This paper deals with the FEM analysis of nonlinear sloshing of incompressible, invicid and irrotational flow in two dimensional rectangular tank. We use laplace equation based on potential theory as governing equation. For large amplitude sloshing motion, kinematic and dynamic free surface conditions derived from Bernoulli equation are applied. This problem is solved by FEM using 9-node elements. For the time integration and accurate velocity calculation, we introduce predictor-corrector time marching scheme and least square method. Also, numerical stability in tracking of free surface is obtained by direct calculation of free surface location to time variation. Numerical results of sloshing induced by harmonic excitations, while comparing with those of linear theory and references, prove the accuracy and stability. After verification of our program, we analyze sloshing response characteristics to the fluid height and the excitation amplitude.

The high-skewed and/or composite propellers of current interests to reduce the ship vibration and to increase the acoustic performance are likely to be exposed to the unexpected structural problems. One typical example is that the added mass effect on the propellers working in the non-uniform wake field reduces the natural frequency of the propeller leading to the resonance with the low-frequency excitation of the external forces. To avoid this resonance problem during the design stage, the technique of fluid-structure interaction has been developed, but the higher-order effect of the blade geometry deformation is not yet considered in evaluating the added mass effects. In this paper the fluid boundary-value problem is formulated by the potential-based panel method in the inviscid fluid region with the velocity inflow due to the body deformation, and the structural response of the solid body under the hydrodynamic loading is solved by applying the finite element method which implements the 20-node iso-parametric element model. The fluid-structure problem is solved iteratively. A basic fluid-sturcture interaction study is performed with the simple rectangular plates of thin thickness with various planform submerged in the water of infinite extent. The computations show good correlation with the experimental results of Linholm, et al. (1965).

In centralized control system, complicated control systems including sensors, power supply and dampers should be required to satisfy the target response of large-scale structures. The practical applications of the centralized control system, however, is very difficult due to high order finite element model of structures, uncertainty of models, and limitations of the excitation system. In this study, the decentralized response-dependent MR damper of which magnetic field is automatically modulated according to the displacement or velocity transferred to the damper without any sensing and computing systems. this decentralized response-dependent MR damper are investigated according to the ranges of relative magnitude between the control force of MR damper and the story shear force of structures by nonlinear time history analysis. Finally, its performance is compared with centralized LQR algorithm which is used in general centralized control theory for a three story building structure.

This work investigates the influence of water compressibility on pressure pulsations induced by rotor-stator interaction (RSI) in hydraulic machinery, using the commercial CFD solver ANSYS-CFX. A pipe flow example with harmonic velocity excitation at the inlet plane is simulated using different grid densities and time step sizes. Results are compared with a validated code for hydraulic networks (SIMSEN). Subsequently, the solution procedure is applied to a simplified 2.5-dimensional pump-turbine configuration in prototype with different speeds of sound as well as in model scale with an adapted speed of sound. Pressure fluctuations are compared with numerical and experimental data based on prototype scale. The good agreement indicates that the scaling of acoustic effects with an adapted speed of sound works well. With respect to pressure fluctuation amplitudes along the centerline of runner channels, incompressible solutions exhibit a linear decrease while compressible solutions exhibit sinusoidal distributions with maximum values at half the channel length, coinciding with analytical solutions of one-dimensional acoustics. Furthermore, in compressible simulation the amplification of pressure fluctuations is observed from the inlet of stay vane channels to the spiral case wall. Finally, the procedure is applied to a three-dimensional pump configuration in model scale with adapted speed of sound. Normalized Pressure fluctuations are compared with results from prototype measurements. Compared to incompressible computations, compressible simulations provide similar pressure fluctuations in vaneless space, but pressure fluctuations in spiral case and penstock may be much higher.

The effect of characteristics of ground and circular foundation on the dynamic behavior of the foundation in vertical motion are considered using an approximated analytical solution and a finite element analysis with absorbing (consistent transmitting) boundary. The shear wave velocity of homogeneous ground affects the resonant frequency of the foundation much but has nothing to do with the maximum response amplitude at resonant frequency. The density in this case affects both the resonant frequency and the maximum response. The size and the mass of the circular foundation are related both to the resonant frequency and the maximum response. However, Poisson's ratio has very little effect on dynamic behavior of the foundation. When the ground is not homogeneous but has the layers, different formations of shear wave velocities would also change the maximum response at resonant frequency.
The photodissociation dynamics of CH2I2 has been studied at 304 nm by state-selective photofragment translational spectroscopy. Velocity distributions, anisotropy parameters, and relative quantum yields are obtained for the ground I(2P3/2) and spin-orbit excited state I*(2P1/2) iodine atoms, which are produced from photodissociation of CH2I2 at this wavelength. These processes are found to occur via B1 ← A1 type electronic transitions. The quantum yield of I*(2P1/2) is determined to be 0.25, indicating that the formation of ground state iodine is clearly the favored dissociation channel in the 304 nm wavelength region. From the angular distribution of dissociation products, the anisotropy parameters are determined to be β(I)=0.4 for the I(2P3/2) and β(I*)=0.55 for the I*(2P1/2) which substantially differ from the limiting value of 1.13. The positive values of anisotropy parameter, however, show that the primary processes for I and I* formation channels proceed dominantly via a transition which is parallel to I-I axis. The above results are interpreted in terms of dual path formation of iodine atoms from two different excited states, i.e., a direct and an indirect dissociation via curve crossing between these states. The translational energy distributions of recoil fragments reveal that a large fraction of the available energy goes into the internal excitation of the CH2I photofragment; < Eint > /Eavl=0.80 and 0.82 for the I and I* formation channels, respectively. The quantitative analysis for the energy partitioning of available energy into the photofragments is used to compare the experimental results with the prediction of direct impulsive model for photodissociation dynamics.

