A Study of Thermal Behaviors on the Effect of Aspect Ratio of Ventilation Hole in Disk Brake (디스크 브레이크의 방열구 형상비에 따른 열적 거동에 관한 연구)

  • The adequate design of a passenger car braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The thermal behaviors of the ventilated disk has been investigated based on the air cooling effects during repeat braking operations. In this study, the thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of aspect ratio of ventilated hole on the heat dissipation was investigated.

  • In this research, I would like to choose sliding distance and ventilated hole number which affect to the amount of wear of disk and pad as experiment conditions of 'the amount of wear' through wear test of motorcycle brake disk. Also, I analyze the amount of wear according to the variation of coefficient of friction by using design of experiment that is being widely used in diverse areas. With the tests of least, I present the correlation of each experiment condition. Therefore, I analyzed the variation of the amount of wear of disk and pad according to test factors such as ventilated hole number, applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance in wear test of motorcycle brake disk by applying the design of experiment. Also, I analyzed quantitatively the influence of test factors through Taguchi Robust experimental design, response surface and examined the most suitable level and estimation of the amount of wear of disk. From these, I reached the following conclusions. response surface design, mathematical model was constructed about amount of wear of disk and pad. The amount of wear that decrease according to increase of ventilated hole number, and it's increase according to Increase of applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance.

  • The thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk was studied using a disk-on-pad type friction tester. Thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk have an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors on thermal deformation volume. In this study, the thermal deformation volume with ANSYS workbench are obtained by application of temperature from mechanical test. From this study, the result was shown that the motorcycle break disk with ventilated hole 3 have the most excellent thermal deformation characteristics. The regression equation with frictional factors which have a trust rate of 95% for prediction of thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk was composed.

  • The effect of frictional factors on thermal stress and deformation volume of motorcycle brake disk was studied by using a disk-on-pad type friction tester. It has an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors. In this study, thermal stress and deformation volume by using design of experiment with 4 elements were investigated for thermal analysis with regression analysis. Thermal stress and thermal deformation are obtained by the application of temperature from mechanical test. From this study, the result showed that the motorcycle brake disk with ventilated hole 3 had the most excellent thermal stress and deformation volume. The regression equation had a trust rate of 95% for the prediction of thermal stress and deformation volume of motorcycle brake disk was composed.

  • The effect of manufacturing parameters on friction characteristics of motorcycle break system was studied using a disk-on-pad type friction tester. Such parameters conditions have an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors. In this study, the friction characteristics using design of experiment containing 3 elements were investigated for an optimal condition for the best motorcycle break system employing Full factorial design. From this study, the result was shown that the applied load in frictional factors was the most important, next to sliding speed, number of ventilated disk hole.

  • This research is to numerically investigate the convective cooling performance in the Disk brake. Research concentrates on the heat transfer coefficient and cooling performance which are selected with cooling local locations. Cooling performance of the Hole disk has been compared by Ventilated Disk. According to the results of heat transfer on the disk brake, activated velocity distributions more appear in the Hole disk. This is due to the fact that a number of hole units have exactly 120 on the surface of the hole disk. Therefore, velocity distributions of hole disk brake is better activated than Ventilated disk. According to the calculations of Nusselt number between surface and atmosphere in the interested cooling area, average value of cooling effect has been increased 13.5% by the hole disk at driving of speed 65 km/h situation and grown 18% by the hole disk at driving speed of 100 km/h. Due to the flow of air through the hole route, cooling performance of the hole disk was very excellent. In addition, cooling effect on edge of the bottom is better than the vicinity of center.

  • The heat generated in contact type braking system can cause an unacceptable braking performance. Thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system is presented in this paper. The temperature and velocity fields of 3-D unsteady simulated model are obtained using a software package "FLUENT". The numerical results show that there exits a temperature nonuniformity between the disk faces contacting with pads. The conduction rate through the disk and pad is calculated and the effect of material conductivity is also investigated.estigated.

  • Disk brake system transforms a large amount of kinetic energy to thermal energy in a short time. As the size and speed of automotive increases in recent years, the disk brakes absorbs more thermal energy. And this thermal energy can cause an unacceptable braking performance due to the high transient temperature, that is attained at the friction surface of brake disk and pad. Although these high temperatures are one of the biggest problems. In this study, the overall thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of several parameters such as the repeated braking, inlet air velocity and thermal conductivity on the temperature distribution were investigated.

However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors on thermal stress of motorcycle break disk. For this, temperature of motorcycle break disk is measured using a disk-on-pad type friction tester with full factorial design containing above 4 elements. and the thermal stress analysis of it was carried out using with ANSYS workbench. From this study, the result was shown that the regression equation which have a trust rate of 95% for thermal stress presumption of motorcycle break disk with frictional factor was composed. It is possible to apply for another automobile parts.
