The response of seventy-five rice cultivars to ozone (O$_3$) were tested in the open-top chamber with ozone producing and monitoring system to determine the varietal difference of resistance to $O_3$ stress. Ozone was produced by electrostatic discharge in oxygen and was monitored by UV absorption ozone analyzer. Difference in response of rice to ozone was more clearly appeared on rice plants treated for 2 to 4 hours at 0.3 ppm concentration of $O_3$. Varietal resistance of rice to ozone was more distinctly classified at 21- to 35-day seedlings compared with 14-day rice plants. Most of indica and Tongil(indica$\times$japonica) type rice cultivars were more resistant than that of japonica cultivars based on the leaf injury to $O_3$. Eight Korean cultivars belong to japonica groups showed highly resistant reaction to $O_3$. Ozone exposure during booting stage caused lower grain fertility than exposures during seedling, maximum tillering and heading stages of rice.

The pbjective of this study to clarify the varietal resistance to green leaf-and planthopper and the evaluate the nature of the resistance to the insects in connection with the Antibiosis. this study was investigated the reaction of the varieties to insects with 46 rice varieties including recommended varieties of korea, At seedling stage they were in fested with second of third inster nymphs. the results were as follows. 1. Most of the rice vari eties tested showed highly susceptible reaction to Brown planthopper except Mudgo, KR 108-143- and HR529-41-3-2 as resistance, and Akamoch, Satominori, IR 24 and IR 8 asmoderately suscptible. 2. In the test of varietal resistance to white backed planthopper Mudgo, KR 108-243-1, KR 109-154-2 and HR 529-45-3-2 were resistance, and Suweon 82, Tongil, IR 8 palkeum, Iri 309, Hokwang and Chuhoku #31 were Moderatly susceptible. 3. Most of the varieties tested were observed highly resistance to green leafhopper, but Tongil, Suweon 82, IR 24, Milsung and Chuhoku #31 were Moderatly susceptible. 4. the new bred lines HR 108-243-1 are multiple resistance of Brown planthopper, green leafhopper and white babked planthopper, and some others showed moderatly susceptible as. IR 8: Brown planthopper, white backed planthopper. IR 24: Brown poanthopper, green leafhopper. Tongil: suweon #82, Chukoku #31, whist backed planthopper, Green leafhopper.
The inheritance and varietal differences of resistance to bacterial leaf blight caused by Xanthomonas oryzae in rice were studied. Among eighteen cultivars used, 'IR2061-465-1-5-5', 'IR2061-552-6-9', 'IR 1561-228-9-3', ana 'Milyang42, were found to have a high level of resistance to the three isolates of X. oryzae at maximum tillering and flowering stage. Varietal differences in lesion development of the cultivars belonging to the same varietal group were clearly recognized. For the genetic study on bacterial leaf blight resistance, two rice breeding lines 'IR2061-465-1-5-5', 'IR1561-228-3-3' were crossed with susceptible cultivar 'Milyang 23'. The $F_1,F_2,\;and\;F_3$ progenies were evaluated at flowering stage using the bacterial isolate 'JN 7853'(II). Average lesion length of the $F_1$ plants of the crosses showed longer than that of resistant parents, and the frequency distribution of lesion length in the $F_2\;and\;F_3$ populations showed continuous variation.
To obtain a basic information of breeding for resistance to clubroot in Chinese cabbage, disease incidence, pathogenicity, and varietal response to the pathogen were studied. Incidence of clubroot was observed at 3 districts in Gyeonggi-Do, 2 districts in Kangwon-Do, and 1 district each in Gyeongnam, Geongbuk and Jeonbuk, respectively. Disease infection rate and diseased ara were most severe in northern part of Gyeonggi-Do. The isolates of clubroot collected from 8 different districts were not different in their virulence one another in view of their infection rate and disease severity in Chinese cabbage. The clubroot fungus had a wide host range for the cruciferous vegetables. Disease severity was high in rape, turnip and mustard, moderate in Chinese cabbage and broccoli, and low in kale and cauliflower. All of Korean hybrids of Chinese cabbage tested were highly susceptible to clubroot, but Japanese varieties were resistant to the highly pathogenic isolate (EJ-93) which was isolated from the Chinese cabbage in Korea. The hybrid(F1) between clubroot resistant line(930WG) and the susceptible line(332MS) showed completely resistant reaction, which indicated that clubroot resistance was governed by a dominant gene.
