  • There is a limit to improving the image quality through global processing of images taken under backlighting because too bright and dark parts are mixed in one scene. This paper introduces a method to improve the quality of a photo by making two virtual images that improve the dark and bright areas of a backlit photo, and fusing them with the original image into a Laplacian pyramid. The proposed method reduces the computational burden by using histogram stretching and gamma transformation that can be simplified with LUT when creating the two virtual images. In addition, in order to obtain a color-enhanced image, contrast conversion was performed only on the luminance using the HSV coordinate system. The proposed technique showed its effectiveness by calculating several NIQA indicators using standard image data sets.

  • A new approach of analyzing the displacements and stress of the surrounding rock for shallow tunnels excavated under non-axisymmetric displacement boundary conditions on a vertical surface is investigated in this study. In the proposed approach, by using a virtual image technique, the shear stress of the vertical ground surface is revised to be zero, and elastic solutions of the surrounding rock are obtained before stress revision. To revise the vertical normal stress and shear stress of horizontal ground surface generated by the combined action of the actual and image sinks, the harmonic functions and corresponding stress function solutions were adopted. Based on the Boussinesq's solutions and integral method, the horizontal normal stress of the vertical ground surface is revised to be zero. Based on the linear superposition principle, the final solution of the displacements and stress were proposed by superimposing the solutions obtained by the virtual image technique and the stress revision on the horizontal and vertical ground surfaces. Furthermore, the ground settlements and lateral displacements of the horizontal and vertical ground surfaces are derived by the proposed approach. The proposed approach was well verified by comparing with the numerical method. The discussion based on the proposed approach in the manuscript shows that smaller horizontal ground settlements will be induced by lower tunnel buried depths and smaller limb distances. The proposed approach for the displacement and stress of the surrounding rocks can provide some practical information about the surrounding rock stability analysis of shallow tunnels excavated under non-axisymmetric displacement boundary conditions on a vertical surface.

  • This paper describes a coordinate measuring technique based on optical triangulation using the two images. To overcome the defect of structured light system which measures coordinate point by point, light source is replaced by CCD camera. Pixels in CCD camera were considered as virtual light source. The overall geometry including two camera images is modeled. Using this geometry, the formula for calculating 3D coordinate of specified point is derived. In a word, the ray from a virtual light source was reflected on measuring point and the corresponding image point was made on the other image. Through the simulation result, validation of formula is verified. This method enables to acquire multiple points detection by photographing.

  • With the development of digital technology, a cinematic content has been changed into various forms. Web and mobile platforms bring new forms of cinematic contents. However despite of fast growing of VR(Virtual Reality) technology, they haven't applied to cinematic contents yet. This research focused on the esthetical use of rotoscoping technique for the Virtual Reality Cinema based on the (HMD) Head Mounted Display. First, we look though on VR films 'Notes on Blindness' and 'Pearl' to find how these films express esthetical virtual space. Through this, we found out graphical space provide new esthetical experience to viewers in virtual space. Also, we analyze fantastical usages and successful cases of rotoscoping technique with the 'Waking Life' and 'Scanner Darkly' that utilize rotoscoping technique to live action image. Lastly, we utilize rotoscoping technique esthetically to the VR film 'Girl on a swing' to fulfill the viewers experience and desire.

  • A depth image-based rendering (DIBR) technique is one of the rendering processes of virtual views with a color image and the corresponding depth map. The most important issue of DIBR is that the virtual view has no information at newly exposed areas, so called dis-occlusion. In this paper, we propose an intermediate view generation algorithm using the Kinect depth camera that utilizes the infrared structured light. After we capture a color image and its corresponding depth map, we pre-process the depth map. The pre-processed depth map is warped to the virtual viewpoint and filtered by median filtering to reduce the truncation error. Then, the color image is back-projected to the virtual viewpoint using the warped depth map. In order to fill out the remaining holes caused by dis-occlusion, we perform a background-based image in-painting operation. Finally, we obtain the synthesized image without any dis-occlusion. From experimental results, we have shown that the proposed algorithm generated very natural images in real-time.

  • The techniques of implementing 3D movie have been developed by stereoscopic representation methods of the scene based on human visual experience. Recently, though various novel approaches for stereo movies are proposed to produce realistic 3D image, more study have to be done for compensating keystone distortion which is generated by moving virtual camera. In this paper we propose a novel production technique which minimizes keystone distortion based on analyzing pixel distance, and is easily implemented on popular graphics environment. First, in graphics environment we categorize each objects as individual layers, and extract image data to produce 3D image. The comparison between each animation sequences from proposed and conventional production methods shows that our production technique well compensate the distortion.

  • This paper proposes a virtual target overlay technique for a realistic training simulation which projects a virtual target on ground-based CCD images according to an appointed scenario. This method creates a realistic 3D model for instructors by using high resolution GeoTIFF (Geographic Tag Image File Format) satellite images and DTED(Digital Terrain Elevation Data), and it extracts road areas from the given CCD images for both instructors and trainees, Since there is much difference in observation position, resolution, and scale between satellite Images and ground-based sensor images, feature-based matching faces difficulty, Hence, we propose a moving synchronization technique that projects the targets on sensor images according to the moving paths marked on 3D satellite images. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with satellite and sensor images of Daejoen.

  • This paper proposes a technique for recognizing online handwritten cursive data obtained by tracing a motion trajectory while a user is in the 3D space based on a convolution neural network (CNN) algorithm. There is a difficulty in recognizing the virtual character input by the user in the 3D space because it includes both the character stroke and the movement stroke. In this paper, we divide syllable into consonant and vowel units by using labeling technique in addition to the result of localizing letter stroke and movement stroke in the previous study. The coordinate information of the separated consonants and vowels are converted into image data, and Korean handwriting recognition was performed using a convolutional neural network. After learning the neural network using 1,680 syllables written by five hand writers, the accuracy is calculated by using the new hand writers who did not participate in the writing of training data. The accuracy of phoneme-based recognition is 98.9% based on convolutional neural network. The proposed method has the advantage of drastically reducing learning data compared to syllable-based learning.

  • In this Paper, we Propose web-based Media GIS architecture using 3D geographical database and GPS-related data resulted from 45-Van. We introduce a novel interoperable geographical data service concept; so-called, Virtual World Mapping (VWM) that can map 3D graphic world with real-world video. Our proposed method can easily retrieve geographical information and attributes to reconstruct 3D virtual space according to certain frame in video sequences. Our proposed system architecture also has an advantage that can provide geographical information service with video stream without any image processing procedures. In addition to, describing the details of our components, we present a Media GIS web service system by using GeoVideoServer, which performs VWM technique.

  • The application of 3 dimensional virtual reality continuously pursues 3 dimensional system implementation in geographical information system, and is applied and studied in various fields like visualization, simulation, and 3 dimensional analysis. Orthoimage produced to construct basic data of virtual city is evaluated in accuracy, to fall in allowable error of the specification of image map generation. In this paper, 3 dimensional virtual city is constructed and evaluated around Bucheon University using 3 dimensional virtual reality technique and digital photogrammetry. Consequently, the constructed 3 dimensional virtual city around Bucheon University can visualize 3 dimensional reality, to help making decision. It can be substituted for existed 2 dimensional GIS in public and private sectors, and be helpful to decision makers.
