  • Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in various applications, including electric vehicles and portable electronics, due to their high energy density and long cycle life. The performance of lithium-ion batteries can be improved by using solid electrolytes, in terms of higher safety, stability, and energy density. Li1.5Al0.5Ti1.5(PO4)3 (LATP) is a promising solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium batteries due to its high ionic conductivity and excellent stability. However, the ionic conductivity of LATP needs to be improved for commercializing all-solid-state lithium battery systems. In this study, we investigate the microstructures and ionic conductivities of LATP by incorporating B2O3 glass ceramics. The smaller grain size and narrow size distribution were obtained after the introduction of B2O3 in LATP, which is attributed to the B2O3 glass on grain boundaries of LATP. Moreover, higher ionic conductivity can be obtained after B2O3 incorporation, where the optimal composition is 0.1 wt% B2O3 incorporated LATP and the ionic conductivity reaches 8.8×10-5 S/cm, more than 3 times higher value than pristine LATP. More research could be followed for having higher ionic conductivity and density by optimizing the processing conditions. This facile approach for establishing higher ionic conductivity in LATP solid electrolytes could accelerate the commercialization of all-solid-state lithium batteries.

  • Food waste (FW) emissions in South Korea amounted to 4.77 million tons in 2021, and continue to increase. Various technologies have been developed to treat FW, with recent research focusing on biochar production through pyrolysis to reduce FW. However, the agricultural application of food waste-biochar (FWBC) is limited by the salt accumulated during pyrolysis. This study investigated salt removal from and the kinetic characteristics of FWBC, and subsequently evaluated its agricultural applications. FW was pyrolyzed at 350℃ for 4 h, and subsequently washed for 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 5, 15, and 30 min to remove salt. FWBC had a salt concentration of 5.75%, which was effectively removed through washing. The salt concentration decreased rapidly at the beginning (1 min) and then slowly decreased, unlike in FW, in which the salt decreased continuously and slowly. The salt removal speed constant (K) was 1.5586 (Stage 1, FWBC) > 0.0445 (Stage 2, FWBC) > 0.0026 (FW). In a lettuce cultivation experiment, higher biomass was achieved using washed FWBC than when using unwashed FWBC and FW, and soil properties were improved. Overall, these findings suggest that although FW reduction using pyrolysis causes a salt accumulation problem, the salt can be effectively removed through washing. The use of washed FWBC can enhance plant growth and soil properties.

  • The biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite (HAP) has led to its application in various fields. To accomplish practical biological applications, such as drug/gene delivery, the colloidal stability of HAP in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) is particularly important. In this study, we prepared a glycerol incorporated-HAP (Gly-HAP) by heating HAP in a glycerol environment at 200 ℃. To compare morphology and colloidal stability, HAP prepared at room temperature (RT-HAP) was thermally treated in water at 200 ℃ (H2O-HAP). The heat treatment of HAP in both water and glycerol solutions results in an increase in the crystallinity of HAPs. Due to the low solubility of HAP in glycerol and the adsorption of glycerol on the HAP surface, crystal growth is limited. However, the heat-treated HAP under water increased in size by approximately four times compared to the initial crystallites. Compared to RT-HAP and H2O-HAP, Gly-HAP shows improved colloidal stability in PBS, which originates from the adsorption of glycerol on the HAP surface that inhibits the agglomeration of individual HAP precipitates.

  • Recently, Deep learning analysis of unstructured text data using language models, such as Google's BERT and OpenAI's GPT has shown remarkable results in various applications. Most language models are used to learn generalized linguistic information from pre-training data and then update their weights for downstream tasks through a fine-tuning process. However, some concerns have been raised that privacy may be violated in the process of using these language models, i.e., data privacy may be violated when data owner provides large amounts of data to the model owner to perform fine-tuning of the language model. Conversely, when the model owner discloses the entire model to the data owner, the structure and weights of the model are disclosed, which may violate the privacy of the model. The concept of offsite tuning has been recently proposed to perform fine-tuning of language models while protecting privacy in such situations. But the study has a limitation that it does not provide a concrete way to apply the proposed methodology to text classification models. In this study, we propose a concrete method to apply offsite tuning with an additional classifier to protect the privacy of the model and data when performing multi-classification fine-tuning on Korean documents. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, we conducted experiments on about 200,000 Korean documents from five major fields, ICT, electrical, electronic, mechanical, and medical, provided by AIHub, and found that the proposed plug-in model outperforms the zero-shot model and the offsite model in terms of classification accuracy.

  • Light Emitting Diodes(LEDs) are widely utilized not only in lighting but also in various applications such as mobile phones, automobiles, displays, etc. The integration of LED lighting with communication, specifically Visible Light Communication(VLC), has gained significant attention. This paper presents the direct implementation and experimentation of a Vehicle-to-Vehicle(V2V) Visible Light Communication system using commonly used red and yellow LEDs in typical vehicles. Data collected from the leading vehicle, including positional and speed information, were modulated using Non-Return-to-Zero On-Off Keying(NRZ-OOK) and transmitted through the rear lights equipped with red and yellow LEDs. A photodetector(PD) received the visible light signals, demodulated the data, and restored it. To mitigate the interference from fluorescent lights and natural light, a PD for interference removal was installed, and an interference removal device using a polarizing filter and a differential amplifier was employed. The performance of the proposed visible light communication system was analyzed in an ideal case, indoors and outdoors environments. In an outdoor setting, maintaining a distance of approximately 30[cm], and a transmission rate of 4800[bps] for inter-vehicle data transmission, the red LED exhibited a performance improvement of approximately 13.63[dB], while the yellow LED showed an improvement of about 11.9[dB].

