  • In this study, we design an applicable model enabling internet protocol television (IPTV) service providers to use a virtual network (VN) for IPTV service delivery. The model addresses the guaranteed service delivery, cost effectiveness, flexible control, and scalable network infrastructure limitations of backbone or IP overlay-based content networks. There are two major challenges involved in this research: i) The design of an efficient, cost effective, and reliable virtual network topology (VNT) for IPTV service delivery and the handling of a VN allocation failure by infrastructure providers (InPs) and ii) the proper approach to reduce the cost of VNT recontruction and reallocation caused by VNT allocation failure. Therefore, in this study, we design a more reliable virtual network topology for solving a single virtual node, virtual link, or video server failure. We develop a novel optimization objective and an efficient VN construction algorithm for building the proposed topology. In addition, we address the VN allocation failure problem by proposing VNT decomposition and reconstruction algorithms. Various simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed VNT, as well as that of the associated construction, decomposition, and reconstruction algorithms in terms of reliability and efficiency. The simulation results are compared with the findings of existing works, and an improvement in performance is observed.

  • Although designing a virtual topology for all-optical WDM wide-area networks has been extensively studied and several algorithms have been proposed, these algorithms assumed error-free communication between two nodes. However, noises from optical amplifiers and optical cross-connects can degraded the signal, resulting in a nonzero bit-error rate. In this paper, we investigate the effect of physical limitations on the virtual topology design. We show that for side-area all-optical networks where transmission distance is fairly long, virtual topology design algorithm that can determine the locations of opto-electronic(OE) and electro-optic(EO) conversions to set up a connection request with a high BER in a multihop manner.

  • Network virtualization provides a promising tool to allow multiple heterogeneous virtual networks to run on a shared substrate network simultaneously. A long-standing challenge in network virtualization is the Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) problem: how to embed virtual networks onto specific physical nodes and links in the substrate network effectively. Recent research presents several heuristic algorithms that only consider single topological attribute of networks, which may lead to decreased utilization of resources. In this paper, we introduce six complementary characteristics that reflect different topological attributes, and propose three topology-aware VNE algorithms by leveraging the respective advantages of different characteristics. In addition, a new KS-core decomposition algorithm based on two characteristics is devised to better disentangle the hierarchical topological structure of virtual networks. Due to the overall consideration of topological attributes of substrate and virtual networks by using multiple characteristics, our study better coordinates node and link embedding. Extensive simulations demonstrate that our proposed algorithms improve the long-term average revenue, acceptance ratio, and revenue/cost ratio compared to previous algorithms.

  • Topology optimization has been widely used for the optimal structure design for weight reduction and high performance. Since the result of three-dimensional topology optimization is represented by the discrete material distribution in finite elements, it is hard to interpret from a design point of view. In this paper, the method for interpreting three-dimensional topology optimization resuIt into a series of cross-sectional curve representation is proposed and interfaced with the existing CAD system for the practical use. The concept of node density and virtual grid is introduced to transform element density values into grid density and material boundaries in each cross section are identified based on the element volume rate to satisfy the amount of material specified in the original design intent. Design exampIes show that three-dimensional topology result can be converted into a form of curve CAD model and the seamless interface with CAD software can be achieved.

  • This paper studies the issues arising in the virtual topology reconfiguration phase of Multi-wavelength Routed Optical Networks. This reconfiguration process means to change the virtual topology in response to the changing traffic patterns in the higher layer. We formulate the optimal reconfiguration policy as a multi-stage decision-making problem to maximize the expected reward and cost function over an infinite horizon. Then we propose a new heuristic algorithm based on node-exchange to reconfigure the virtual topology to meet the traffic requirement. To counter the continual approximation problem brought by heuristic approach, we take the traffic prediction into consideration. We further propose a new heuristic reconfiguration algorithm called Prediction based Multi-stage Reconfiguration approach to realize the optimal reconfiguration policy based on predicted traffic. Simulation results show that our reconfiguration policy significantly outperforms the conventional one, while the required physical resources are limited.

  • In this paper. we develop an analytical model to evaluate the virtual topology reconfiguration phase of optical Internet networks. To counter the continual approximation problem brought by traditional heuristic approach, we take the traffic prediction into consideration and propose a new heuristic reconfiguration algorithm called Prediction based Multi-stage Reconfiguration approach. We then use this analytical model to study the different configuration operation policies in response to the changing traffic patterns in the higher layer and the congestion level on the virtual topology. This algorithm persists to decide the optimal instant of reconfiguration easily based on the network state. Simulation results show that our virtual topology management Policy significantly outperforms the conventional one, while the required physical resources are limited.

  • We can consider the interconnection structure suing WDM from two different levels, physical and virtual topologies. In the virtual topology, various channels on physical links can be established between transmitters and the receivers of the nodes. It is important to design efficient virtual topologies, because they have a benefit of performance improvement in interconnection networks depending on traffic matrices without changing physical topologies. In this paper we suggest a way to design virtual topologies that minimize average packet delays for given traffic matrices using genetic algorithms.

  • We completed a new cluster system based on WDM by proposing a virtual topology reconfiguration schemes. The key idea of the proposed scheme is to construct a set with the longest chains of requests of connecting nodes which need to be assigned a wavelength. All the sets have no common factor, that is, there is no duplicated link among the requests of connecting. After making the set satisfying this condition, we could assign a wavelength to per corresponding set. We could reconfigure a virtual topology with this scheme collectively. we compared our scheme to existing approaches by the OWns simulation tool. As the results, we gained improved performances, reducing 10% of blocking rate and improving 30% of ADM utilization in terms of the blocking probability and the ADM utilization.
