An ultrasonic motor of high torque with a new configuration for application in automobiles is proposed. The newly designed stator is two sided vibrator consisting of a toothed metal disk with a piezoelectric ceramic ring bonded on both faces of the disk which generates a flexural traveling wave along the circumference of disk. In this configuration, the displacement on the surface of stator may not be confined. It also produces a large vibrating force and amplitude because the vibrator is sandwiched by two piezoelectric plates. It is possible to increase the torque by improving the vibration characteristics. To compute the vibration mode of the motor of diameter 48 mm, the finite element method was used. A 6th mode was chosen as the operation mode with a resonance frequency of about 64.4 kHz. According to this design and measured its performance, a prototype was fabricated. The performance measurement of the prototype motor showed that its stall torque was about 1.8 Nm and efficiency was 37 % at 60 % of the maximum torque.
A linear ultrasonic motor was designed by a combination of the first longitudinal and fourth bending mode, and the motor consisted of a straight aluminum alloys bar bonded with a piezoelectric ceramic element as a driving element. That is,$L_1-B_4$ linear ultrasonic motor can be constructed by a multi-mode vibrator of longitudinal and bending modes. Linear ultrasonic motors are based on an elliptical motion on the surface elastic body, such as bar or plates. In general, the natural resonance frequency of the stator is used as a driving frequency of the motor which provides a large elliptical motion. The corresponding eigenmode of one resonance frequency can be excited twice at the same time with a Phase shift of 90 degrees in space and time. And the rotation can be reversed by changing the phase between the two signals from sin$\omega$t to cos$\omega$t. Moreover, the tangential force pushes the slider(rotor) and, therefore, determines the thrust and speed of the motor. The experimental results of fabrication motors, bimorph-tyPe motor showed more excellent than unimorph-type. The maximum speed of TBL-200, TBL-300, TBL-400, TBL -220, TBL-310 and TBL-420 motors were 0.12, 0.37, 0.39, 0.14, 0.55 and $0.60ms6{-1}$, respectively. And the efficiency were reported 1.15, 7.9, 6.6, 2.36, 10.1 and 16.5%, respectively. That time, output thrust of the motor was a strong(1~2N) and the weight of stator was a lightness(5~7g).
An ultrasonic linear motor was composed of a slider and a stator vibrator including piezoelectric material and elastic material. The ultrasonic linear motors mainly consist of an ultrasonic oscillator which generates elliptical oscillations. Elliptical oscillations are generated by synthesizing two degenerated modes. Direction of vibratory displacement was analyzed by employing the finite element method. So, we could recognize that the direction of the slider's movement was controlled by changing the Phase difference of the drive voltage.

In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element method and construction of equivalent-circuit for a linear ultrasonic motor are presented. The validity of three-dimensional finite element routine in this paper is experimentally confirmed by analyzing impedance of a piezoelectric transducer. Using this confirmed finite element routine, impedance and vibration mode of a linear ultrasonic motor are calculated. Elliptical motion of contact point between vibrator and rail of the linear ultrasonic motor is shown for determination of contact points. By using the finite element method and analytic equations, characteristics of the linear ultrasonic motor, such as thrust force, speed, losses, powers and efficiency, are calculated. The results are confirmed by experiment. Finally, equivalent circuit parameters of the linear ultrasonic motor are obtained using the three-dimensional finite element method and analytic equations.
In this paper, we studied efficiency improvement of linear ultrasonic motor using projection. The principle of ultrasonic motor is to use an elliptic motion generated at the side of the vibrator, and the elliptic motion of the ultrasonic motor was obtained by complex oscillation of L$_1$-B$_4$ mode. As the experimental results, the efficiency of linear ultrasonic motor without projection was 1.52[%] when applied voltage was 56[V] in resonance frequency 58.4[kHz]. The efficiency of linear ultrasonic motor using projection was 3.36[%] when applied voltage was 56[V] in resonance frequency 58.4[kHz]. The efficiency was improved by projection.
This paper describes with the stator analysis and design of a ring type ultrasonic motor. The design for piezoelectric ceramic and elastic body of stator were calculated by using the finite element method (FEM) that consider the resonance frequency, vibration mode and coupling efficiency. Namely, such results were acquired the calculation result of the piezoelectric ceramic thickness 0.5[mm], elastic body thickness 2.0[mm], resonance frequency 51.8[kHz], vibration mode 7 order and coupling efficient 12.5[%], the outer and inner diameter of vibrator 50[mm], 38[m]. On the basis of such result, the ring type ultrasonic motor was manufactured. Also for driving characteristics of ring type ultrasonic motor, 2-phase inverter was constructed. Then the propriety of this paper was established from comparision of the simulation and an experiment results of the ring type ultrasonic motor.
In this paper, we studied the properties of small-size disk-type ultrasonic motor using travelling wave for the application to the precise control robotic joint motor and fabricated it. The diameter of the ultrasonic motor fabricated was 13mm. Also, the piezoelectric vibrator was constructed by piezoelectric ceramic and elastic material. The piezoelectric ceramic was composed to PZ-PT-PMN which was shown the high electromechanical stability under high vibration level and stainless steel was used as the elastic material in which configuration was disk-type. To conform the capability of application to robotic motor, we measured the change of rotational speed according to applied voltage and applied frequency. As the results, the small-size disk-type ultrasonic motor was able to fabricate, and the revolution speed was 350 (rpm) when input voltage was 55 (Vrms) and applied frequency 160.4 IkHz] under pre-load.
Piezoelectric ceramics can provide electro-mechanical transduction with high stresses but low displacement. To obtain larger displacements, several mechanical amplifying structures have been used. High alternating displacements can be obtained using resonant structure. In this paper, we designed a bolt-tightened Langevin type ultrasonic vibrator whose resonant frequency is 50[kHz] and ceramics are multilayered. FEM(Finite Element Methode) was employed to calculate. the resonant frequencies and maximum displacements of designed vibrators. The designed resonant frequency and computer calculated frequencies were coincided. When input voltages were increased, the maximum displacements also rose. As AC voltage was applied, the maximum displacement were shown sinusoidal changes. Terminal input admittance over a frequency range spanning the resonant frequency were calculated. ANSYS was used to find resonant frequencies and calculate displacements of vibrators.
In this study, multilayer structured ultrasonic linear motor was simulated using Atila for investigating its optimum driving conditions. The ultrasonic linear motors mainly consist of an ultrasonic vibrator to generate elliptical displacement. The ultrasonic linear motor simulated in this paper was the use of the 1st longitudinal(Ll) and 4th bending vibrations (B4). Whit the increase of the number of piezoelectric actuator layers, displacement of node was increased. Maximum total displacement of node was about $3,91{\mu}m$ at the 13 layered ultrasonic motor under 5 V.
