  • The sliding stability of monolithic vertical caisson of composite breakwaters is quantitatively analyzed by using a reliability model, FMA of Level II, in order to study the variation of sliding failure of caisson due to the occurrence of extreme waves exceeded deepwater design wave. The reliability index and several parameters in the wave pressure formula are inter- related to find out the effects of extreme wave exceeded design wave on the sliding failure of vertical monolithic caisson. The sliding failure of caisson seems to be largely increased as the heights and periods of extreme waves exceeded design wave increase, also depends directly on the water depth in front of the composite breakwaters. From the numerical simulations carried out with several kinds of extreme waves exceeded design wave which are assumed to be occurred during the service periods of breakwater, it is found that the effects of the wave height on the sliding failure of caisson may be more dominant than those of wave periods and angles of wave incidence.

  • Goda formula (Goda, 1973) has been used in the determination of wave pressures acting on a large size caisson such as the pier of the cable stayed bridge at sea. Goda formula, however, is to evaluate the wave pressures acting the infinite vertical caisson of composite breakwater so that it can`t be applied to a large caisson with finite width and length because of diffraction effects. In the present study, three dimensional nonlinear frequence domain method based on perturbation method and boundary integral method is applied to the computation of the linear and nonlinear wave pressures acting on the front of a large size caisson under the variation of its width and length, and angle of incident wave. The numerical results are compared to Goda\`s ones, and then the characteristics of wave pressure distributions acting on a large size caisson are discussed.

  • Recently numerical approaches for wave loads acting on the vertical caisson of breakwater, and resulting wave reflection and transmission coefficients have been performed. Although the numerical studies by Sulisz's(1997) and Kim et al.(2000) are suggested representatively, theoretical formulation for nonlinear wave pressure is not developed yet. And experimental results of Sulisz(1997) revealed that nonlinear uplift pressure on the caisson may be produced largely on the case of caisson founded on the high rubble mound. From the results of this study, the nonlinear theory for the uplift wave pressure acting on the caisson by applying boundary integral method of Green theorem is formulated, and also the characteristics of nonlinear uplift pressure and run-up height on the caisson are evaluated numerically, according to the variations of hydraulic properties of the rubble mound.

  • The caisson of the inner wall type has a weak point that reflecting wave is big. Therefore it has been studied that the research of the decreasing reflecting wave using installation the perforated wall in front of caisson to decrease of that weak point. In this study, we analyzed the characteristic of reflection horizontal and diamond style vertical slit caisson using hydraulic model test. According to the results of experiments, we could confirm that diamond style vertical caisson has a reflection coefficient which has lower than horizontal caisson of the reflection coefficient of 5~10%.

  • In order to reduce wave reflection from a breakwater, a perforated wall caisson is often used. A conventional perforated wall caisson breakwater for which the water depth inside the wave chamber is the same as that on the rubble mound berm has less weight than a vertical solid caisson with the same width and moreover the weight is concentrated on the rear side of the caisson. • The movement of the caisson used to construct a wharf front can affect functional performance of the port. Sequential movement of caissons at each stage of the construction is essential in the overall design as well as the stability of the port. It is common that back-analysis using the previous measurement is performed to predict the caisson movement, while there is no intensive study on sequential movement of the caissons according to the construction stage. In the study, we analyzed the pattern of the movement of caissons as a port is constructed. To simulate the construction of the port, the finite element method (FEM) is employed. The computed result shows that the caisson moves differently at each construction stage. When the caisson is being installed, the displacement of the caisson takes place mainly in vertical direction. In next stage of filling rocks behind the caisson, the top of the caisson move toward shore, while the bottom moves toward sea, thus rotating the caisson. The maximum rotation of the caisson takes place in the stage of filling rocks behind the caisson.

  • Foundation plays an important role in the offshore wind turbine system. Different from conventional foundations, the suction caisson is proven to be economical and reliable. In this work, three-dimensional finite element method is used to check the suitability of suction caisson foundation. NREL 5MW wind turbine is chosen as a baseline model in our simulation. The maximum overturning moment and vertical load at the mudline are calculated using FAST and Bladed. Meanwhile the soil-structure interaction response from our simulation is also compared with the experiment data from Oxford university. The design parameter such as caisson length, diameter of skirt and spacing of multipod are investigated. Accordingly based on these parameters suggestions are given to use suction caisson foundations more efficiently.

  • Hydraulic experiments were performed in order to gain an insight into the quantitative differences between the perforated wall caisson and its solid wall counterpart in the local pressure distribution and caisson stability. The results showed that the wave forces acting on local walls were smaller in the perforated wall caisson than in the solid wall caisson. For the caisson stability, the critical weights of the perforated wall caisson also turned out to be smaller than those of the solid wall caisson. The Phenomenon was attributed to the dual effects inherent to the perforated wall caisson, which are the decrease of total horizontal force and the phase difference between the total horizontal and vertical forces.

  • Recently, some attempts to construct slit caisson-type breakwaters are made in Korea. Since slit caisson-type breakwaters are suitable for relatively deep sea areas, a lot of theoretical and experimental researches have been performed. In this study, the reflection characteristics of vertical slit caisson breakwaters are investigated based on the measured data in two-dimensional hydraulic model tests with irregular waves. The experiments were conducted for various cases; variation of porosity of perforated-wall, width of wave chamber, number of slits for single-and double-chamber, respectively. It is found that in the case when the wave steepness (H/L$_{s}$ ) is small, the reflection coefficients are large. The existing researches have shown that the wave reflection is minimized when the nondimensional width of wave chamber B/L is about 0.2~0.25 for the regular waves. However, for the irregular waves the reflection is lowest when $B/L_2$, is 0.13~0.15. For a same porosity condition, the wave dissipation is stronger as the width of s1it is larger. The double-chamber caisson is superior to single- chamber caisson in the wave dissipating effects.

  • Centrifuge modeling and numerical analysis on works of breakwater construction were performed to investigate the behavior of caisson type of breakwater and foundation treated with the method of DCM (Deep Cement Mixing) under the condition of wave action in field. In centrifuge modeling, construction sequence of breakwater caisson such as preparation of ground, treatment of DCM, installation of rubble mound, placement of breakwater caisson and lateral loading on the breakwater due to wave action were reconstructed. Lateral movement of model breakwater and ground reaction in the vertical direction were monitored during test. Stress concentration ratio between the untreated ground and the treated ground with DCM was evaluated from measurement of vertical stresses on each ground. Numerical analysis with the software of PLAXIS was carried to compare with Results of centrifuge model test. It was found that stability of model breakwater was maintained during stage of construction and the compared results about stress concentration ratio were in relatively good agreements.
