  • The $\alpha$,$omega$-diacrylate poly(dimethylsiloxane) (DA-PDMS) containing vinyl ester of versatic acid/vinyl acetate (Veova-10/VAc) was prepared by emulsion copolymerization of (DA-PDMS), Veova-10 (with VAc), and auxiliary agents at $85^{\circ}C$ in the presence of ammonium peroxodisulfate (APS) as an initiator. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonylphenol ethylene oxide-40 units (NP-40) were used as anionic and nonionic emulsifiers, respectively. The resulting copolymers were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by using thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The morphology of copolymers was also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and then the effects of variables such as temperature, agitation speed, surfactant kinds, molecular weights, initiator, and DA-PDMS concentrations on the properties of the silicone-containing Veova-10/VAc emulsions were examined. The calculation of monomer conversion versus time histories indicates that by increasing the DA-PDMS concentration the polymerization rate and the number of polymer particles decrease, respectively.

  • Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanocomposite microspheres with a core/shell structure have been developed via a suspension polymerization approach. In order to prepare the PVAc/ MMT and PVAc/PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres, which are promising precursor of PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres, suspension polymerization of vinyl acetate with organophilic MMT and heterogeneous saponification were conducted. A quaternary ammonium salt, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, was mixed with the MMT in the monomer phase prior to the suspension polymerization. The rate of conversion decreased with an increase in MMT concentration. The incorporation of MMT into the PVAc was verified by FT-IR spectroscopy. Organic vinyl acetate monomers were intercalated into the interlayer regions of organophilic clay hosts and followed by suspension polymerization. Partially saponified PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres with a core/shell structure were successfully prepared by heterogeneous saponification.

  • Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) was used successfully to control the size and distribution of silver nanoparticles generated on inorganic silica nanofibers. The inorganic nanofibers were electro spun using sol-gel chemistry of silicates, and the diameter of the prepared nanofibers was unaffected by adding up to 7% of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). The silver ions, in the form of silver nitrate, were introduced into the silica nanofibers and reduced to metallic silver by ultraviolet irradiation with a subsequent thermal treatment. The size of the generated silver particles was decreased dramatically by adding poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). The size of the silver nanoparticles was 73 nm when no poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) was added but 23 nm with the addition of only 1% of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). The extent of reduction could be checked by determining the concentration of silver ions leached into water from the silica nanofibers. After thermal treatment of the silica nanofibers, more than 99% of the silver remained in the nanofibers, indicating almost complete reduction of the silver ions to silver metal.

  • A series of four sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty vinyl ester oligomers including sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ lauric acid vinyl ester oligomer, sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ myristic acid vinyl ester oligomer, sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ palmitic acid vinyl ester oligomer and sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ stearic acid vinyl ester oligomer were examined for surface activities such as surface tension, foaming power, foam stability, emulsifying power, dispersion effect, solubilization of orange OT. The critical micelle concentration(CMC) was also evaluated. Consequently, these sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers were shown to have a good cohesive power and dispersion effect.

  • An automated reaction calorimeter was used to directly monitor the rate of emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAs) having different degrees of blockiness. By using this technique in conjunction with other off-line measurements of the evolution of particle size distributions, important details of the process were observed. No constant graft rate period was observed for both low and high initial monomer-water ratios. The gel effect was observed for the low monomer-water ratio recipe. The particle size distributions were broad (particle diameter 40~100 nm) and bimodal. Continuous nucleation was observed to be accompanied by 'limited aggregation' and flocculation during the particle growth stages. It was speculated to be due to the occurrence of the extensive 'limited aggregation' and chain transfer to PVA leading to grafting.

  • HEMA/vinyl-substituted polyphosphazene was prepared by the ring-opening polymerization of phosphonitrillic chroride trimer at $200{\sim}300\;{^{\circ}C}$, followed by Grignard reaction with vinyl magnesium bromide and then by the reaction with HEMA(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). HEMA/vinyl-substituted polyphosphazene was copolymerized with EGDMA(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate; used as a cross-linker for the free-radical copolymerization), NVP (N-vinyl-pyrrolidone) in the presence of AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) as a radical initiator. The oxygen transmissibility, water content and visible-ray transmissibility of the resulting copolymer were measured to be Dk/t 88, 30.89% and 87%, respectively, indicating that the copolymer can be used as a good contact lens material.

  • 압전성과 초전성을 나타내는 고분자인 poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF)는 poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl acetate), 및 Poly(vinyl methyl ketone)(PVMK) 등과 블렌딩하면 혼화성(miscibility)이 있다.
