In the conventional velocity analysis, the peaks of a semblance panel are picked and the stacking velocities of the peaks are assumed as RMS velocities from which interval velocities are determined. This velocity analysis technique is correct only for horizontal homogeneous layes and incurs error in a layer whose velocity varies laterally. Tediousness of peak picking and error in velocity analysis can be reduced by automatic velocity analysis techniques. An automatic velocity analysis algorithm has been presented in order to improve these problems by considering the stacking velocity from the view point of interval velocity model and by relating the stacking velocity and the interval velocity with the traveltimes. In this paper, we apply the automatic velocity analysis method to simple models having lateral velocity anomaly to verify the effectivenesses and limits of this method. From the results of numerical experiments, we can determine the interval velocites without pickings of the stacking velocities in the one-dimensional velocity analysis and the general patterns of the laterally varying interval velocities appear in the two-dimensional case. However, the interval velocity and the depth of velocity anomaly determined by two-dimensional automatic velocity analysis are somewaht discrepant in those of the theoretical model.
The Thomsen-Haskell method was used to determine sensitivities of the Rayleigh-wave phase velocities and spectral amplitude of vertical ground motion to insertion of a single velocity-anomaly layer into overburden underlain by a basement. The reference model comprised a 9-m thick overburden with shear-wave velocity (${\nu}_s$ of 300 m/s above a half-space with ${\nu}_s$ = 1000 m/s. The inserted layer, with a velocity of 150, 225, 375, or 450 m/s and a thickness of 1, 2, or 3 m, was placed at depths increasing from the surface in increments of 1 m. Phase velocities were computed for frequencies of 4 to 30 Hz. For inserted layer models, we placed an anomalous layer with thickness of 1 ~ 3 m, shear-wave velocity of 150 ~ 450 m/s, and at depths of 0 ~ 8 m in the overburden. The frequency range of 8 ~ 20 Hz were the most sensitive to the difference of $C_R$ between the inserted and reference models (${\Delta}C_R$) for h = 1 m and the frequency range got wide as h increased. For all of the models, the spectral amplitudes of the fundamental mode exceeded those of the $1^{st}$-higher mode except at frequencies just above the low-frequency cutoff of the $1^{st}$-higher mode.
The gas hydrate exploration using seismic reflection data, the detection of BSR(Bottom Simulating Reflector) on the seismic section is the most important work flow because the BSR have been interpreted as being formed at the base of a gas hydrate zone. Usually, BSR has some dominant qualitative characteristics on seismic section i.e. Wavelet phase reversal compare to sea bottom signal, Parallel layer with sea bottom, Strong amplitude, Masking phenomenon above the BSR, Cross bedding with other geological layer. Even though a BSR can be selected on seismic section with these guidance, it is not enough to conform as being true BSR. Some other available methods for verifying the BSR with reliable analysis quantitatively i.e. Interval velocity analysis, AVO(Amplitude Variation with Offset)analysis etc. Usually, AVO analysis can be divided by three main parts. The first part is AVO analysis, the second is AVO modeling and the last is AVO inversion. AVO analysis is unique method for detecting the free gas zone on seismic section directly. Therefore it can be a kind of useful analysis method for discriminating true BSR, which might arise from an Possion ratio contrast between high velocity layer, partially hydrated sediment and low velocity layer, water saturated gas sediment. During the AVO interpretation, as the AVO response can be changed depend upon the water saturation ratio, it is confused to discriminate the AVO response of gas layer from dry layer. In that case, the AVO modeling is necessary to generate synthetic seismogram comparing with real data. It can be available to make conclusions from correspondence or lack of correspondence between the two seismograms. AVO inversion process is the method for driving a geological model by iterative operation that the result ing synthetic seismogram matches to real data seismogram wi thin some tolerance level. AVO inversion is a topic of current research and for now there is no general consensus on how the process should be done or even whether is valid for standard seismic data. Unfortunately, there are no well log data acquired from gas hydrate exploration area in Korea. Instead of that data, well log data and seismic data acquired from gas sand area located nearby the gas hydrate exploration area is used to AVO analysis, As the results of AVO modeling, type III AVO anomaly confirmed on the gas sand layer. The Castagna's equation constant value for estimating the S-wave velocity are evaluated as A=0.86190, B=-3845.14431 respectively and water saturation ratio is $50\%$. To calculate the reflection coefficient of synthetic seismogram, the Zoeppritz equation is used. For AVO inversion process, the dataset provided by Hampson-Rushell CO. is used.
