Generally, among many kinds of shading devices such as venetian blind, sunscreen, louver and curtain, venetian blind is using widely because the mechanism is so simple and easy to use solar insolation by controlling the slat angle. Analysis of time dependent heat transfer through the window with venetian blind is very important in order to use it effectivly. Therefore, in this study, theoretical thermal analysis method was developed to analyze time dependent heat transfer through a double pane window with and without venetian blind, and was made one module of TRNSYS(A Transient Simulation Program)program. By this way, it was analyzed that how much the variation of slat angle, slat colour and slat absorptivity of venetian blind would be affected on the heating and cooling load of building, and also which colour and angle of slat was optimal for the heating and cooling load of building.
This study has attempted to investigate how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort according to daylight responsive LED(Light Emitting Diode) dimming systems in the office with venetian blind. Two studies was conducted. First study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on angle control method of the venetian blind while the workplane illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. Second study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on the amount of daylight penetrated into the building while the illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. The results of this study could be proposed as basic data in the control of the venetian blind and LED lighting in consideration of their perception on changes of brightness and visual comfort.
Purpose: Most modern office buildings adopt the curtain wall system in order to provide occupants with the sense of openness and high-technology, which requires large window area. As a result, the amount of solar radiation increases, negatively affecting cooling load during the summer and increasing energy costs. However, the performance of window itself is not sufficiently controllable parameter to control thermal comfort and solar radiation. Therefore, a shading device such as venetian blind is required to control them and thus a variety of studies have been performed thus far. So, the purpose of this study is to improve the performance of blind through the development of blind control algorithm. Method: Among various input variables for the control of venetian blinds, the vertical solar radiation has been selected in this study as the primary input variable and the optimal control algorithm for venetian blinds were developed for each window orientation. Result: The developed optimal control algorithm has a positive effect on building energy savings.
This paper is focused on the effect of indoor temperature rise according to the use of windows and blinds in double skin facade in summer. For the experiment, we set up the mock-up of double skin facede and measuring temperature and solar radiation. Total 7 cases were used for measuring solar transmittance and indoor temperature rise. When the venetian blind was not installed, solar transmittance was 44.5%, and solar transmittance for the case that installed the venetian blind (angle 0) was 22.5%. Cases that opened inner and outdoor windows for ventilation showed lower indoor temperature rise than cases with closed windows. In addition, Case 5 (opened inner and outdoor windows with the venetian blind (angle 0) to reduce solar transmittance) indicated lower indoor temperature rise than Case 3(opened inner and outdoor windows). Consequently, Case 5 which uses inner and outdoor window for ventilation and venetian blind to reduce solar transmittance is the most effective way to reduce indoor temperature rise among all cases tested in this research.
The purpose of this study was to compare heat shading performance of various blind types in summer. 4 types of blinds were employed and the results are summarized as follows: 1) There were significant differences in indoor thermal environment and heat shading performance between different heat shading devices, and functional blinds demonstrated relatively superior heat shading performance. 2) Indoor long wave radiation influx measures were lowest for the coating roll blind (Blind B), followed by the coating venetian blind (Blind C), the venetian blind (Blind A), the roll blind, and not having any blinds at all. 3) Such examination results carry implications to reduce cooling load and enhance the indoor environment.
The determination of the solar and thermal performance of fenestration is required for the evaluation of fenestration energy performance, estimating building load. Presently, there exist several methods for determining the thermal transmission(U-value) and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of fenestration system. These method are commonly grouped under calculation or experimental methods. While U-value testing and calculation methods have been long established, SHGC has been evaluated only by the method of calculation under the lack of any established testing method. However, it is difficult to assess the exact SHGC for various types of fenestration with sun-shading or other solar control systems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of interior venetian blind and roll screen on the SHGC of glazing system. SHGC has been evaluated by the KS L 9107 test method and exiting calculation method for precise comparison of the energy performances of various shading devices. In this research, the test sample consists of three different types of double glazing unit with venetian blind and roll screen. Slat angles of venetian blind were changed to $-45^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and$-45^{\circ}$. For the roll screen, measurements were taken with the roll screen in the closed position. In result, the venetian blind reduced SHGC by 21.2~28.4% at $45^{\circ}$, when compared to the double glazing unit. The roll screen reduced SHGC by 34.4~41.7% at closed. The differences between the measured and calculated SHGC were found to range between 0.001(0.2%) and 0.047(11.1%) for all test cases. For the cases of venetian blind $-45^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$, the deviation ratio were 3.6~9.8%, 1.1~2.6%, 4.2~11.1%, respectively. For the case of roll screen, the deviation ratio were 4.1~5.7%.