Articulated loading platforms (ALPs) belongs to a class of offshore structures known as compliant. ALP motions have time periods falling in the wind excitation frequency range due to their compliant behaviour. This paper deals with the dynamic behavior of a double hinged ALP subjected to low-frequency wind forces with random waves. Nonlinear effects due to variable submergence, fluctuating buoyancy, variable added mass, and hydrodynamic forces are considered in the analysis. The random sea state is characterized by the Pierson-Moskowitz (P-M) spectrum. The wave forces on the submerged elements of the platform's shaft are calculated using Morison's Equation with Airy's linear wave theory ignoring diffraction effects. The fluctuating wind load has been estimated using Ochi and Shin wind velocity spectrum for offshore structures. The nonlinear dynamic equation of motion is solved in the time domain by the Wilson-θ method. The wind-structure interactions, along with the effect of various other parameters on the platform response, are investigated. The effect of offset of aerodynamic center (A.C.) with the center of gravity (C.G.) of platform superstructure has also been investigated. The outcome of the analyses indicates that low-frequency wind forces affect the response of ALP to a large extent, which otherwise is not enhanced in the presence of only waves. The mean wind modifies the mean position of the platform surge response to the positive side, causing an offset. Various power spectral densities (PSDs) under high and moderate sea states show that apart from the significant peak occurring at the two natural frequencies, other prominent peaks also appear at very low frequencies showing the influence of wind on the response.
We have carried out high-resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic observations toward 16 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) showing strong H2 emission features. A dozen bright H2 emission lines are clearly detected for individual SNRs, and we have measured their central velocities, line widths, and fluxes. For all SNRs except one (G9.9-0.8), the H2 line ratios are well consistent with that of thermal excitation at T~2000 K and their line widths are broader than ~10 km s-1, indicating that the H2 emission lines are most likely from shock-excited gas and therefore that they are physically associated with the remnants. The kinematic distances to the 15 SNRs are derived from the central velocities of the H2 lines using a Galactic rotation model. We derive for the first time the kinematic distances to four SNRs: G13.5-0.2, G16.0-0.5, G32.1-0.9, G33.2-0.6. Among the rest 11 SNRs, the central velocities of the H2 emission lines for six SNRs are well consistent (±5 km s-1) with those obtained in previous radio observations, while for the other five SNRs (G18.1-0.1, G18.9-1.1, Kes 69, 3C 396, W49B), they are significantly different. We discuss the velocity discrepancies in these five SNRs. In G9.9-0.8, the H2 emission shows non-thermal line ratios and very narrow line width (~4 km s-1), and we discuss its origin.

In this paper, we show that the instantaneous phase current of the bifiler-wound hybrid stepping motor is dependent of lead angle and that the information of motor position is obtained from the instantaneous phase current at ${\pi}/2$ by the theoretical formular and its computer simulation results. From the facts, we design the microcontroller-based motor position sensorless controller of optimal lead angle, which generates the excitation pulses for the closed-loop drives. The controller is consist of microcontroller which has the function of A/D converter, programmable input/output timer, and the transfer table which has the values of optimal lead angle depending on motor velocity, and ROM which has the transfer table of the values of lead angle depending on velocity of motor and the values of instantaneous phase current at ${\pi}/2$. From the design of microcontroller-based controller, we minimize the external interface circuit and obtain flexibility by changing the contents of ROM transfer tables and the control software. We confirm that the designed controller drives the bifilar-wound hybrid stepping motor is the mode of optimal lead angle by comparing the instananeous phase current experimental results and computer simulation results.

This paper presents a new vibration control method for long-span bridges using complex damper system. The new system presents simple mechanical configuration with oil and elasto-plastic dampers which have velocity and displacement dependency in vibration energy absorbing. This system can produce various damping forces according to the applied external forces by the velocity and displacement-dependent characteristics of the dampers. The oil damper dissipates vibration energy for relatively frequent and small amplitude like in the case for small to moderate earthquakes, whereas the elasto-plastic damper system works for rare and large amplitude vibration such as high seismic excitation. Thus, the proposed system exhibits the advantage of low cost with high performance since the roles of the two different dampers are effectively separated. A numerical model is established for the complex damper system, and the response characteristics and effectiveness of the proposed system are presented through numerical simulations. Numerical results show that the proposed complex damper system can significantly improve the seismic performance of long-span bridge structures with much more effective damping mechanism than single conventional passive damper systems.
