For VBR video traffic, Motion-Picture Experts Group(MPEG) coding algorithm was adopted as the standard coding algorithm by International Telecommunication Union(ITU). In this paper, we propose a traffic model of an MPEG coded video traffic in frame level and cell level, and develop an approximate model for evaluating performance of a ATM multiplexer with homogeneous MPEG video sources by considering burst-level variation of aggregated traffics. For homogeneous MPEG video traffics which are frame-synchronized, the performance of the ATM multiplexer is influenced by source correlation at the multiplexing time. When sources are highly correlated, we decompose the aggregated cell streams by the frame-type and model multiplexing process during a frame time as n*D/D/1/K queueing model and suggest an approximate method for obtaining CLP of the ATM multiplexer. In the case that sources are highly correlated, the solution has the meaning of the upper bounds of performance of the ATM multiplexer. For the verification of our model, we compare the solution of our model with simulation resets. As the number of sources increases. The CLP obtained from our model approaches to simulation results, and gives upper bounds of simulation results.
Thanks to the great possibilities of providing different types of telecommunication traffic to a large geographical area, satellite networks are expected to be an essential component of the next-generation internet. As a result, issues concerning the designing and testing of efficient connection-admission-control (CAC) strategies in order to increase the quality of service (QoS) for multimedia traffic sources, are attractive and at the cutting edge of research. This paper investigates the potential strengths of a generic digital-video-broadcasting return-channel-via-satellite (DVB-RCS) system architecture, proposing a new CAC algorithm with the aim of efficiently managing real-time multimedia video sources, both with constant and high variable data rate transmission; moreover, the proposed admission strategy is compared with a well-known iterative CAC mainly designed for the managing of real-time bursty traffic sources in order to demonstrate that the new algorithm is also well suited for those traffic sources. Performance analysis shows that, both algorithms guarantee the agreed QoS to real-time bursty connections that are more sensitive to delay jitter; however, our proposed algorithm can also manage interactive real-time multimedia traffic sources in high load and mixed traffic conditions.
This paper considers the problem of performance analysis for the multiplexer, when homogeneous periodic on-off sources are statistically multiplexed. Periodic on-off source model is defined that on-period and off-period are repeated by once in a deterministic periodic time and in on-period, cell arrives with deterministic time interval. In order to reflect periodicity of source model, we consider two multiplexing situation, such as random multiplexing and synchronized multiplexing. In both case, we obtain the overload-period distribution in the multiplexer, and an approximate method using the overload period distribution is suggested for obtaining the CLP(Cell Loss Probability) in the buffer of the multiplexer. A numerical example using MPEG-I real traffic samples and the results are also presented.

After the introduction of ATM as a proper technology for B-ISDN, there have been many research efforts to realize ATM networks. But a computationally tractable modelling technique which reflects diverse characteristics of the ATM traffic accurately is not available yet. In this study, we try to establish an accurate but still convenient ATM traffic model. We first introduce the modelling technique for the voice traffic based on the fluid flow approximation. Then we present a traffic model for the mixed traffic from multiple video sources and voice sources. The video source model is based on the 3 state continuous time Markov chain. The accuracy of the model is demonstrated by some comparison results with respect to simulation.
Many recent studies have been conducted involving the transport of constant and variable bit rate MPEG-2 video in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. In this study, the traffic control of supporting MPEG-2 video communications in ATM networks under unloaded or loaded network conditions, in which the generated traffic sources are bursty in nature, are considered. We analyse about MPEG-2 traffic and design a model, which makes use of the ATM OAM funcation in order to support the traffic control functions. To implement the model, we propose a scheme, which combines the performance management OAM function and the bandwidth allocation function. Especially, we design this scheme to control the VBR (Variable Bit Rate)MPEG-2 video traffic.

