This paper proposes an efficient feature vector processing technique to guard the Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) system against a variety of noises. In the proposed approach, emotional feature vectors are extracted from speech processed by comb filtering. Then, these extracts are used in a robust model construction based on feature vector classification. We modify conventional comb filtering by using speech presence probability to minimize drawbacks due to incorrect pitch estimation under background noise conditions. The modified comb filtering can correctly enhance the harmonics, which is an important factor used in SER. Feature vector classification technique categorizes feature vectors into either discriminative vectors or non-discriminative vectors based on a log-likelihood criterion. This method can successfully select the discriminative vectors while preserving correct emotional characteristics. Thus, robust emotion models can be constructed by only using such discriminative vectors. On SER experiment using an emotional speech corpus contaminated by various noises, our approach exhibited superior performance to the baseline system.
The classification and recognition of two-dimensional trademark patterns independently of their position, orientation, size and scale by proposing two feature vectors has been discussed. The paper presents experimentation on two feature vectors showing size- invariance and scale-invariance respectively. Both feature vectors are equally invariant to rotation as well. The feature extraction is based on local as well as global statistics of the image. These feature vectors have appealing mathematical simplicity and are versatile. The results so far have shown the best performance of the developed system based on these unique sets of feature. The goal has been achieved by segmenting the image using connected-component (nearest neighbours) algorithm. Second part of this work considers the possibility of using back propagation neural networks (BPN) for the learning and matching tasks, by simply feeding the feature vectosr. The effectiveness of the proposed feature vectors is tested with various trademarks, not used in learning phase.
This research proposes a new strategy where documents are encoded into string vectors and modified version of KNN to be adaptable to string vectors for text categorization. Traditionally, when KNN are used for pattern classification, raw data should be encoded into numerical vectors. This encoding may be difficult, depending on a given application area of pattern classification. For example, in text categorization, encoding full texts given as raw data into numerical vectors leads to two main problems: huge dimensionality and sparse distribution. In this research, we encode full texts into string vectors, and modify the supervised learning algorithms adaptable to string vectors for text categorization.

Wind profiler provides vertical profiles of three-dimensional wind vectors with high spatiotemporal resolution. The wind vectors is useful to analyze severe weather phenomena and to validate the various products from numerical weather prediction model. However, the wind measurements are not immune to ground clutter, bird, insect, and aircraft. Therefore, quality of wind vectors from wind profiler must be quantitatively evaluated prior to its application. In this study, wind vectors from UHF wind profiler at Ganwon Regional Meteorological Administration was quantitatively evaluated using 27 radiosonde measurements that were launched every two or three hours according to rainfall intensity during Intensive Observation Period (IOP) from June to July 2013. In comparison between two measurements, wind vectors from wind profiler was relatively underestimated. In addition, the accuracy and quality of wind vectors from wind profiler decrease with increasing beam height. The accuracy and quality of the wind vectors for rainy periods during IOP were higher than for the clear-air measurements. The moderate rainfall intensity lead to multi-peaks in Doppler spectrum. It results in overestimation of vertical air motion, whereas wind vectors from wind profilers shows good agreement with those from radiosonde measurements for light rainfall intensity.
Using the Lorenz-95 simple model, which can simulate many atmospheric characteristics, we compare the performance of ensemble strategies such as bred vectors, the bred vectors rotated (to be orthogonal to each bred member), and the Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (ETKF). The performance metrics used are the RMSE of ensemble means, the ratio of RMS error of ensemble mean to the spread of ensemble, rank histograms to see if the ensemble member can well represent the true probability density function (pdf), and the distribution of eigen-values of the forecast ensemble, which can provide useful information on the independence of each member. In the meantime, the orthogonal bred vectors can achieve the considerable progress comparing the bred vectors in all aspects of RMSE, spread, and independence of members. When we rotate the bred vectors for orthogonalization, the improvement rate for the spread of ensemble is almost as double as that for RMS error of ensemble mean compared to the non-rotated bred vectors on a simple model. It appears that the result is consistent with the tentative test on the operational model in KMA. In conclusion, ETKF is superior to the other two methods in all terms of the assesment ways we used when it comes to ensemble prediction. But we cannot decide which perturbation strategy is better in aspect of the structure of the background error covariance. It appears that further studies on the best perturbation way for hybrid variational data assimilation to consider an error-of-the-day(EOTD) should be needed.

True motion estimation is necessary for deinterlacing, frame-rate conversion, and film judder compensation. There have been several block-based approaches to find true motion vectors by tracing minimum sum-of-absolute-difference (SAD) values by considering spatial and temporal consistency. However, the algorithms cannot find robust motion vectors when the texture of objects is changed. To find the robust motion vectors in the region, a recursive vector selection scheme and an adaptive weighting parameter are proposed. Previous frame vectors are recursively averaged to be utilized for motion error region. The weighting parameter controls fidelity to input vectors and the recursively averaged ones, where the input vectors come from the conventional estimators. If the input vectors are not reliable, then the mean vectors of the previous frame are used for temporal consistency. Experimental results show more robust motion vectors than those of the conventional methods in time-varying texture objects.
In this paper, we propose an approach for extracting and filtering block motion vectors using an adaptive weight function. We first extract motion vectors from a sequence of images by using size-varibale block matching and then process them by adaptive robust estimation to filter out outliers (motion vectors out of concern). The proposed adaptive robust estimation defines a continuous sigmoid weight function. It then adaptively tunes the sigmoid function to its hard-limit as the residual errors between the model and input data are decreased, so that we can effectively separate non-outliers (motion vectors of concern) from outliers with the finally tuned hard-limit of the weight function. The experimental results show that the suggested approach is very effective in filtering block motion vectors.
The basic concept underlying gene therapy is that human diseases may be treated by the transfer of genetics material into specific cells of a patient in order to correct or supplement defective genes responsible for disease development. There are several systems that can be used to transfer foreign genetic material into the human body. Both viral and non-viral vectors are developed and evaluated for delivering therapeutic genes. Viral vectors are biological systems derived from naturally evolved viruses capable of transferring their genetics materials into host cells. However, the limitations associated with viral vectors, in terms of their safety, particularly immunogenecity, and their limited capacity of transgenic materials, have encouraged researchers to increasingly focus on non-viral vectors as an alternative to viral vectors. Although non-viral vectors are less efficient than viral ones, they have the advantages of safety, simplicity of preparation and high gene encapsulation capability. This article reviews the most recent studies highlighting the advantages and the limitation of gene delivery systems focused on non-viral systems compared to viral systems.
Given vectors x and y in a Hilbert space, an interpolating operator is a bounded operator T such that Tx = y. An interpolating operator for n vectors satisfies the equation $Tx_i=y_i$ , for i, = 1,2,…,n. In this article, we investigate compact interpolation problems in tridiagonal algebra : Given vectors x and y in a Hilbert space, when is there a compact operator A in a tridiagonal algebra such that Ax = y?
We consider inertial navigation system (INS) sensor redundancy and propose a method which uses singular value decomposition to detect and isolate faults when even two sensors have faults simultaneously. When redundant sensor configuration is given, such as symmetric configuration in INS, the range space and null space of configuration matrix are determined. We use null space of configuration matrix and define 21 reference fault vectors which include 6 one-fault vectors and 15 two-fault vectors. Measurements are projected into null space of measurement matrix and compared with 21 normalized reference fault vectors, which determines fault detection and isolation.
