This study presents the estimation of the entrainment velocity of sediment particles from the scour hole. Sediment particles are entrained from the scour hole downstream of hydraulic structures by the turbulent vortices. Mathematical form of the entrainment velocity of sediment particles from the scour hole was obtained using the impulse-momentum equation with given value of the vertical component of turbulent velocity of the line vortex. Also, its probability density distribution was obtained with the results that the probability density distribution of the vertical turbulent velocity followed the normal distribution. Experimental results of the entrainment velocity of sediment particles showed relatively good agreements with theoretical ones.
In this paper, the eddy current sensor is develped for observing the ability of detecting defect with variation of frequency and velocity. The circuit designed for processing detected voltage and changing frequency is used for eddy current sensor to detect defect with variation of frequency. The ability of eddy current sensor to detect defects is studied with variation of velocity adjusted by rotating the circular plate. This study shows that the ability of eddy current sensor for detecting defect is increased and decreased by frequency. This fact means that the sensor has its best ability at a certain frequency. And the ability of eddy current sensor by velocity is decreased by increased velocity. Therefore, the eddy current sensor has to be developed with consideration of its operation velocity and frequency.
The lift-off characteristics of the triple flame within a diverging duct have been studied experimentally using a multi-slot burner, which can control the concentration gradient and the mean velocity independently. In this experiment the triple flame was stabilized successfully in lift-off condition and flame stabilization with a duct or without a duct, lift-off heights, and some other characteristics were examined for propane flame. It was examined that the effects with various concentration gradient and mean velocity on the triple flame. It was found that minimum value of the lift-off heights exist at a certain concentration gradient for constant mean velocity and flame with a duct is more stable than that without. Moreover the propagation velocity of the flame becomes maximum at a certain concentration gradient regardless of mean velocity.

Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) has been operating Korean Earthquake Monitoring System(KEMS) to archive the real-time data stream and to determine event parameters (epicenter origin time and magnitude)by the automatic processing and analyst review. To do this KEMS uses the Vindel Hue's velocity model which was derived from Wonju KSRS data. Because KIGAM now receives the real-time data from many stations including Wonju KSRS Cholwon seismo-acoustic array Uljin Wolsung Youngkwang Taejon Seoul Kimcheon Taegu etc. the proper velocity model should be established around the Korean peninsula, In this study P were velocity structures was derived from VELEST program using 69 events among the 835 events determined by KEMS in 1999 which were recorded by at least 5 stations. General trend of velocity structure was similar to Sang Jo Kim's model but velocity value was low in crust and high in upper mantle. Due to the sensitivity of inversion results to the initial input model the artificial short and blast data might be added.
A noisy behavior of the time domain passivity controller during the period of low velocity is analyzed. Main reasons of the noisy behavior are investigated through a simulation with a one-DOF (Degree of Freedom) haptic interface model. It is shown that the PO/PC is ineffective in dissipating the produced energy when the sign of the velocity, which is numerically calculated from the measured position, is suddenly changed, and when this velocity is zero. These cases happen during the period of low velocity due to the limited resolution of the position sensor. New methods, ignoring the produced energy from the velocity sign change, and holding the control force while the velocity is zero, are proposed for removing the noisy behavior. The feasibility of the developed methods is proved with both a simulation and a real experiment.
This paper deal with the critical fluid velocity response of nanocomposite pipe conveying fluid based on numerical method. The pressure of fluid is obtained based on perturbation method. The motion equations are derived based on classical shell theory, energy method and Hamilton's principle. The shell is reinforced by nanoparticles and the distribution of them are functionally graded (FG). The mixture rule is applied for obtaining the equivalent material properties of the structure. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is utilized for solution of the motion equations in order to obtain the critical fluid velocity. The effects of different parameters such asCNT nanoparticles volume percent, boundary conditions, thickness to radius ratios, length to radius ratios and internal fluid are presented on the critical fluid velocity response structure. The results show that with increasing the CNT nanoparticles, the critical fluid velocity is increased. In addition, FGX distribution of nanoparticles is the best choice for reinforcement.
Press forming of magnesium alloy sheet is conducted at elevated temperatures to improve the press formability due to its low formability at room temperature. At elevated temperatures, magnesium alloy sheet formability is known to be very sensitive to the strain rate. In this paper, warm deep drawing tests of magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet was conducted under double forming velocity as well as single forming velocity to examine the formability change by forming velocity profile. The observed formability improvement by double forming velocity was analyzed by using the finite element analysis.
An efficient numerical method to solve the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is developed. A fully implicit time advancement is employed to avoid the CFL(Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy) restriction, where the Crank-Nicholson discretization is used for both the diffusion and convection terms. Based on a block LU decomposition, velocity-pressure decoupling is achieved in conjunction with the approximate factorization. Main emphasis is placed on the additional decoupling of the intermediate velocity components with only n th time step velocity The temporal second-order accuracy is Preserved with the approximate factorization without any modification of boundary conditions. Since the decoupled momentum equations are solved without iteration, the computational time is reduced significantly. The present decoupling method is validated by solving the turbulent minimal channel flow unit.
It has been researched the relationship between deposition velocity and factors which could affect the deposition phenomena and deposition velocity also has been estimated fer several land-use types. The typical deposition velocities are complex functions of surface types, atmospheric stabilities, friction velocities, air pollutants and so on. The canopy resistance is major contribution to the model's total resistance for O₃. Canopy wetness is also an important factor to calculate deposition velocity. We considered the canopy wetness as canopy water content(CWC) in our Model. But, it is not easy to observe CWC over each land-use types. In this study, we use CWC observed by EMEFS(CANADA Environment Service, 1988) to examine the influence of CWC in estimation of 03 dry deposition velocity(V/sub d/) in summertime. The value of O₃ V/sub d/ range 0.2 ∼ 0.7 cm s/sup -1/ on dry surface and 0.01 ∼ 0.35 cm s/sup -1/ on wet surface in daytime.
Cylindrical cam mechanisms are used commonly in many automatic machinery. But the cylindrical cam is very difficult to design and manufacture the shape. The motion analysis of the cylindrical cam can check the accuracy between designed data and manufactured data of the cam shape and can reproduce without the cam design data. The motion analysis of the cylindrical cam consists of displacement analysis, velocity analysis and acceleration analysis. This paper performs the motion analysis of a cylindrical cam with translating follower by using a relative velocity method and a central difference method. The displacement is calculated by using the central difference method and the velocity is calculated by the relative velocity method. The relative velocity method is defined by the relative motion between follower and cam at a center of a follower roller. The central difference method is derived in the 3 dimensional space.