In this paper, we propose an analytic method for dimensioning of traffic descriptors at the leaky bucket-based UPC for VBR MPEG video traffic on ATM networks. We analytically derive cell violation probabilities at the UPC by using the proposed scene-based video traffic model, and then we show that it is possible to select sets of traffic descriptors that have the same required violation probability. For two example video traces, numerical results show that our proposed traffic descriptors dimensioning method can approximate well the simulation-based traffic control results of the real video traces. When the effective bandwidth allocation method of an ON/OFF model is used for the call admission control in the networks, we present an efficient traffic descriptor selection method by studying the allocated bandwidth to each possible traffic descriptor set.

It is expected that the transport of compressed video will become a significant part of total network traffic because of the widespread introduction of multimedial services such as VOD(video on demand). Accordingly, VBR(variable bit-rate) encoded video will be widely used, due to its advantages in statistical multiplexing gain and consistent vido quality. Since the transport of video traffic requires larger bandwidth than that of voice and data, the characterization of video source and traffic modeling is very important for the design of proper resource allocation scheme in ATM networks. Suitable statistical source models are also required to analyze performance metrics such as packet loss, delay and jitter. In this paper, we analyzed and described on the characterization and traffic modeling of MPEG video sources. The models are broadly classified into two categories; i.e., statistical models and deterministic models. In statistical models, the models are categorized into five groups: AR(autoregressive), Markov, composite Marko and AR, TES, and selfsimilar models. In deterministic models, the models are categorized into $({\sigma},\;{\rho}$, parameterized model, D-BIND, and Empirical Envelopes models. Each model was analyzed for its characteristics along with corresponding advantages and shortcomings, and we made comparisons on the complexity of each model.

Two main characteristics of VBR MPEG video traffic are different statistics according to different picture types and the periodic traffic pattern due to GOP structure. Especially, the I-pictures at the beginning of each GOP generate $$\mu$h more traffic than other pictures. When several VBR Mpeg video sources are superposed, the I-picture starting times of these sources may significantly affect the cell loss characteristics of ATM $$\mu$tiplexers. In this paper, we propse a performance model for ATM $$\mu$tiplexers with VBR MPEG video sources whose starting times are arbitrary given. For analysis, both single and superposed source traffic are modeled as NDPPs (non-deterministic periodic processes), and the ATM $$\mu$tiplexer is modeled as a U-state NDPPD/D/1/B queueing system. It is hown that the numerical results are very close to the si$$\mu$ation results. From the relationships between the starting tiem distributions and the corresponding $$\mu$tiplexer performances, some considerations for designing a scheduling policy in order to obtain the maxi$$\mu$$$\mu$tiplexing gain are presented.

In this paper, a model for two-layered video traffic is proposed. The performance analysis of the proposed model and the effects of two-layer coding scehemes in ATM networks are also studied. ATM-based networks give the possibility to support image codingat variable bit rate(VBR). Two layer coding is one of the very promising methods among many proposed methods to compensate the cell loss, the major drawback in ATM networks. From the experimental data of the 2-layer coded video traffics, it is observed that traffic patterns of base layer and enhanced layer are highly correlate to each other, when constant image quality is kept. With this observation, coded two layered video traffic can be modeled as 2-dimensional Markov chain. The model well fit the real experimental data. The model was used for the analysis of the performance of statistical multiplexer with priorites in ATM networks.

Until now, the transmission of data for VOD(Video on Demenad) was based on a real time modelling of video data. Markow Modulated Fluid Sources(MMFS) and Markow Modulated Poisson Sources(MMPS) are the most widely used modelling methods. But the charactersitics of the VBR(Variable Bit Rate) signal prevents modelling from actually being "real-time". Also these methods call for the use of large buffers for the abolishment of cell loss. These modelling methods are, of course, useful i case of teleconferences where a real time modelling of video traffic is inevitable, but they are insufficient in cases where the characteristic infomation of video traffic can be obtained beforehand-cases such as VOD. Video data is speial in that if one file is preprocessed all other products can simply be copied from that onepreprocessed file. This characteristic helps reduce the overhead arising from the job of drawing out characteristic information to almost zero. But still, compared to the existing real time modelling method data transmission using characteristic information succeeds in raising the efficiency of data transmission. In tis paper we will outline a method of dta transmission which use the characteristic information of each video stream, and evaluate this method through some experiments.periments.
