This study was carried out for the purpose of comparing in reference to sand drain in the next three different cases. First, The case of drain material (sand pile) has some rigidity during embankment and consolidation. Second, In usual case of no rigidity as a paper drain without permeability during embankment and consolidation Third, Check up clay behavior when above the two cases carried out respectively. This FEM analysis is consisted with Biot's consolidation equation when it is used for Christian Boehmer's numerical technique. The main results are obtained from above the Analysis When sand drain has some rigidity, the lateral and vertical deformation of clay foundation is restrained considerable amount and .exhibited bearing capacity of load as a pile According to the foundation in drained condition and untrained condition, the results are much variable in this analysis method. Also, The behaviors of stress path and pore water pressure met our expectation during , consolidation. This analysis should be considered to put into use of sand drain and design in future.
There are many large-scale coastal region landfill and land development by loading to use territory efficiently, this regions are mostly soft clay ground. Constructing structures and road on the soft ground bring about engineering problems like ground shear fracture and a big amount of consolidation by bearing capacity. Improvement of soft soil is required to secure soil strength and settlement control. In improvement of soft soil, predict for the amount of settlement based on field surveyed reports are important element for estimating pre-loading banking height and the final point of consolidation. In this study, there is calculating theoretical settlement by analyzing field surveyed report and ground investigation to improvement of soft soil with pre-loading and vertical drain method. And present settlement prediction method reflect soil characteristics in Gimpo Hangang site by analysing prediction settlement and observational settlement during compaction using hyperbolic, ${\sqrt{s}}$, Asaoka method.
Formation used as trackbed foundation for providing vertical bearing capacity onto rail foundation are composed of crushed stones usually with certain type of grain size distribution. Permanent deformation in trackbed foundation can be generated by increasing number of load repetition due to train traffic increases, causing track irregularity. In this study, a specially prepared trackbed foundation materials (M-40) used in Korea has been tested using a large repetitive triaxial compression apparatus in order to understand resilient and permanent deformation characteristics of the material. From these test results, resilient and permanent deformation characteristic are analyzed so that a permanent deformation model is developed which can consider number of load repetition N, confining stress (${\sigma}_3$), shear stress ratio(${\tau}/{\tau}_f$) and stiffness of the material.

The settlement of a compaction plate resting on the surface of rubble-mound and subjected to a vibrating vertical load can be characterized by a transient amplitude and a plastic settlement. As long as the maximum imposed load does not exceed the bearing capacity of the rubble-mound, plastic settlement will approach an ultimate value and essentially steady-state vibration will ensue. For the settlement behavior by vibro-compaction, most laboratory experiments were conducted on laterally confined samples with loads over the full surface area or on samples placed on a vibrating table. In the field, the loads cover only a small fraction of the surface area. In this study, crushed stones are loaded with the same as field condition. According to the vibro-compaction experiments on crushed stone, it was found that approximately 90% of total settlement occur within 2 minutes and plastic settlement increases with increasing cyclic stress levels including static and dynamic stress. A compaction equation on which the number of load cycles, amplitude of plate, settlement, width of plate, and cyclic stress are related each other is proposed.
The increasing lack of good quality soils allowing the development of roadway, motorway, or railway networks, as well as large scale industrial facilities, necessitates the use of reinforcement techniques. Their aim is the improvement of the global performance of compressible soils, both in terms of settlement reduction and increase of the load bearing capacity. Among the various available techniques, the improvement of soils by incorporating vertical stiff piles appears to be a particularly appropriate solution, since it is easy to implement and does not require any substitution of significant soft soil volumes. The technique consists in driving a group of regularly spaced piles through a soft soil layer down to an underlying competent substratum. The surface load being thus transferred to this substratum by means of those reinforcing piles, which illustrates the case of a piled embankment. The differential settlements at the base of the embankment between the soft soil and the stiff piles lead to an "arching effect" in the embankment due to shearing mechanisms. This effect, which can be accentuated by the use of large pile caps, allows partial load transfer onto the pile, as well as surface settlement reduction, thus ensuring that the surface structure works properly. A technique for producing rigid piles has been developed to achieve in a single operation a rigid circular pile associated with a cone shaped head reversed on the place of a rigid circular pile. This technique has been used with success in a pile-supported road near Bourgoin-Jallieu (France). In this article, a numerical study based on this real case is proposed to highlight the functioning mode of this new technique in the case of industrial slabs.
