  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although a lot of effort has been put into increasing fruit and vegetable intakes in preschool children, vegetable intake in this group is still low. This study investigated whether nutrition education focusing on fruit and vegetable intakes can affect preschoolers' fruit and vegetable intakes as well as their behavioral outcomes. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Thirty-five preschoolers (54.3% boys, n = 19) aged 4-6 years residing in Seoul underwent weekly nutrition education intervention (8 sessions) between May and July 2016. Intakes of fruits and vegetables were measured during pre and post-intervention. At snack time, fresh fruit (150 g) and vegetable (120 g) snacks were distributed to each child by teachers. The remaining portions of the snacks were weighed and recorded for each child. Behavioral outcomes were measured by applying Child behavior checklist 1.5-5 and the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. RESULTS: During post intervention, vegetable intake increased from $36.15{\pm}30.64g$ to $48.01{\pm}31.23g$ (P = 0.010). Among the emotional and behavioral problems measured by parents, levels of total problems (P = 0.001), internalizing (P = 0.004), externalizing (P = 0.003), anxiety and depression (P = 0.001), and aggressive behavior (P = 0.005) decreased. Anxiety (P = 0.026) score, as measured by teachers, also decreased. CONCLUSIONS: Nutrition education of preschoolers regarding the intakes of fruits and vegetables had a positive effect on preschoolers' vegetable intake as well as on their emotional and behavioral outcomes. A long-term, large-scale study with a broader study design is warranted to further investigate the role of fruit and vegetable intake in cognitive development and behavior of preschoolers.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the vegetable eating behaviors and preferences of elementary school students by stage of change for vegetable intake. The subjects consisted of 191 fourth and fifth grade elementary school students from Gyeonggi province. The stage of change for vegetable intake was categorized into three groups: precontemplation (PC, 18.4%), preparation (P, 43.5%), and action/maintenance (A&M, 48.2%). The trend to eat a variety of foods was more distinctive as the students went from the PC to the A&M stage. The stage of change for vegetable intake was closely related with the kimchi-eating pattern of the students. The A&M group ate more vegetables than the PC group because they liked vegetables and/or wanted to prevent disease. The PC group had a lower tendency to follow recommendations for vegetable eating than the P and A&M groups. The PC group also had an incorrect notion that low vegetable consumption over an extended time would not have a big impact on their health. The vegetables of high preference for the elementary school students were potato, sweet potato, lettuce, radish, perilla leaf, cucumber, and cabbage. The vegetables of low preference were spinach, onion, balloon flower, and green pepper. The PC group had lower preferences for most vegetables than the P and A&M groups. Therefore, careful nutrition education is necessary especially for students in the PC group in order to explain the positive effects of vegetable intake and negative effects of an unbalanced diet. It is also necessary to survey students' tastes consistently and to develop recipes that encourage them to consume more vegetables agreeably.

  • Objectives: The main objective of this study is to investigate domestic usage amount of insecticide for vegetable cultivation to provide fundamental data for establishing job-exposure matrix(JEM) related to farmers treating agricultural insecticide. Materials and Methods: The survey on domestic usage amount of insecticide for vegetable cultivation was conducted by two research methods. The first method is to utilize agricultural pesticides published annually from Korea Crop Protection Association(KCPA). The second method is to apply cultivation area of vegetable announced officially from Statistics Korea(SK). An estimation of domestic usage amount of insecticide for vegetable cultivation through the second method was done by multiplying total cultivation area of vegetable($m^2$) with optimal spray amount of insecticide for vegetable cultivation per unit cultivation area of vegetable ($kg/m^2$). Results: As a result of analysis of public data related to insecticide for vegetable cultivation, it was found that its domestic usage amount has decreased gradually from the first sale year(1969) to current year(2012). There is, however, a considerable difference of annual usage trend of insecticide for vegetable cultivation between shipments and estimation. The annual usage trends of insecticide for vegetable cultivation based on regional classification were different from those based on total aspect. Conclusions: The region which used insecticide for vegetable cultivation the most in Korea was Jeolla-do, followed by Gyeonsang-do, Chungcheong-do, Seoul/Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do and Jeju-do. Substantially, mean ratio of usage amounts of insecticide based on shipments and those based on estimation by cultivation area was $281{\pm}115%$, which indicates that usage amounts of insecticide estimated by cultivation area are three times lower than those based on shipments.

  • In past, transformer connection study was concentrated on efficiency improvement and life time broadening. But environmental side began to become important recently. In existing, quick transaction of mineral oil used to insulation oil of transformer is possibility to be difficult and causes environmental pollution in case of was outpoured and there is worry of fire occurrence. Accordingly, nonflammable performance becomes many interest in excellent vegetable oil because ignition point is high than mineral oil and environment friendly material. But, vegetable oil is cooling of transformer and insulation problem of insulating paper for cause of insulation oil special quality. Therefore, in this paper, special quality of vegetable oil that there are being a lot of mineral oil and the latest interest examined about problem and consideration item to be solved to analyzed comparison and applies vegetable oil to transformer for electric power.

  • The streaming electrification process of vegetable insulating oils occurring when the oils contacted with solid material in a high power transformer circulation system seems to cause electrical discharge incidents and may cause failures. We therefore measured the dielectric breakdown voltage tendency of vegetable insulating oils flowing on the surface of the charging device with various velocity and temperature. First, the relation between the velocity and breakdown voltage tendency of vegetable oils, can be explained by volume effect and v-t effect. Second, experimental results show that applied voltage have little effect on dielectric breakdown voltage, when vegetable insulating oils used for large power transformer.

  • Vegetable oil and its derivatives as an alternative diesel fuel have become more attractive recently because of its environmental benefits and the fact that they are made from renewable resources. Viscosity is the most significant property to affect the utilization of vegetable oil and its derivatives in the compression ignition engines. This paper presents the existing correlations for predicting the viscosity of vegetable oil and its derivatives for compression ignition engines. According to the parameter considered in the correlations, the empirical correlations can be divided into six groups: correlations as a function of temperature, of proportion, of composition, of temperature and composition, of temperature and proportion, and of fuel properties. Out of physical properties of fuel, there exist in the literature several parameters for giving the influence on kinematic viscosity such as density, specific gravity, the ratio of iodine value over the saponification value, higher heating value, flash point and pressure. The study for the verification of applicability of existing correlations to non-edible vegetable oil and its derivatives is required.

  • Exhaust emissions in diesel engine are affected by fuel properties, but the reason for this is not clear. Especially, the recent strong interest in using low-grade fuel such as used vegetable oil as alternative diesel fuel demands extensive investigation in order to clarify the exhaust emissions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a used vegetable oil as an alternative fuel in a diesel engine in terms of exhaust emissions. The emission concentration of used vegetable oil such as formaldehyde and acrolein is two times than that of diesel fuel. However, since that of alcohol is ten times than that of used vegetable oil and that concentration is very low, it is not a problem for human health.

  • Generally, the vegetable oil contains glycerin esther and free fatty acid. When the vegetable oil reacts with concrete, the glycerin esther from oil induces saponification by reacting with and hydrolyzing calcium hydroxide from cement hydration. As a result of this saponification, it has been reported the expansion of concrete. although the free fatty acid from vegetable oil, as an acid, can decompose the concrete by producing soluble salt from calcium hydroxide or CSH, the hydration products of cement, there was no report on the harmful oil type for concrete. therefore, in this research, the property change of cement mortar incorporating fly ash was analyzed experimentally by immerging various types of vegetable oils.
