  • Fifty rice varieties were tested for alkali digestibility of milled rice grain at four different KOH levels, and twenty-four varieties selected were tested again for alkali digestibility at different degrading times and KOH levels. Gelatinization rate at several heating times and heating temperatures, and water absorption rate at 21$^{\circ}C$ and 77$^{\circ}C$ water temperatures were observed using rice samples of twenty-four varieties to clarify the relationship between alkali digestibility response, gelatinization rate and water absorption rate. Varietal difference of ADV in Japonica and Tongil tye rices was biggest at KOH 1.2%, but it was better to test at KOH 1.2% and 1.4% levels to know the exact alkali digestibility response of rice varieties. Rice varieties tested could be classified into three groups, low, intermediate and high, based on their alkali digestibility response at four KOH levels, and most of Korean cultivated rice varieties were belonged to intermediate or high ADV group. Varietal variation was also found in alkali degrading response at different soaking times in alkali solution. Low ADV varietal group showed higher gelatinization temperature and needed longer heating time for complete gelatinization compared with intermediate or high ADV group. Same trends was found between intermediate and high ADV groups, but varietal variation in the same ADV group was also found in gelatinization temperature and heating time needed for complete gelatinization of rice grain. Water absorption rate of low ADV group was lower than intermediate or high ADV group both at 21$^{\circ}C$ and 77$^{\circ}C$ water temperatures, and intermediate ADV group showed lower absorption rate than high ADV group only in initial water absorption stage at 21$^{\circ}C$.

  • The results of the investigation on the relationship between the varietal difference of photosynthesis capacity and carbohydrate metabolism and the susceptibility to sudden wilting are as follow: 1. Yushin and Milyang 23, varieties in which sudden wilting occurs easily, showed that the photosynthesis capacity at the young panicle formation stage and the contents of chlorophyll of the flag leaf were lower than Jinhung which did not show sudden wilting. 2. Respiration consumption index (${\frac{amount\;of\;respiration}{amount\;of\;assimilation}{\time}100$) of Yushin and Milyang 23 were higher than Jinhung's. 3. Regarding sugar contents of each internode at the ripening stage, the contents of the second and third internodes of Yushin were lower than Jinhung, but no varietal difference was found in the 1st internode. 4. The starch content of the Yushin node sharply decreased compared with Jinhung at the ripening stage. In Jinhung it was especially higher in lowerinternodes, but in the third internode of Yushin. was not more than 50% of that in higher internode's.

  • This study was conducted to find out the suitable NaCl concentration and temperature for investigating the varietal difference of salinity tolerance in Italian ryegrass. Seeds of 20 cultivars including 9 diploid and 11 tetraploid were exposed to eight levels of NaCl concentration ranging from 0 to 350mM under three temperature levels of 15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$. The NaCl concentration(C50%) inhibited germination of 50% of the viable seeds for the cultivars at 15$^{\circ}C$ was 354mM, and those at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ were 342mM and 325mM, respectively. There were significant correlations among C50% at three levels of temperature, and correlation coefficient for C50% between 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$ was higher than that between $25^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$ or 2$0^{\circ}C$. C50% was positively correlated only with germination speed at 10 days after sowing when the plants were exposed to 350mM NaCl at 2$0^{\circ}C$. For the germination speed at 10 days after sowing in 350mM NaCl at 2$0^{\circ}C$, the cultivars used could be classified into three groups. Wase Aoba, Bettina, E. K -11, Tetrone, Lira Sand, Tetra Florum and Billiken belonged to the tolerant group, and Tuchi Was, Wase Yutaka, Sakura Wase, Magnolia, Limella and Delita were as the semi-susceptible group, and Atalja, Barmultra, Ajax, Liberta, LM-16, Elving and Wilo were as the susceptible group.

  • Varietal difference in seed shape and size, water absorption rate, and soybean sprouts was compared. In general, soybean seeds of yellow seed-coat and spherical shape with 100 seeds of 9.0$\pm$2g were evaluated as the best ones; Pungsannamulkong out of tested varieties was considered to be the best one in these respect. Varietal difference in water absorption yale depending on the soaking duration and temperature was recognized; Jungeri and Jillin 3 showed higher water absorption rate at higher temperature but it was completely vice versa for Pungsannamulkong. It took about 15 hours(soaking at 2$0^{\circ}C$) for seed shape of size to grow to 10mm in length. Maximum enlargement in thickness of soybean seeds was made right after the completion of repeated soaking-drying treatment but three hours and nine hours soaking were needed for one time-soaking and non-soaking treatment, respectively. Varietal difference in germination rate was recognized between one hour's soaking at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and two hour's soaking at 15$^{\circ}C$ The growth rate for Jillin 3 was excellent at all soaking methods and temperatures while three hours of soaking was the best for Jungeril and Pungsannamulkong, regardless of soaking temperatures. The growth of hypocotyl length showed somewhat faster in repeated soaking-drying than one time-soaking and non-soaking while the increase of hypocotyl thicknes was better in one-time soaking than repeated soaking-drying.

