  • In order to evaluate the state of the environmental pollution by vehicle exhaust in Seoul area the correlation between lead in air and leaves of roadside trees has been investigated during August in 1985. The dust in the atmosphere was collected by high volume air sampler to measure the concentration of lead. On the other hand, lead as a pollution indicator was extracted from the leaves of roadside trees (Ginkgo biloba, Salix pseudo/lasiogyne, platanus occidentalis) by conventional method and their concentrations were determined. The following results were obtained : 1. Lead concentrations in the leaves of roadside trees varied with trees, for example, the average concentrations of lead in each of the leaves of Ginkgo biloba, Salix pseudo/lasiogyne and Platanus occidentalis were 20.66 ppm, 9.37 ppm, and 10.58 ppm, respectively. 2. The dust sampled along heavily traveled highways showed that lead content tended to increase with traffic volume. 3. The correlation coefficients between lead correlation in air and leaves of Gingo biloba, Salix pseudo/lasiogyne, and Platanus orientalis were 0.80, 0.85, and 0.87, respectively.

  • Due to the rapid increase of automobiles and daily driving distances, air pollution by automobiles is still dominant problem of large city in spite of strict emission refutation and development of reduction technologies. Among the air pollution resources of automobile , industry. electricity generation and heating. automobile keeps 51% of total nationwide air pollution in 1998 and this proportion Is increasing in large cities from 65% to 85%. To reduce these air pollution. catalytic converter and electronic engine control, exhaust gas re-circulation and evaporative emission control system have continuously developed and applied to automobiles since 1987. Also strong emission standards and emission durability warranty have enforced and monitored annually by sampling several vehicle models. But technologies and regulations are incomplete, driver should participate in reducing air pollution for himself by planning driving, avoiding unnecessary idle and air conditioning, keeping periodic maintenance and using mass transportation.

  • Fast burning achieves higher efficiency, and reduces cycle variations which is able to improve vehicle driveability. Furthermore, the greater resistance to knock with fast burning can allow the fuel economy advantages associated with higher compression ratio to be realized. One way of increasing the combustion speed is to enhance the performance of ignition systems which were able to reduce the early period of combustion. It is well known that shortening the initial stage of combustion also reduces the cyclic variations. This literature survey deals with the papers which have studied the ignition process or various ignition systems. Those systems increasing the combustion speed, extending the lean misfire limit, reducing the exhaust gas and stabilizing the operating condition of the spark ignition engine by modifying the ignition process or increasing ignition energy.

  • Most heater being used in vehicles has been used to a cabin heating by being supplied from a heat loss of the engine coolant for heat source efficiency. Recently, the heat loss is reduced by high efficiency in the engine. It becomes to require the combustion heater that directly bums the heater used in vehicles to provide heat source of the heater. The purpose of this study is to research a burner which will applicate combustion heater by the numerical analysis. There are the 5 different types of burners, which is designed by differently each design of the swirler. N-DODECANE by used the burner fuel is performed by numerical analysis in every 5 burner. The burner's efficiency testing is evaluated on the basis of the Exhaust gas temperature.

  • Performance predictions of the propulsion system were conducted for a 900㎏ class Canard Rotor/Wing vehicle. The main components of the propulsion system are turbojet engine, exhaust ducts and nozzles. The internal flow of the duct was considered as one-dimensional, compressible and viscous flow. Adequate governing equations including centrifugal force effect were applied to the analysis of the duct flows. Results such as available power, available thrust, engine throttle, mass flow rates, rotor RPM and cruise nozzle area were presented for rotary-wing mode and transition mode.

  • In recent truck industry, ride quality improvement as well as payload capacity is a very important subject. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to study several sub-systems (powertrain, suspension, engine mount, exhaust, etc) of truck which are major components of vehicle. In this research, torsional vibration reduction method of 4$\times$2 truck powertrain is demonstrated by using computer simulation and experiment. First, truck powertrain is modeled as a vibration system and validity of developed model is verified by comparing free vibration results with experiment results. Second, Most key parameters which influence torsional resonance are examined utilizing mode analysis. Finally, frequency responses of truck powertrain are obtained and reduction counterplans of torsional vibration are suggested.

  • In this paper, the performance of wet type filter for diesel engine combustion air has been studied with effects of air temperature, humidity, and pressure. After experiments are performed without diesel engine, it has been investigated the applicability to diesel engine. Wet type filter for diesel engine combustion air had advantages that it is not necessary to change air filter and that engine exhaust gas is environmentally friendly due to low NOx and particulate emission. Also, the filtration performance has been carried out with smoke shell.

  • A GAF (generated axial force) is produced at a plunging-type CVJ (constant velocity joint). A high GAF can cause vibrations in a vehicle. Grease is used to reduce friction between the roller and the track of the outer case of a CVJ. The grease performance depends on the surface conditions and operating temperature. The surface of the outer case is extremely rough and hard. In recent times, the maximum operating temperature of CVJs has crossed $140^{\circ}C$, because the exhaust line is now located close to the CVJ. In this study, we examined the friction characteristics of friction additives at $25-150^{\circ}C$ and determined an optimal formulation with a low friction coefficient. This formulation can be used to develop low-friction grease that can reduce the GAF produced at a CVJ by approximately 7-26%.

  • Fine particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 ${\mu}m$ (PM2.5) were collected from three sites in Beijing during April, August, and November 2000 and January 2001. After chemical components in samples are analyzed, a chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model using PARs as tracers is applied to quantify the source contributions to PM2.5 in Beijing. The results show that the major sources are coal combustion, fugitive dust, vehicle exhaust, secondary sulfate and nitrate, and organic matter while biomass burning and construction dust contribute only a small fraction. In addition, source inventory in Beijing is used to determine the primary source contributions. The two methods result in comparable results. Source apportionment at three sampling sites presents similar contributions to PM2.5 although the sites are far away from each other. However, distinct seasonal pattern is presented for the source contributions from coal combustion, fugitive dust, biomass burning, secondary sulfate and nitrate.
