Effect of Soil Fumigation on Growth, Root Rot, and Red Discoloration of Panax ginseng in Replanted Soils (연작지 토양에서 토양연증제 처리가 인삼의 근부, 적변 및 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of soil fumigation on the growth, yield, root-rot and red discoloration of 2 year-old ginseng, Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer was investigated in the ginseng replanted fie14 Six soil fumigants, Cylone, Basamid, D-D, Dowfume MC-2, Telone C-17, and Vapam were applied in March, 1980, and 2 year-old ginseng plants were transplanted in April, 1981, and sampled in August, 1981. Growth an yields in Cylone and Basamid treated plots in the replanted soil were better than those in control. Especially, growth and yields of ginseng in Cyclone treated Plots were comparable to these in untreated virgin soil. Control effect of soil fumigants used on root-rot was in the order of Cylone, Basamid, Telone C-17, and the lest of them showed neglect fur effect. Frequency of red discoloration was 8% in Cyclone treated plots, 9% in Basamid treated plots 83.3% in the untreated ginseng replanted soil, and 2.5% in the untreated virgin soil.

Seedling Growth of Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) Affected by Composition of its Bed Soil and Height of Front Piller (약토 혼합비율과 해가림 전주 높이에 따른 인삼유묘의 생장)

  • This study was carried out to improve cultivation techniques by low cost and labour saving in ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) seedling production, by elucidating proper ratio virgin soil and organic fertilizer, suitable height of front piller. The obtained results are as follows ; The optimal ratio of white decomposition of virgin soil and organic fertilizer was 10:1 for good yield of standard seedling, The fittest height of front piller was 150 cm because of both good seedling growth and yield. The cost for production of seedling of ginseng could be reduced by both optimal ratio of virgin soil, organic fertilizer and selection of front piller height.

Mineralization of organic materials applied to Korean ginseng (고려인삼(高麗人蔘) 유기질비료(有機質肥料)의 무기화(無機化))

Ginseng field and virgin soils, to which Yakto, washed Yakto, litters (deciduous and coniferous trees) and bone meal were applied, were incubated at 60% of field capacity of the soils to shed light on the production of $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ through mineralization of the organic materials being the nitrogen sources for Korean ginseng. 2. Total nitrogen content mineralized in the soils, to which the following organic materials were applied, was:bone meal>Yakto${\gg}$litter (deciduous trees)> washed Yakto, litter (coniferous trees). The content increased with incubation time in all the virgin and ginseng field soils excepting only the virgin soils applied with washed Yakto and litters of which the contents decreased. A large part of nitrogen mineralized in the virgin and ginseng field soils to which Yakto was applied was nitrate form, while a half ginseng field soils and a considerable part in the other virgin soils was ammonium form in the other treatments. 3. $NH_4-N$ content produced in the virgin and ginseng field soils applied with bone meal increased with the time, while it decreased in the other treatments. And the content in the soils applied with bone meal was very high. 4. $NO_3-N$ content showed a continuous increase during the incubation time in all treatments of ginseng field soils and only in the virgin soil to which Yakto was applied, wherease it showed almost no change in the other treatments of virgin soils. And the content in the soils applied with Yakto was very high. 5. Yakto was expected to supply nitrate enough to meet amounts of nitrogen required by ginseng with different ages and also expected to increase in soil fertility, while bone meal was expected only to supply much nitrogen of which a considerable part was ammonium form.

A Study on the Measuring about the Coefficient of Earth Pressure at Rest 1 (정지토압계수 측정에 관한 연구 1)

  • It is very important to determine the coefficient of earth pressure at rest accurately in order to estimate the behavior of soil structure. For estimation of K/sub 0/-value depending upon the stress history of dry sand, a new type of K/sub 0/-oedeometer apparatus is devised, and the horizontal earth pressure is accurately measured. For this study, 2 types of one-cyclic K/sub 0/-Loading/unloading models have been studied experimentally using four relative densities of the sand. The results obtained in this test are as follows : K/sub on'/ the coefficient of earth pressure at - rest for virgin loading is a function of the angle of internal friction Φ' of the sand and is determined as K/sub on/=1 - 0.914 sin Φ', K/sub ou'/ the coefficient of earth pressure at rest for virgin unloading is a function of K/sub on/ and over consolidation ratio(OCR), and is determined as K/sub ou/=K/sub on/(OCR)K/sup a/. The exponent α, increases as the relative density increases. K/sub or'/ the coefficient of earth pressure at rest for virgin reloading decreases in hyperbola type as the vertical stress, σ/sub v/’, increases. And, the stress path at virgin reloading leads to the maximum prestress point, independent upon the value of the minimum unloading stress. The gradient of this curve, m/sub r/ increases as OCR increases.

