A Gram (-), rod-shaped bacterium in size of 1.6-2.8 $\times$ 0.4 μm was isolated from a eutrophic reservoir, which exhibited growth-inhibiting effect against a bluegreen alga (Anabaena cylindrica). This isolate showed positive reactions for catalase and oxidase, and optimal conditions of 35-40°C and pH 9.0. This isolate was designated AC-1 in this manuscript. In a mixed-culture of A. cylindrica and AC-1, their growth patterns were inversely correlated and the bluegreen algal vegetative cells completely disappeared within 24-36 hours. AC-1 showed similar lytic activity in natural water as in an artificial medium. The lytic activity of AC-1 was dependent on the photosynthetic activity of A. cylindrica. When observed under phase contrast microscope, the isolate lysed vegetative cells of A. cylindrica in scattered state in a liquid medium, whereas heterocysts have not been lysed.
To establish a cultivation method of Petalonia fascia, seeds and seedlings cultures and growth tests were performed at the Daeri aquafarm in Haeui, Shinan, Jeollanamdo, Korea. Gametes were easily released from the mature plurilocular sporangia. They developed to crustose discoidal stolons and grew to filamentous and discoidal stolons. The indoor seeding was performed by using the 100-150 ${\mu}m$long fragments of stolons on Porphyra nets and the erect thalli developed from the cuttings when the seawater temperatures were 10-15$^{\circ}C$. In the experimental cultivation in the sea, 1-2mm long plantlets were found after 15 days of cultivation; after two months thalli grew to their maximal size of 215-355 mm long blades; after three months the length of thalli began to decrease due to distal disintegration and the plant color changed to yellow and epiphytic diatoms were attached on the thalli, which deteriorated the quality of products. The cultivation of P. fascia by the regeneration of filamentous-discoidal complexes was carried out successfully for the first time in Korea.
Planting methods of seeding, seed net, sprig net and sprigging were evaluated for influence on the covering rate and the growth of Phragmites spp. The results were as follows. 1. Covering rate was high within 4 months when propagated by sprig net, seeding and sprigging but became same within 5 months afterwards regardless of Planting methods. 2. Growth of leaf height and width was high on vegetative types of Planting methods such as sprig net and sprigging when compared with on seed types of Planting methods such as seeding and seed net. 3. Sprig net showed good covering rate and growth than sprigging when compared within vegetative types of planting. 4. In this study, sprig net was figured out as the best type of Planting methods than any other types of Planting methods for the restoration of a shore vegetation in a urban stream.
Pyrenophora graminea, the causal agent of leaf stripe disease, is an economically important pathogen of barley found worldwide. Forty-four isolates of diverse geographical origin within Syria were grouped into vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) by demonstrating heterokaryosis by complementation tests using nitrate nonutilizing (nit) mutants. All isolates were grouped into three VCGs-1-A, 1-B and 1-C. No self-incompatibility was observed in any of the isolates tested. VCG 1-A was the most common group within growing regions in Syria and proved to be the most virulent of the VCGs identified. These data indicate that the level of virulence in P. graminea is related to VCG.

Spectral reflectance signatures of upland crops at OSMI bands were collected and evaluated for the feasibility of crop discrimination knowledge-based on crop calendar. Effective bands and their ratio values for discriminating corn from two other legumes were defined with OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values. June 22 among measurements dates was the best date for corn discrimination from two other legumes, peanut and soybean, because all OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values in June 22 were highly significant for corn separability. Phenological growth stage of a silage corn (rs510) could be estimated as a function of spectral reflectance signatures in vegetative stage. Five growth stage prediction models were generated by the SAS procedures REG and STEPWISE with OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values in vegetative stage.
Survival and heat resistance of Listeria monocytogenes Scott A in various nutritional environments and cell type on stainless steel were determined. Viable cell of L. monocytogenes Scott A was most rapidly decreased in phosphate buffer among various media such as NSM (30 g TSB/1 l D.W.), LNM (2 g TSB/1 l D.W.) and phosphate buffer (pH=7) during incubation at 21 and 35C but survived for 15 days at 21C. Vegetative and starved L. monocytogenes Scott A were survived after heat treatment for 5 min at 65C while not detected at 72C.
The pattern of RNA synthesis during male gametogenesis of Brassica napus was studied using 3H-uridine autoradiography. No incorporation of isotope occurred in the newly released microspore and the nonvacuolate, furrowed microspore. Peak incorporation of label during male gametogenesis occurred in the uninucleate, furrowed microspores showing various degrees of vacuolation. In this microspore stage, silver grains were localized in the nucleus and cytoplasm. Moderate incorporation of the isotope occurred in the nulceus of the vacuolated microspore. After the microspore mitosis, isotope incorporation occurred predominantly in the nucleus of the vegetative cell with little or no incorporation in the generative cell. In tricellular pollen, no incorporation of isotope was observed in both the vegetative nucleus and the sperms. Silver grains almost completely disappeared from tricellular mature pollen grains ready to germinate.
Attempts were made in order to make clear the meiotic irregularities, male gametophyte formation and spermatogenesis for the purpose of applying these embryological facts to taxonomic works. Followings are the results obtained : 1. Meiosis is extremely irregular, giving rise to giant, micro, and empty, pollens. Meiotic division in each PMC is observed synchronizing. 2. In the microspore immediately before the vegetative-generative nuclear division, the nucleus locates appressed to the inner wall, most of the other part of the cell being occupied by large vacuoles. 3. Spindle symmetry in the microspore nuclear division is of intermediate type. 4. Nuclear divisions in each micropore are not synchronized as in meiosis. 5. Generative nucleus is located in close contact with the inner wall, while the vegetative nucleus occupies the central part of pollen grain. The pollen in this stage looks somewhat like broad bean. Afterward the generative nucleus loses contact with the wall, the nuclear shape changing from lenticular to roundsh. 6. The generative nucleus in fully matured pollen grain usually takes the shape of crescence, those in abortive pollen, lenticular or ellipsoidal, etc.
Temperature response of amoebae of thermotactic mutants have been investigated. Amoebae of the mutant strain HO 428 showed positive thermotaxs which is strong at lower temperaturs and drops sharply above the growth temperature of amoebae. The temperature response of HO 428 amoebae was not affected by the length of amoebae on the grdients. HO 596 amoebae seemed to have both positive and negative thermotactic responses shortly after food depletion. Longer exposure of these amoebae on the thermal gradients induced a stronger negative response at lower temperatures and an apparent positive response at higher temperatures. A similar changes could be observed in HO 1445 amoebae. Based on the steady positive thermotactic response by HO 428 amoebae and the mode of change in termperature response at higher temperatures, 24$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, by HO 596 amoebae, a model for the temperature response of vegetative Dictyostelium discoideum amoebae, strain HL 50, has been proposed. The main features of the model are: a positive response at the thermal gradients with midpoint temperatures lower than the growth temperatures of amoebae and a negative response above it.
