Dual-Mode Liquid Crystal Devices with Switchable Memory and Dynamic Modes

  • A liquid crystal device with switchable dynamic and memory modes was investigated and developed. The proposed device reveals the splay, $\pi$-twist, and bend states via selective switching among them. In the dynamic mode, the device is operated in the bend state, which exhibits a wide viewing-angle and a fast-response-time due to its self-compensated bend structure and flow-accelerated fast response time, respectively. In the memory mode, the permanent memory characteristics in the splay and $\pi$-twist sates are obtained, respectively. The switching mechanisms of the tristate device are also proposed.

  • We have achieved 180-degree angle of view performance using Super-PVA (S-PVA) technology first time in TFT-LCD industry. 82" full high definition ($1920{\times}1080$) TFT- LCD panel, the world's largest TFT-LCD, have been developed. In addition to the size breakthrough, this product achieves 600nits brightness, over 1200:1 contrast ratio, viewing angle free, 92% color gamut, and 8ms response time. Several key enabling technologies were developed to achieve these specifications, including two transistor direct driven independently controlled S-PVA subpixels, non even area ratio sub-pixels for optimal offaxis gamma, gate overlap driving for larger driving margin, new CCFL technology for higher color gamut, and advanced fabrication techniques including the use of Samsung's new $7^{th}$ generation line.

주간 하늘에 노출된 평판에 의한 복사냉각 실험 (Radiant Cooling by the Plate Viewing the Daytime Sky)

  • The purpose of this study is to check whether the plate temperature could be lower than the surrounding air by using the radiant cooling during the day time in summer at Seoul. Without an insolation shield as this experiment was performed, a few cases were found. The temperatures of the black painted plate are lower than those of the aluminium film coated plate if the following condition exist; no or small insolation over the plate, the wind velocity less than around 2 m/s, and clear sky However if there are insolation over the plate, the temperatures of the aluminium coated plate are lower than the black painted plate. Also, as the wind velocity increases, the plate temperature decreases faster. The temperature response of the small system is much faster than the large system.

  • We propose advanced liquid crystal display (LCD) modes through surface modification using UV curable reactive mesogen (RM) mixed with alignment layers. The LC directors on the modified alignment layer are controlled and memorized by the polymerized RMs under an applied voltage. Using the method proposed here, we can improve the response time and viewing angle characteristics through surface controlled patterned vertical alignment (SC-PVA) mode and 8-domains PVA mode, respectively. Also, we found that the method can be applicable to fabricate multi-domain structures using multiple UV exposure as same as conventional UV alignment method.

  • Optically compensated bend (OCB) mode has intrinsic characteristics such as wide viewing angle and fast response time. However, in order to operate the OCB mode in bend state, this device needs quick transitions from the initial splay state to bend state. In this paper, we proposed OCB mode with initially bend state using reactive mesogen (RM) monomer for surface polymer stabilization. The device shows continuous reorientation of the LC with applied field and a very fast response time.

  • The electro-optical (EO) performances of a multidomain verticial-alignment (MYA) cell on a homeotropic photopolymer have been investigated. In the absence of an electric field, the WVA cell achieved black state as LC alignment is homeotropic An electric field created by interdigitated electrodes and rib made after photolithograph using the photopolymer on both substrates causes a director deformation of a multidomain type. Good voltage transmittance curves for a MVA cell on the homeotropic photopolymer were observed. Also, the stable response time of MYA cell on the homeotropic photopolymer can be achieved.

  • The field sequential liquid crystal display (FSLCD) does not need a color filter so that it is suitable for high resolution display. However, FSLCD has a drawback which requires a fast response time of sub-5 ms. We have studied the FSLCD with electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) mode. The ECB mode exhibits fast response time, high transmittance, low operating voltage and adequate viewing angle with a help of optical compensation films. In this paper, we present electro-optic characteristics of the ECB mode using a discotic film.

방송클립동영상 이용이 방송 시청의도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Using Shot Clip on the Broadcasting Viewing Intention)

  • 본 연구에서는 방송클립동영상 이용이 VOD 구매의도와 본방송 시청의도에 영향을 줄 수 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 방송클립동영상 이용자를 대상으로 설문조사를 통해 이용동기와 이용시간, 이용시점, 장르, 이용패턴 등의 이용경험 중심으로 살펴보았다. 연구결과를 요약하면, 방송클립동영상 이용동기 변인에서는 대인관계와 전체방송 대비이점이 높을수록, 방송클립동영상 이용경험 변인에서는 교육 장르, 게시된 영상보기, 게시된 영상 공유 및 추천을 이용하는 정도가 높을수록 VOD를 구매하고자 하는 의도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 방송클립동영상 이용동기 변인에서는 이용유연성이 높을수록, 방송클립동영상 이용경험 변인에서는 드라마/영화 장르와 게시된 영상에 대한 댓글 읽기 및 작성 등과 같은 이용이 높을수록 본방송을 시청하고자 하는 의도가 높은 것으로 나타났다.

암순응 환경에서 조도수준과 표적크기가 탐지시간에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Illumination and Target Size on Time-To-Detect while Recovering Dark Adaptation)

  • Effects of dark adaptation have large safety implications. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of varying illuminance and the size of critical detail on visual performance (i.e., time-to-detect) in a dark room environment. While adapting to the dark environment, ten subjects were asked to detect and answer simple numerical expressions under 9 experimental conditions (3 illuminance level $\times$ 3 target size). The ANOVA results revealed that the time-to-detect was significantly affected by both of the illumination level and the size of critical detail. As illumination increased from 10 lux to 20 lux, the time-to-detect was significantly declined. For the size of critical detail, 0.5/min size (i.e., equal to 2 minutes of visual angle) resulted in a shorter time-to-detect, as compared to 0.7/min size (i.e., equal to 1.6 minutes of visual angle). Potential applications of this research include the development of design guidelines for illumination and warning signs in poorly illuminated viewing environments.

실시간 고화질 영상에 대한 웹기반의 HLS 멀티뷰 시스템 설계 (Web-based HLS(Http Live Streaming) Multi-view System for Real-time High Quality Video)

  • 최근 고화질 영상 입력장치가 일반화 되고 있으며, 실시간으로 입력된 영상을 한 곳에서 동시에 볼 수 있는 중앙관제시스템이 필수 요소가 되고 있다. 이때 프로그램을 따로 설치하지 않고, 웹을 통한 접근을 하려는 시도들이 있으나, 여러 개의 고화질 영상을 동시에 웹 브라우저를 통해 시청하려하면, 웹 브라우저가 강제 종료되는 현상이 발생된다. 본 논문에서는 실시간 고화질 영상에 대한 웹기반의 HLS 멀티뷰 시스템을 제안한다. 화면으로 보이는 멀티뷰 화면을 트랜스코딩을 통해서 재구성하였고, 보안의 취약점이 있는 ActiveX를 사용하지 않으면서도, 통시에 웹브라우저를 통해서 여러 영상 입력을 모니터링 할 수 있는 시스템을 구현 하였다.
