  • The passage of railway vehicles generates mechanical vibrations and noises. This problem can be mitigated by the 'floating slab track' that isolating from infrastructures by installing vibration isolator in the concrete slab track. In the previous researches, adjacent floating slab tracks are connected by dowel bar system. It has been reported that many dowel bars with less diameter show better load transfer efficiency (LTE) compared to small number of dowel bars with larger diameter under the condition of the same dowel area. In this study, dowel system is further considered as a concrete anchorage system and the design strength of the dowel system was evaluated based on ACI code 318-08 Appendix D. The design strength of dowel system is then verified against failure load test of floating slab system.

  • A simplified calculation method of natural vibration characteristics of high-speed railway multi-span bridge-longitudinal ballastless track system is proposed. The rail, track slab, base slab, main beam, bearing, pier, cap and pile foundation are taken into account, and the multi-span longitudinal ballastless track-beam-bearing-pier-cap-pile foundation integrated model (MBTIM) is established. The energy equation of each component of the MBTIM based on Timoshenko beam theory is constructed. Using the improved Fourier series, and the Rayleigh-Ritz method and Hamilton principle are combined to obtain the extremum of the total energy function. The simplified calculation formula of the natural vibration frequency of the MBTIM under the influence of vertical and longitudinal vibration is derived and verified by numerical methods. The influence law of the natural vibration frequency of the MBTIM is analyzed considering and not considering the participation of each component of the MBTIM, the damage of the track interlayer component and the stiffness change of each layer component. The results show that the error between the calculation results of the formula and the numerical method in this paper is less than 3%, which verifies the correctness of the method in this paper. The high-order frequency of the MBTIM is significantly affected considering the track, bridge pier, pile soil and pile cap, while considering the influence of pile cap on the low-order and high-order frequency of the MBTIM is large. The influence of component damage such as void beneath slab, mortar debonding and fastener failure on each order frequency of the MBTIM is basically the same, and the influence of component damage less than 10m on the first fourteen order frequency of the MBTIM is small. The bending stiffness of track slab and rail has no obvious influence on the natural frequency of the MBTIM, and the bending stiffness of main beam has influence on the natural frequency of the MBTIM. The bending stiffness of pier and base slab only has obvious influence on the high-order frequency of the MBTIM. The natural vibration characteristics of the MBTIM play an important guiding role in the safety analysis of high-speed train running, the damage detection of track-bridge structure and the seismic design of railway bridge.

  • A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the modes of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by Kim, D. H. in 1974. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the three span continuous reinforced concrete bridge with elastic intermediate supports is presented. Such bridge represents either concrete or sandwich type three span bridge on polymeric supports for passive control or on actuators for active control The concrete slab is considered as a special orthotropic plate. The influence of the modulus of the foundation and $D_{22}$, $D_{12}$, $D_{66}$ stiffnesses on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

  • Most widened bridges have been constructed by the joining-construction method that makes new and existing bridge structurally single structure. However, joing-construction method has several problems in design and construction viewpoint. Therefore, this study is conducted in order to investigate structural behavior of widened RC slab and traffic-induced vibration of existing bridge during placing and curing of new concrete by the prototype flexural fatigue test. From the results of this study, it is shown that stress-concentration and slip occur between concrete and reinforcing rod at joint section but the reduction of load carrying capacity and of fatigue strength is negligible according to the traffic-induced vibration as well as the difference of construction method. A reasonable construction method for the bridge widening which takes into account the effects of the traffic-induced vibration and S-N curve for the widened bridge are also proposed.

  • The objective of this paper is to address to the providing an adequate noise and vibration solution, required for High Speed Rail while maintaining the stability criteria of the ChonAn station structure, the first constructed in Korean High Speed Railway. The significant acoustic pressure level will be induced by the high speed trains passing-by. Therefore, the high level study of this case is necessary. The acoustic pressure level of 85 dB(A) inside the ChonAn station is expected, and the spaces below concrete slab are not suitable for commercial purpose, thus installation of filtering systems (spring boxes containing viscous dampers, ballast mats and acoustic shield) are provided to reduce the effect of the noise and vibration to acceptable level of 55 dB(A). But, a major drawback of application of the previously conducted experimental results was that the actual effect of installation of filtering system was never been validated. Therefore, the acquisition of noise and vibration on the present structure were obtained and compared to the computer simulations. These predicted the behavior of the station reasonably well. Also, the installation of filtering systems gave the superior reduction on noise and vibration. This application is successfully adapted without scarifying stability criteria related to the structural stability including excessive deformations or displacements. Three traffic operation safety limits: deck vertical acceleration, deflection of the structure, and longitudinal displacement of the slab were satisfactory.

  • Composite floor structures formed by continuous slab panels may be susceptible to excessive vibrations, even when properly designed in terms of ultimate limit state criteria. This is due to the inherent vibration characteristics of continuous floor slabs composed by precast orthotropic reinforced concrete panels supported by steel beams. These floor structures display close spaced multimode vibration frequencies and this dynamic characteristic results in a non-trivial vibration problem. Structural stiffening and/or insertion of struts between floors are the usual tentative solution applied to existing vibrating floor structures. Such structural alterations are in general expensive and unsuitable. In this paper, this vibration problem is analyzed on the basis of results obtained from experimental measurements in typical composite floors and their theoretical counterpart obtained with computational modeling simulations. A passive control system composed by multiple synchronized dynamic attenuators (MSDA) was designed and installed in these floor structures and its efficiency was evaluated both experimentally and through numerical simulations. The results obtained from experimental tests of the continuous slab panels under human walking dynamic action proved the effectiveness of this control system in reducing vibrations amplitudes.

  • The conventional techniques for the prediction of natural frequency are often used to estimate the floor vibration. However. the predicted frequency differs significantly from the measured one since the predicted equation is not able to proper1y treat various material type. Transformation of slab section is necessary to predict natural frequency of composite deck plate, and this effort is complicated due to the various shape of each deck plate. In this study, a new simplified methodology to transform slab section is proposed, which treats effective depth as the distance from the top of a concrete topping to neutral axis of each deck plate. Finally proposed equation with fairly reasonable result compared to the measured values is obtained. based on the modification of vibration equation from LRFD theory. This efforts enhance errors in predicting frequency up to 15%.

  • Recently, it is frequently reported that fatigue damages of deck slabs and floor systems of highway bridges occur under the conditions of increasing weight and traffic of heavy vehicles. These troubles are affected by dynamic wheel load of heavy vehicles running on roadway surface roughness with bump at expansion joint. It is required that this kind of traffic-induced vibration of highway bridges must be analyzed by using three-dimensional models of bridge and vehicle. In this study, the three-dimensional dynamic analysis is carried out, and dynamic responses of deck slab and wheel loads of moving vehicle are estimated according to different vehicle speeds and bump heights. Analytical responses of bridge deck slab are compared with experimental ones which were measured at Umeda entrance bridge of Hanshin Expressway in Osaka.