Purpose: Glazing and shading devices influence a lot on the thermal and visual environment in office buildings. Solar heat and daylight are contrary concept, therefore proper arrangement of thermal and optical performance is needed when designing a glazing and shading devices. The purpose of this study is to examine the conditions of the glazing and shading devices available for promoting the reduction of cooling loads + lighting loads and the improvement in thermal comfort and visual comfort for the summer season in an office building installed with venetian blind. Method: This study established 12 simulation cases which have different glazings and the positions of venetian blind for evaluating different thermal and optical performance. And by using EnergyPlus v8.1 and Window v7.2 program, we quantitatively analyzed cooling loads + lighting loads, thermal comfort and visual comfort in an office building installed with the glazing and shading devices. Result: Consequently, Case 9(Double Low-E+Exterior Blind) is the best arrangement of solar heat gain and daylight influx, thereby becomes the most excellent case of reducing cooling+lighting loads(46.8%) and simultaneously becomes the enhancement case in thermal comfort. Also, DGI(Daylight glare index) under clear sky conditions in summer was evaluated to be 19.6, and thereby satisfied the recommendation level of allowing visual comfort.
Aims of this study is to investigate the daylighting control strategy of venetian blind system was performed as a function of ratio of shading height to window and slat angles in the preliminary stage of the parametric study. Floor-to-ceiling window walls of living spaces are used widely in apartment buildings since the Korean government has legally allowed elimination of the balcony area. Enlarging living area by balcony elimination, the larger glass area of window is exposed to the direct sunlight. As a common sunlight controlling device, blind system can be used in all orientations and all latitudes and it may obstruct, absorb, reflect and transmit solar radiation to building by proper adjusting. However, blind system can produce discomfort in occupant and less energy efficiency, if it has not been controlled optimally. The simulation model was based on the unit module of typical living space with balcony elimination. The room dimension was $6.0m(w){\times}6.9m(d){\times}2.7m(h)$ with floor to ceiling height of 2.5m. The blind system was simulated at five slat angles (horizontal, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ upward and downward tilted) and the four ratio of shading height to window (fully closed, partly opened, no-blind) using the Desktop RADIANCE 2.0 program. The series of simulation results indicates that the advantages of available daylight and outside of view can be improved by proper adjusting blind system.
The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum slat angle of the venetian blind which was applied at an outer skin of a curtain-wall system. The evaluation of the blind slat angle was performed in terms of the comfortable visual environment and decreased energy consumption. The office building prototype was considered for the analysis and simulation variables include application of blind, blind slat angle and dimming control of lighting. The annual energy consumption and incidence rate of discomfort glare were analyzed using EnergyPlus which is developed by the U. S. Department of Energy for the detailed building energy simulation. As a result, it turns out that when the blind (reflectance: 0.5) was installed, the annual energy consumption was greater than that of the base model. However, when the dimming control was applied, the maximum energy saving of 16.3% could be achieved at a slat angle of $0^{\circ}$. In addition, in case of the base model, the incidence rate of discomfort glare was 84%, while the case of the blind with the slat angle of $0^{\circ}$ showed that the incidence rate of discomfort glare was 42.4%. Consequently, the results showed that the slat angle of $55^{\circ}$ with dimming control was the optimum strategy for the comfortable visual environment and decreased energy consumption.