  • This study was conducted to know how low temperature response of rice varieties is available for breeding lines adapted to cold weather. Some agronomic characters related to cold tolerance were evaluated for 188 varieties including three varietal types of Japonica, Tongil, and Indica. Cold tolerance of Japonica and Indica type varieties varied in leaf discoloration, heading delay, reduction of culm length, panicle number, spikelet number, panicle exsertion, spikelet fertility, and phenotypic acceptability at maturity, while Tongil type varieties were susceptible in most agronomic characters. In leaf discoloration, most Japonica type varieties were highly tolerant, while Indica type varieties showed various responses from tolerant to susceptibility. Not significant difference among three varietal types was observed on reduction of panicle number and spikelet number due to low temperature.

  • To investigate varietal differences of anther size, pollen shape, pollen fertility and other agronomic characters under low temperature condition. twenty rice varieties (5 Tongil and 15 Japonica type) were treated at 19$^{\circ}C$ water temperature from booting to heading stage. There was varietal difference of low temperature response which was indicated by the delayed heading, the shortening of culm and panicle length. and the decrease of grain fertility and yield potential resulted from cooling treatment at booting stage. The varieties with low fertility damaged by the low temperature treatment at booting stage showed low pollen density per anther. small or abnormal anthers and pollen, and many sterile pollens. Anther length was correlated significantly with the number of pollens per anther and pollen fertility.

  • Gel consistency data collected from various experiments in same location during 1988 to 1992 were analysed to clarify the degree of varietal and environmental variation in rice. Most of japonica and Tongil-type rice varieties were belonged to soft gel consistency, and average gel length of japonica rice was longer than that of Tongil-type varieties. Gel length of glutinous rice cultivars was extremely long, near 100mm. Year variation of gel consistency was recognized, but did not affect on varietal difference. Gel consistency of most rice varieties and pedigree lines tested varied slightly between different seeding dates or nitrogen levels, but gel length of two indica rice varieties were decreased with the later seeding dates or the higher nitrogen levels. Rice varieties belonged to extremely hard or extremely soft gel consistency showed less variation of gel length between different years, seeding dates or nitrogen levels compared with intermediate ones.

  • Sixteen Korean leading barley varieties were tested on the sixtieth day after harvest, in order to investigate differences for germinative traits related, and on the eightieth day to test optimum water level for germination test. The germinative energy(GE) and capacity(GC) in the 4.5cc water level were the highest individually. Varietal variations among GE, GC, promptness index(PI) and water sensitivity(WS) were highly significant in storage conditions and water levels. Correlation coefficient estimated were positive among GE, GC, PI, but negative between these traits and WS. Also the varietal difference of WS gets higher with the following order of malting barley<naked barley<covered barley. Heritabilities of broad sense for GE, GC, PI and WS were high, therefore, these traits could be considered in malting barley breeding.

  • This experiment were conducted to elucidate the damage by viviparity during grain filling on grain quality and hulling recovery and to understand the varietal differences of viviparity and the effect of extractive from rice hull of hardly viviparous varieties on seed germination and seedling growth. Ten rice cultivars, such as three indica, four japonica and three Tongil-type rices, were used in this study. The brown rice yield was decreased along with increasing the artificial viviparous treatment periods. At six days after treatment, brown rice yield of Daeseongbyeo was reduce 20% as compared with control. The ratio of head rice was 41.3% at six days after viviparous treatment with $25^{\circ}C$ temperature and over 95% relative humidity, while it was 99.5% in control. Varietal differences of viviparity in three rice groups were ranged from 1.1 to 5.2% in indica rices, 9.2 to 79.7% in japonica rices and 2.1 to 63.7% in Tongil-type rices. Methanol extractives from rice hull of IR36, Shinunbongbyeo and Jungwonbyeo inhibited significantly the germination of Deaseongbyeo.