Fifty eight isolates of R. solani collected from rice plants infected to sheath blight disease at seven different locations through the country were evaluated for their cultural characteristics on media. Degree of resistance of nine rice varieties were tested by the seven isolates representing each culture type from the grouped pathogene-city. Great variation of cultural characterisics on PSA media was observed among isolates, and 58 isolates tested were grouped into 7 culture types. Locational distribution of isolates belong to each culture type was different between types, and only isolate type 'Ia' was distributed in all locations collected. The degree of pathogene-city of each isolate to rice adult plant was different between 7 culture types grouped, and no isolates infected severely on all tester rice varieties. The degree of resistance to the disease showed great variation among 9 tester varieties, and varietal reaction to the disease was varied along with isolates inoculated. An isolate, la, shown strong pathogenecity and distributed through 7 locations was selected for the screening of varietal resistance to rice sheath blight disease.
The study has been carried to confirm pathogenesity among the isolates which obtained from leaf blight type symptoms and Kresek type symptoms, and also to observe varietal resistance among 29 varieties and/or lines through the introduction of two different pathotypes, of Xanthomonas oryzae, by the use of root clipping and pin prick methods. There was no significant differences among the isolates when their growth in plant tissue were compared. There was certain tendency, however, that the isolates from Kreseked plants showed longer lesion than those from blight type lesions. Both isolates from blight type and Kresek type induced the same degree of Kresek syptoms when they were introduced into plants by root cutting in the suspension prior to transplant. Varietal resistance to 'Kresek' appeared to be the same with those on leaf blight type though Wase Aikoku group varieties showed Kresek symptoms which is not the case with leaf blight type. IR 20 in Kogyoku group varieties showed highly resistant reaction to Kresek type. Root clipping method induced the more of Kresek than those by pin pricking method.
One hundred rice varieties were tested for their level of resistance to sheath blight disease at adult plant stage in field condition through 1984 to 1986. Rice plants were grown under ordinary seasonal culture and inoculated by k-2 fungus isolate during three years. k -1 isolate was also inoculated separately in 1984 and test under late seasonal culture was conducted in separate field in 1985. Degree of damage by the disease observed at 25 days after heading was used to identify the level of resistance of the rice varieties tested. Varietal differences of degree of damage were significant in five tests during three years, and the genotypic variance of degree of damage was always higher than environmental variance among varieties tested. Positive correlations between testing years, between cultural seasons, and between isolates inoculated were found in degree of damage of varieties tested for two or three years continuously. Degree of damage by the disease was correlated negatively with heading date of rice varieties except 1984 tests. Thus, the level of resistance should be compared among the variety group having almost same heading date in field condition, and late and extremely late variety groups should be tested for their level of resistance under appropriate environmental condition. Gayabyo, an early heading variety, and SR9713-54-3, a medium heading breeding line, showed consistent lower value of degree of damage during two or three years. These two varieties were selected as moderate resistant germplasm.

The screening method of varietal resistance on the plant hoppers has generally been evaluated as a reaction of plant after infesting insects. However, feeding amount of insects to the varieties was investigated in this experiment. The new method using isotope $^{32}P$ for rice varietal resistance to plant hoppers was carried out through the following method. Insects tested were caged for a few hours on the plants which had absorbed $^{32}P$ solution in small vials for $24\~48\;hours$. After feeding, insects were killed in the refrigerator with formalin solution, and then were measured by the feeding amount as a count per minute (CPM) with the G.M. Counter. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The apparatus of Type D(Fig. 2) was most effective and the safest among four others. 2. The optimum amount of $H_3PO_4$ solution was found to be $2\~3m1$. 3. Radioactivity of $0.7\mu\;Ci.\;^{32}P$ was sufficient to check varietal difference of feeding amount by the brown planthopper. 4. Radioisotope was found from the body of insects but not in the cuticular layer nymphs cast off.
