in the initial stage of the reaction. As the concentration of BPH increases, the reaction and conversion rates show similar value in both the cases. The influence of hydroxyl group of epoxy resin on gel point defined from the crossover point of storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") could be explained by the formation of 3-dimensional network in the initial stage owing to the curing reaction between epoxides and hydroxyl groups of epoxy resin. This was consistent with the gel point obtained from DSC, FT-IR and moduli crossover. The activation energy (Et) obtained from the crossover point (G'/G"=1) are $31-39kJ.mol^{-1}$ for various BPH compositions in case of two epoxy systems.