  • This paper investigates the naval application of laser communication as a potential replacement for traditional acoustic wave communication in underwater environments. We developed a laser transceiver using Arduino and MATLAB, conducting a water tank experiment to validate communication feasibility across diverse underwater conditions. In the first experiment, when transmitting data through a laser, the desired message was converted into data and transmitted, received, and confirmed to be converted into the correct message. In the second experiment, the operation of communication in underwater situations was confirmed, and in the third experiment, the intensity of light was measured using the CDS illuminance sensor module and the limits of laser communication were measured and confirmed in various underwater situations. Additionally, MATLAB code was employed to gather data on salinity, water temperature, and water depth for calculating turbidity. Optimal wavelength values (532nm, 633nm, 785nm, 1064nm) corresponding to calculated turbidity levels (5, 20, 55, 180) were determined and presented. The study then focuses on analyzing potential applications in naval tactical communication, remote sensing, and underwater drone control. Finally, we propose measures for overcoming current technological limitations and enhancing performance.

  • This study aimed to develop a precise vegetation cover classification model for small streams using the combination of drone remote sensing and support vector machine (SVM) techniques. The chosen study area was the Idong stream, nestled within Geosan-gun, Chunbuk, South Korea. The initial stage involved image acquisition through a fixed-wing drone named ebee. This drone carried two sensors: the S.O.D.A visible camera for capturing detailed visuals and the Sequoia+ multispectral sensor for gathering rich spectral data. The survey meticulously captured the stream's features on August 18, 2023. Leveraging the multispectral images, a range of vegetation indices were calculated. These included the widely used normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) that factors in soil background, and the normalized difference water index (NDWI) for identifying water bodies. The third stage saw the development of an SVM model based on the calculated vegetation indices. The RBF kernel was chosen as the SVM algorithm, and optimal values for the cost (C) and gamma hyperparameters were determined. The results are as follows: (a) High-Resolution Imaging: The drone-based image acquisition delivered results, providing high-resolution images (1 cm/pixel) of the Idong stream. These detailed visuals effectively captured the stream's morphology, including its width, variations in the streambed, and the intricate vegetation cover patterns adorning the stream banks and bed. (b) Vegetation Insights through Indices: The calculated vegetation indices revealed distinct spatial patterns in vegetation cover and moisture content. NDVI emerged as the strongest indicator of vegetation cover, while SAVI and NDWI provided insights into moisture variations. (c) Accurate Classification with SVM: The SVM model, fueled by the combination of NDVI, SAVI, and NDWI, achieved an outstanding accuracy of 0.903, which was calculated based on the confusion matrix. This performance translated to precise classification of vegetation, soil, and water within the stream area. The study's findings demonstrate the effectiveness of drone remote sensing and SVM techniques in developing accurate vegetation cover classification models for small streams. These models hold immense potential for various applications, including stream monitoring, informed management practices, and effective stream restoration efforts. By incorporating images and additional details about the specific drone and sensors technology, we can gain a deeper understanding of small streams and develop effective strategies for stream protection and management.

  • Amphiphilic gold nanoparticles, synthesized by the simultaneous binding of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ligands on their surfaces, find diverse applications in energy, bio, optical, electronic technologies, and various other fields. Particularly, these amphiphilic gold nanoparticles possess both hydrophilic and hydrophobic characteristics, enabling them to activate interface at the interface of immiscible fluids and form organized structures. The surface properties of gold nanoparticles play a crucial role in influencing the behaviors of amphiphilic gold nanoparticles at the interface of two fluids. Therefore, this study investigated the adsorption behaviors of gold nanoparticles at the organic solvent-water interface based on the surface characteristics of amphiphilic gold nanoparticles and the type of organic solvents. It was observed that the amount of adsorbed gold nanoparticles at the interface increased with the length of hydrocarbon chains in hydrophobic ligands and increased with shorter hydrocarbon chains in the organic solvent. Furthermore, using the Langmuir isotherm model, the study confirmed the formation of a monolayer by amphiphilic gold nanoparticles and obtained significant thermodynamic parameters simultaneously.

  • Recently, the establishment of a hydrogen-based economy and the utilization of low-carbon energy sources, particularly for shipping and power generation, have been in high demand in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In particular, ammonia is gaining renewed attention because it is capable of serving as a key facilitator for high-efficiency green hydrogen storage and transportation and it is also capable of serving as a low-carbon energy source. Although ammonia can be synthesized through the Haber-Bosch process, the high energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with this process result in minimal carbon reduction. To address the critical drawbacks of the traditional Haber-Bosch process, various thermochemical synthesis methods have been developed recently, allowing for the synthesis of ammonia with lower carbon emissions and a higher energy efficiency. Research is also progressing in the development of high-performance catalyst materials that are capable of demonstrating sufficient ammonia synthesis performance under milder process conditions compared to conventional methods. Additionally, a variety of different processes such as chemical-looping ammonia synthesis, plasma synthesis, and mechanochemical synthesis are being applied diversely. This review aims to provide a detailed overview of the emerging ammonia synthesis technologies that have been developed to effectively store green hydrogen for future applications.