Strengthening of cement blended soft clay with nano-silica particles

  • In recent years, Nano-technology significantly invaded the field of Geotechnical engineering, particularly in soil stabilisation techniques. Stabilisation of weak soil is envisioned to modify various soil characteristics by the addition of natural or synthetic materials into the virgin soil. In the present study, laboratory experiments were executed to investigate the influence of nano-silica particles in the consistency limits, compressive strength of the soft clay blended with cement. The results revealed that the high compressibility behaviour of soft clay modified to medium-stiff condition with fewer dosages of cement and nano-silica. The mechanism behind the strength development is verified with the previous researches as well as from Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction test (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Based on the results, the presence of nano-silica in soft clay blended with cement has a positive effect on the behaviour of soil. This technique proves to be very economical and less detrimental to the environment.

  • This work presents an experimental study of the hydromechanical behavior of a natural swelling soil taken from Boumagueur region east of Algeria. Several pathological cases due to the soil shrinkage / swelling phenomenon were detected in this area. In a first part, the hydric behavior on drying-wetting paths was made, using the osmotic technics and saturated salts solutions to control suction. In The second part, using a new osmotic oedometer, the coupled behavior as a function of applied stresses and suction was investigated. It was shown that soil compressibility parameters was influenced by suction variations that an increase in suction is followed by a decrease in the virgin compression slope. On the other hand, the unloading slope of the oedometric curves was not obviously affected by the imposed suction. The decrease in suction strongly influences the apparent preconsolidation pressure, ie during swelling of the samples after wetting.

Studies on Soil Mites by Altitude in Mt. Paektu (백두산의 토양진드기류 조사)

  • The results of a week-long exploration, which was conducted on the soil mite of Mt. Paektu area by our team of the Ecological Society of Korea from July 22nd till July 27th of 1997, are as follows. All mite were picked and examined from the soil of 2,000 cm$^{2}$ from eight respective zones. The total number collected was 384 individuals with 20 families, 33 genera, 38 species including 42 individuals of unknown species. They were classified and identified as 13 families 18 genera 22 species of Oribatei, 4 families 11 genera 12 species of Mesostigmata, 2 families 3 genera 3 species of Prostigmata. Among them 5 species of Laelaptidae, Ascidae and Uropodidae couldn't be classified and identified owing to the shortage of reference. in alphine tundra zone 91 individuals were found, which outnumbered than that of the other surveyed areas. The mite that existed evenly in all around the surveyed areas was Tectocepheus sp. and 32 individuals of them were collected from the virgin forest zone. A comparatively small number of mite was found from sungsaha and the intersection of three streets in Mt. Paektu and Songkangjin town, which accoumts for soil picking from unsuitable places.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the status of organic phosphorus in soils originated from different parent materials and under different uses(Virgin, rice soil, upland). The results are summarized as a following. 1. Regardless of parent materials and land uses, the contents of different forms of organic phosphorus are in the order of unidentified organic-P>Inositol-P>Sugar-P>Lipid-P. 2. In case of Inositol-p, the contents were in the order of rice soil>upland>virgin soil. 3. The contents of Sugar-P and Lipid-P in cultivated soils are higher than in uncultivated soil. 4. RNA and DNA are not identified in any soil when detected by ultra-violet absorption method. 5. There is highly significant correlation between the content of soil organic matter and that of organic phosphate. However, there is remarkable difference in the pattern of correlation between cultivated soils and uncultivated soils. 6. Comments were made on the factors on plant availability of various organic phosphorus.

Soil Erosion and Sediment Yield Reduction Analysis with Land Use Conversion from Illegal Agricultural Farming to Forest in Jawoon-ri, Kangwon using the SATEEC ArcView GIS System (SATEEC ArcView GIS 시스템을 이용한 홍천군 자운리 유역 무허가경작지의 산림 환원에 따른 토양유실 및 유사저감 분석)

  • The fact that soil loss causing to increase muddy water and devastate an ecosystem has been appearing upon a hot social and environmental issues which should be solved. Soil losses are occurring in most agricultural areas with rainfall-induced runoff. It makes hydraulic structure unstable, causing environmental and economical problems because muddy water destroys ecosystem and causes intake water deterioration. One of three severe muddy water source areas in Soyanggang-dam watershed is Jawoon-ri region, located in Hongcheon county. In this area, many cash-crops are planted at illegally cultivated agricultural fields, which were virgin forest areas. The purpose of this study is to estimate soil loss with current land uses (including illegal cash-crop cultivation) and soil loss reduction with land use conversion from illegal cultivation back to forest. In this study, the Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) ArcView GIS system was utilized to assess soil erosion. If the illegally cultivated agricultural areas are converted back to forest, it is expected to 17.42% reduction in soil loss. At the Jawoon-ri region, illegally cultivated agricultural areas located at over 30% and 15% slopes take 47.48 ha (30.83%) and 103.64 ha (67.29%) of illegally cultivated agricultural fields respectively. If all illegally cultivated agricultural fields are converted back to forest, it is expected that 17.41% of soil erosion and sediment reduction, 10.86% reduction with forest conversion from 30% sloping illegally agricultural fields, and 16.15% reduction with forest conversion from 15% sloping illegally agricultural fields. Therefore, illegally cultivated agricultural fields located at these sloping areas need to be first converted back to forest to maximize reductions in soil loss reduction and muddy water outflow from the Jawoon-ri regions.