Shear walls are a typical member under a complex stress state and have complicated mechanical properties and failure modes. The separated-elements model Genetic Evolutionary Structural Optimization (GESO), which is a combination of an elastic-plastic stress method and an optimization method, has been introduced in the literature for designing such members. Although the separated-elements model GESO method is well recognized due to its stability, feasibility, and economy, its adequacy has not been experimentally verified. This paper seeks to validate the adequacy of the separated-elements model GESO method against experimental data and demonstrate its feasibility and advantages over the traditional elastic stress method. Two types of reinforced concrete shear wall specimens, which had the location of an opening in the middle bottom and the center region, respectively, were utilized for this study. For each type, two specimens were designed using the separated-elements model GESO method and elastic stress method, respectively. All specimens were subjected to a constant vertical load and an incremental lateral load until failure. Test results indicated that the ultimate bearing capacity, failure modes, and main crack types of the shear walls designed using the two methods were similar, but the ductility indexes including the stiffness degradation, deformability, reinforcement yielding, and crack development of the specimens designed using the separated-elements model GESO method were superior to those using the elastic stress method. Additionally, the shear walls designed using the separated-elements model GESO method, had a reinforcement layout which could closely resist the actual critical stress, and thus a reduced amount of steel bars were required for such shear walls.
The construction of combined pile-raft foundations is considered as the main option in designing foundations in high-rise buildings, especially in soils close to the ground surface which do not have sufficient bearing capacity to withstand building loads. This paper deals with the geotechnical report of the Northern Fereshteh area of Tabriz, Iran, and compares the characteristics of the single pile foundation with the two foundations of pile group and geogrid. Besides, we investigate the effects of five principal parameters including pile diameter and length, the number of geogrid layers, the depth of groundwater level, and pore water pressure on vertical consolidation settlement and pore water pressure changes over a year. This study assessed the mechanism of the failure of the soil under the foundation using numerical analysis as well. Numerical analysis was performed using the two-dimensional finite element PLAXIS software. The results of fifty-four models indicate that the diameter of the pile tip, either as a pile group or as a single pile, did not have a significant effect on the reduction of the consolidation settlement in the soil in the Northern Fereshteh Street region. The optimum length for the pile in the Northern Fereshteh area is 12 meters, which is economically feasible. In addition, the construction of four-layered ten-meter-long geogrids at intervals of 1 meter beneath the deep foundation had a significant preventive impact on the consolidation settlement in clayey soils.

With bending moment, torsional moment due to geometric properties as "Initial curvature" acts in horizontally curved I-girder. These behavior causes the secondary effect of bending in minor-axis because of interaction between bending and torsion. The bending and torsion interaction cause a loss of load bearing capacity by induced the early inelastic or plasticity condition in curved girder. Also eccentric load by movements of traffic can increase torsion. However, Equation of interaction between bending and torsion for straight girder, not deal with characteristics of curved girder behavior in previous studies, can be overestimated for ultimate strength in horizontally curved I-girder acting vertical force. Therefore, using more rational, obvious suggestion is required when design curved girder. In this study, we identified the bending-torsional moment interaction for the horizontally curved I-girder of the eccentric load acting by FEM analysis.
Seismic isolation and vibration control techniques have been developed and put into practical use by challenging researchers and engineers worldwide since the latter half of the 20th century, and after more than 40 years, they are now used in thousands of buildings, private residences, highways in many seismic areas in the world. Seismic isolation and vibration control structures can keep the structures undamaged even in a major earthquake and realize continuous occupancy. This performance has come to be recognized not only by engineers but also by ordinary people, becoming indispensable for the formation of a resilient society. However, the dynamic characteristics of seismically isolated bearings, the key elements, are highly dependent on the size effect and rate-of-loading, especially under extreme loading conditions. Therefore, confirming the actual properties and performance of these bearings with full-scale specimens under prescribed dynamic loading protocols is essential. The number of testing facilities with such capacity is still limited and even though the existing labs in the US, China, Taiwan, Italy, etc. are conducting these tests, their dynamic loading test setups are subjected to friction generated by the large vertical loads and inertial force of the heavy table which affect the accuracy of measured forces. To solve this problem, the authors have proposed a direct reaction force measuring system that can eliminate the effects of friction and inertia forces, and a seismic isolation testing facility with the proposed system (E-isolation) will be completed on March 2023 in Japan. This test facility is designed to conduct not only dynamic loading tests of seismic isolation bearings and dampers but also to perform hybrid simulations of seismically isolated structures. In this paper, design details and the realization of this system into an actual dynamic testing facility are presented and the outcomes are discussed.
Piled raft is known to be an unfavorable foundation type in soft clay because foundation is associated with both excessive settlement and bearing capacity failure problems. Despite these reasons, in recent decades, an increasing number of structures have been constructed over soft clay area, piled raft concepts arouse interest as the foundation of structures on soft clay area becomes popular. This study described 3 dimensional behavior of piled raft on soft clay based on a numerical study using 3D finite element method. A series of numerical analyses were performed for a various pile lengths and the pile configurations on the raft were subjected to vertical uniform or point loading. Based on the results of the parametric study, comparisons were made among the effect of loading type, various pile length and configurations, and the load-settlement behavior and load sharing characteristics of piled raft were also evaluated. From the results, the characteristic of piled raft on soft clay was examined.