A new technique of simultaneous inversion for 3-D seismic velocity structure by using direct, reflected, and refracted waves is applied to the southeast part of the Korean Peninsula including Pohang Basin, Kyongsang Basin and Ryongnam Massif. Pg, Sg, PmP, SmS, Pn, and Sn arrival times of 44 events with 554 seismic rays are inverted for locations and crustal structure. $6{\times}6$ with $0.5^{\circ}$ and 8 layers (4 km each layer) model was inverted. 3-D seismic crustal velocity tomography including eight sections from surface to Moho, ten profiles along latitude and longitude are analyzed. The results are as follows: 1) the average velocity and thickness of sediment are 5.04 km/s and 3-4 km, and the velocity of basement is 6.11 km/s. The shape of velocity in shallower layer is agreement with Bouguer gravity anomaly (Cho et al., 1997). 2) the velocities fluctuate strongly in the upper crust. The velocity distribution of the lower crust under Conrad appears basically horizontal. 3) the average depth of Moho is 30.4 km, and velocity is 8.01 km/s. 4) from the velocity and depth of the sediment, the thickness, velocity and form of the upper crust, and the depth and form of Moho, we can find the obvious differences among Ryongnam Massif, Kyongsang Basin and Pohang Basin. 5) the deep faults (a Ulsan series faults) near Kyongju and Pohang areas can be found to be normal and/or thrust faults with detachment extended to the bottom of the upper crust.
In this study, we apply a three-dimensional circulation model, MOHID (MOdelo $HIDrodin{\hat{a}}mico$), and reproduce oceanic variation around the East Asian seas including Korea in 2016. Simulation results are verified by using objective analysis fields (EN4, ARMOR3D, AVISO, and SIO products) and in-situ observation data (serial oceanographic and buoy data). Verification results show that general characteristics of the water temperature, sea level anomaly, surface velocity, and mixed layer depths simulated by MOHID are similar with those of the objective analysis fields in the East Asian seas. Especially, when buoy data in the coastal areas are compared, correlation coefficients of sea surface temperature and sea level anomaly are both over 0.8 and normalized standard deviations are between 0.85 and 1.15, respectively. However, it is analyzed that additional improvement would be necessary in the representation of thermocline structure in the East Sea and strong stratification phenomena in the Yellow and South Sea in summer.
It has been controversial whether the United States Atlantic margin, which developed during Mesozoic separation of Africa and North America, is a volcanic or non-volcanic rifted margin. To understand its nature, the basement images of multi-channel seismic profiles off the southeastern United States continental margin have been examined. One of prominent results is the presence of seaward-dipping reflector (SDR) wedges, the most diagnostic feature of volcanic rifted margins. Two sets of SDR wedges appear to exist here; one along the basement hinge zone ('the hinge SDR wedge') and another seaward of the East Coast magnetic anomaly ('the outer SDR wedge'). Seaward of the basement hinge zone, the lower crustal high-velocity body previously known as the 7.2 km/s layer and the underlying smooth Moho configuration are also observed. Based on the comparison of these basement images with the crustal structures of the well-known volcanic rifted margin, the southeastern United States Atlantic margin can now be characterized as a typical volcanic rifted margin.

We develop a new high-fidelity multiphysics model to simulate boron chemistry in the porous Chalk River Unidentified Deposit (CRUD) deposits. Heat transfer, capillary flow, solute transport, and chemical reactions are fully coupled. The evaporation of coolant in the deposits is included in governing equations modified by the volume-averaged assumption of wick boiling. The axial offset anomaly (AOA) of the Seabrook nuclear power plant is simulated. The new model reasonably predicts the distributions of temperature, pressure, velocity, volumetric boiling heat density, and chemical concentrations. In the thicker CRUD regions, 60% of the total heat is removed by evaporative heat transfer, causing boron species accumulation. The new model successfully shows the quantitative effect of coolant evaporation on the local distributions of boron. The total amount of boron in the CRUD layer increases by a factor of 1.21 when an evaporation-driven increase of soluble and precipitated boron concentrations is reflected. In addition, the concentrations of B(OH)3 and LiBO2 are estimated according to various conditions such as different CRUD thickness and porosity. At the end of the cycle in the AOA case, the total mass of boron incorporated in CRUD deposits of a reference single fuel rod is estimated to be about 0.5 mg.
Geophysical survey was carried out to derive some information on the existence of near-surface anomalous body at Reung-Chi area in Kongju. Resistivity, seismic, magnetic and gravity method were applied. Geophysical survey that was applied was the electrical resistivity survey, seismic survey, magnetic survey, gravity survey. These surveys are analyzed to provide data of high resolution. As a result of analysis of resistivity survey, anomalies showing high resistivity anomaly than around appeared, and the one showing M-shape out of those explains the possibility that underground common or other underground structure or geographical anomalous zone could exist in the underground. As a result of analysis of seismic survey, it is clear that the low velocity layer is spread as far as the bottom of the underground. It is possible to presume that it is a phenomenon appearing while going through the underground space where it is lying in the underground. Area that shows unusual situation in interpretation of data on seismic waves are included into the area that once showed resistivity anomaly, the results of both seismic surveys come in accord. As a result of magnetic survey, a circle-shape of twin magnetic fields in the area where abnormalities are shown between electrical resistivity survey and seismic survey is appeared. Given the area of gravity survey, abnormalities whose density is different from the one around the bottom of the underground. As a result of analogizing the data of underground of the subsurface based on analysis of data from each survey, it was interpreted that anomalous zone exists commonly in the research areas.
