  • A frequency domain response analysis is presented for building frames passively controlled by viscoelastic dampers, under harmonic ground excitation. Three different models are used to represent the linear dynamic force-deformation characteristics of viscoelastic dampers namely, Kelvin model, Linear hysteretic model and Maxwell model. The frequency domain solution is obtained by (i) an iterative pseudo-force method, which uses undamped mode shapes and frequencies of the system, (ii) an approximate modal strain energy method, which uses an equivalent modal damping of the system in each mode of vibration, and (iii) an exact method which uses complex frequency response function of the system. The responses obtained by three different methods are compared for different combinations of viscoelastic dampers giving rise to both classically and non-classically damped cases. In addition, the effect of the modelling of viscoelastic dampers on the response is investigated for a certain frequency range of interest. The results of the study are useful in appropriate modelling of viscoelastic dampers and in understanding the implication of using modal analysis procedure for building frames which are passively controlled by viscoelastic dampers against base excitation.

  • In this study, a new slab system that adjoint precast slabs are connected each other by viscoelastic material is proposed and numerical analysis is performed to evaluate the effect of the slab system on the vibration and noise control. Substructuring is introduced to develope the equation of motion of the slab system and the optimal properties of viscoelastic material are calculated. For the performance evaluation of the new slab system, the sound power and acceleration of the slab are compared with those of two way slab and the slab which the viscoelastic material is not connected. Numerical results show that the sound power of the new slab system can be reduced an amount of 6dB.

  • Viscoelastic dampers have been successfully applied to building structures for reduction of vibration induced by wind or earthquakes. But accurate estimation of responses of building structures with viscoelastic dampers is very difficult, because the properties of viscoelastic damper is dependent on temperature and frequency of vibration. For efficient control of building vibration, required damping of viscoelastic damping device need be estimated and dynamic analysis method which can estimate the response of building structure with viscoelastic damper system is indispensable. In this paper, an efficient dynamic analysis method of a building structure with viscoelastic dampers is proposed. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified comparing analytic results with shaking table test results using reduced building models.

  • The two-dimensional incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid we considered in this research has rapidly oscillating initial conditions which contain both the large scale and small scale information. In order to grasp this double-scale phenomenon of the complex flow, a multiscale analysis method is developed based on the mathematical homogenization theory. For the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic Maxwell fluid, a well-posed multiscale system, including averaged equations and cell problems, is derived by employing the appropriate multiple scale asymptotic expansions to approximate the velocity, pressure and stress fields. And then, this multiscale system is solved numerically using the pseudospectral algorithm based on a time-splitting semi-implicit influence matrix method. The comparisons between the multiscale solutions and the direct numerical simulations demonstrate that the multiscale model not only captures large scale features accurately, but also reflects kinetic interactions between the large and small scale of the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid.

  • The flexural vibration of a sandwich beam with partially inserted viscoelastic layer has been studied using the finite element analysis in combination with an experiment. Effects of length and thickness of partial viscoelastic layers on system loss factor(${\eta}_s$) and resonant frequency(${\omega}_r$) were considerably large. The thicker the viscoelastic layer in a sandwich beam, the larger the system loss factor in Mode 1 as compared with that in Mode 2. The loss factor increased almost linearly with increasing the length of partial viscoelastic layer. Effects of thickness of beams were also considered.

  • This paper aims to analyze the dynamic response of a double nanobeam system with a medium viscoelastic layer under a moving load. The governing equations are based on the Eringen nonlocal theory. A thin viscoelastic layer has coupled two nanobeams together. An exact solution is derived for each nanobeam, and the dynamic deflection is achieved. The effect of parameters such as nonlocal parameter, velocity of moving load, spring coefficient and the viscoelastic layer damping ratio was studied. The results showed that the effect of the nonlocal parameter is significantly important and the classical theories are not suitable for nano and microstructures.

  • The flexural vibration characteristics of a sandwich beam system with a partially inserted viscoelastic layer have been quantitatively studied using a finite element analysis in combination with a sine-sweep test. Antisymmetric mode shapes of the flexural vibration were visualized by the holographic interferometry and agreed with those calculated by the finite element simulation. Effects of the beam thickness as well as the length and thickness of partial viscoelastic layers on the system loss factor(η$\_$s/) and resonant frequency($\omega$$\_$r/) were significantly large fur the symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the beam system.

Asymmetric mode shapes of the flexural vibration were visualized by holographic interferometry, which agreed with those obtained by the finite element simulation. • Structural damping enhancement of composite flexures and aeroelastic stability of a hingeless rotor system are investigated. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments are applied in order to increase structural damping of flexures. Material damping property of viscoelastic layer is modelled as complex modulus. Modal analysis of composite flexures with attached viscoelastic layers and constraining layers are performed using MSC/NASTRAN and the effects of CLD treatments are verified with the modal test results. The composite flexures with CLD are applied to a 4-bladed, 2-meter diameter, Froude-scaled, soft-in-plane hingeless rotor system. The aeroelastic stability is tested at hovering condition and the effects of CLD are investigated. It is shown that the CLD treatment effectively enhance the aeroelastic stability at hover.
