This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with general boundary condition. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of a arch element acting the stress resultants and the inertia forces, the governing differential equation is derived for the in-plane free vibration of such arches. Differential equations are solved numerically to calculate natural frequencies. In numerical examples, the parabolic arch is considered. The effects of the arch rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the vertical spring coefficient and the rotational spring coefficient on the natural frequencies are analyzed.
Tests were conducted at the Florida International University (FIU) Wall of Wind (WOW) to investigate the susceptibility of Variable Message Signs (VMS) to wind induced vibrations due to vortex shedding and galloping instability. Large scale VMS models were tested in turbulence representative of the high frequency end of the spectrum in a simulated suburban atmospheric boundary layer. Data was measured for the $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ horizontal wind approach directions and vertical attack angles ranging from $-4.5^{\circ}$ to $+4.5^{\circ}$. Analysis of the power spectrum of the fluctuating lift indicated that vertical vortex oscillations could be significant for VMS with a large depth ratio attached to a structure with a low natural frequency. Analysis of the galloping test data indicated that VMS with large depth ratios, greater than about 0.5, and low natural frequency could also be subject to galloping instability.
In this paper, we address an active vibration control system, which suppresses the vibration engaged by magnetically levitated stage. The stage system consists of a levitating platen with four permanent magnetic linear synchronous motors in parallel. Each motor generates vertical force for suspension against gravity and propulsion force horizontally as well. This stage can generate six degrees of freedom motion via the vertical and horizontal forces. In the stage system, which represents the settling-time critical system, the motion of the platen vibrates mechanically. We designed an active vibration control system for suppressing vibration due to the stage moving. The command feedforward with inertial feedback algorithm is used for solving stage system's critical problems. The components of the active vibration control system are accelerometers for detecting stage tables's vibrations, a digital controller with high precise signal converters. and electromagnetic actuators.

This paper describes a helicopter vibration induced by main rotor in forward flight. The hub loads in the fixed frame, which are dominant source of helicopter vibration, are obtained by multi-blade summation of rotating blades loadings. The components of 3/rev, 4/rev, and 5/rev blades loadings are transmitted by blades to 4/rev hub loads in the fixed frame. The vertical vibrations of helicopter at pilot seat and copilot seat are calculated through rigid body transfer functions considering airframe to be rigid body. The blades are assumed to be elastic and undergo the flap, lag, and torsion motion and free wake aerodynamic model is used to calculate the precise blade loadings in the analysis. The 4/rev vertical vibration responses are analyzed from rotating blade loadings and fixed hub loadings.

Shock-type vibrations are usually experienced in vehicles excited by impulsive forces. Fifteen subjects used magnitude estimation to judge the discomfort of vertical shock-type vibration generated on a rigid seat. The shocks had different frequencies and magnitudes and were produced from the response of a 1 degree-of-freedom model to a half-sine force input. The magnitudes of the shocks, expressed in terms of both peak-to-peak value and un-weighted vibration dose values, VDVs, were correlated with magnitude estimates of the discomfort. In this study, equivalent comfort contour of shock-type vibration were obtained. From the contour, it was investigated that shock-type vibration at frequency below 0.8 Hz and between 4.0 Hz and 10.0 Hz is highly sensitive to the discomfort than at other frequencies.

This study aims to find frequency weighting curves for the evaluation of drivers' discomfort by vertical and rotational steering wheel vibration. Equal sensation curves, inverse of frequency weighting curves, were determined for the two kinds of vibrations respectively by using the sinusoidal signals with reference amplitudes from 0.2 to 0.4 m/s2 in the frequency range from 5 to 100 ㎐. Twelve subjects joined at the tests, and median values of the twelve judgments were used to determine the equal sensation curves. An experiment was followed to compare the relative sensation magnitude between the two kinds of equal sensation curves, which showed discomfort by the rotational vibration was 1.5 times of that by the vertical vibration at 50 ㎐.
The paper deals with the finite element modelling of the free vibration and structural behavior of a particular four-floor reinforced concrete structure subjected to static equivalent seismic loads and supported by a shallow foundation system called SNSF (Spider Net System Footing). The two FE models are a simple 2D Matlab model and a detailed 3D model based on solid elastic elements using Altairworks (Hypermesh and Optistruct). Both models can simulate the soil structure interaction. We concentrate on the behavior of a representative cell involving two columns on five levels. The influence of the boundary conditions on the external vertical planes of the domain are duly studied. The Matlab model appears relevant for a primary estimation of frequencies and stiffness of the whole structure under vertical and lateral loads.
In this paper, design parameters of dynamic vibration absorber, which is used to reduce bending vibrations of a vehicle drive line, is optimized. For obtaining the correct dynamic response characteristics, a flexible-body drive line is made by applying the flexibility data extracted from vibration analysis of propeller shafts to the drive line dynamic model. Inner tube mass, rubber stiffness and rubber damping coefficient of the dynamic vibration absorber are taken as design parameters for optimization. To minimize the vertical acceleration of the drive line, a second-order regression equation of the objective function is generated by performing the central composite experimental design with 3 factors, 2 levels and 15 test runs. And the design parameters of the dynamic vibration absorber are determined by using optimization program. The vehicle model with optimized dynamic vibration absorber reduces the vertical acceleration peak of the drive line by 17.1 % in compared with the initial model.

The suspension system of a subway vehicle is composed of $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ springs. The suspension system is the most important parameter in determining the vibration ride comfort. If the $1^{st}$ suspension spring is designed as a spring with strong stiffness to improve the running stability at high speed, it causes vehicle vibrations. In this paper, by testing and analyzing changes of the characteristics of Chevron springs, which have been the primary suspension springs used for about 20 years, we study how changing the characteristics affects vehicle acceleration and ride comfort. The lateral and longitudinal vibrational ride comfort index levels were lower than the vertical ones. Therefore, as increasing the stiffness of Chevron springs has the greatest effect on the vertical vibrational ride comfort index level, a countermeasure for vertical vibration reduction is needed when the stiffness increases owing to aging. Finally, maintenance guidelines, including the replacement time for the Chevron rubber, were proposed based on these findings.

The three-dimensional correction factor of the added mass of finite-length elliptic cylinders in vertical vibration in a free surface was calculated. This problem has already been dealt by T. Kumai[5] to contribute to analytical prediction of the three-dimensional correction factor for the added mass in vertical vibration of ships. In Kumai's work, the body boundary condition involved in the appropriate boundary value problem was approximately treated in the course of obtaining the solution. In this work, obtaining the solution derived from mathematically exact treatment of the body boundary condition, the author recalculated the three-dimensional correction factor for length-beam ratio $4{\sim}8$, beam-draught ratio $2.00{\sim}4.50$ and number of nodes from 2 to 7. And the numerical results were compared with both Kumai's results and the author's experimental data for two and three-noded vibrations of the cylinder of beam-draught ratio 2.40 The comparison of the numerical results shows that the author's are always higher than the Kumai's as expected. And the comparison of the numerical results with experimental data shows that the Kumai's numerical results have less deviation in case of two-noded vibration, and that, in case of three-noded vibration, the author's numerical results are in fairly good correspondence.
