The effect of the oceanic condition on variations of the catches of Alaska pollack (Theragra chalcogramma) in the East Sea (the Japan Sea) is examined using monthly catches data of this fish and temperature data during 1972 to 1991. Since 1973 the catches of Alaska pollack have gradually increased, showing a peak in 1981, and then rapidly decreased after 1986. A significant negative correlation was found between variations of the catches and the temperature at 50 m depth offshore Mukho. In 1981, the year of the highest catches in the study period, the water mass in the Eastern Korean Coastal Sea of the East Sea was extremely cold, while the year of poor catch, 1979, was much warmer than the annual mean temperature. The results show that the temperature variations around the Eastern Korean Coastal Sea play an important role in the variations of the catches of Alaska pollack, implying that the effect of the Tsushima Warm Current is also very important.
A numerical procedure is described for estimating the effects of the multi-directional irregular waves on the motion responses and tension variations of the ISSC-TLP. The numerical approach is based on a three-dimensional source distribution method and a spectral analysis technique of directional waves. The spectral description for the linear system of ISSC-TLP in the frequency domain is sufficient to completely define the motion responses and tension variations. This is because both the wave inputs and responses are stationary Gaussian random processes, of which the statistical properties in the amplitude domain are well known. The numerical results for the linear motion responses and tension variations in regular waves are compared with the experimental and numerical ones, which are obtained in the literature. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.
In many astrophysical systems, smooth large-scale variations coexist with small-scale fluctuations. For example, a large-scale velocity or density gradient can exist in molecular clouds that have small-scale fluctuations by turbulence. In redshifted 21cm observations, we also have two types of signals - the Galactic foreground emissions that change smoothly and the redshifted 21cm signals that fluctuate fast in frequency space. In many cases, the large-scale variations make it difficult to extract information on small-scale fluctuations. We propose a simple technique to remove smooth large-scale variations. Our technique relies on multi-point structure functions and can obtain the magnitudes of small-scale fluctuations. It can also be used to design filters that can remove large-scale variations and retrieve small-scale data. We discuss how to apply our technique to irregularly spaced data, such as rotation measure observations toward extragalactic radio point sources.
One-dimensional numerical model is implemented to investigate temperature variations in the mixed layer depth (MLD) with the passage of typhoons. In the model, we assume a non-divergent, infinite ocean and consider wind effects only, excluding isostatic effects (inverse barometric effects) and upwelling with vertical movement of the water column. Numerical experiments investigate the effects of typhoon tracks on temperature variations, including their dependence on vertical resolutions in the MLD and these results are compared with those in a three-dimensional primitive equation model (POM). The model reproduces features of the observed temperature variations in the MLD fairly well, and implies that wind effects, rather than isostatic effects, play a predominant role in temporal and spatial temperature variations in the MLD. After the passage of typhoons, however, the model does not reproduce well the temperature variations observed in the MLD, because a limitation of the model is its inability to reproduce events such as cyclonic eddy formation (Hong et al., 2011; Masuda and Hong, 2011). The model also shows well the so called 'rightward bias' (Price, 1981) of sea surface cooling which is the most predominant in the right hand side of typhoon's track.
The objectives of this study are two-fold : to identify geographic variations in the rate of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) and appendectomy and analyze the socioeconomic variables and health resources which affect geographic variation in the rate. The nationwide three month's cases of the two surgical procedures in 1991 are obtained from the record of the National Federation of Medical Insurance. The analysis shows two to ten-fold variations in the regional rates for the performance of two common procedures such as T&A and appendectomy. T&A shows a bigger regional variations than appendectomy. As a result of multiple regression, the factor of bed supply has been found significant for the dependent variable of the rate of T&A. The finding of large variations in the rate of surgical procedures throughout the country would have important implications for allocating scarce resources and managing quality of care. Further analysis is needed for the elaboration of the above implications.

In this study, structural variations and overlay errors caused by multiple patterning lithography techniques to print narrow parallel metal interconnects are investigated. Resistance and capacitance parasitic of the six lines of parallel interconnects printed by double patterning lithography (DPL) and triple patterning lithography (TPL) are extracted from a field solver. Wide parameter variations both in DPL and TPL processes are analyzed to determine the impact on signal propagation. Simulations of 10% parameter variations in metal lines show delay variations up to 20% and 30% in DPL and TPL, respectively. Monte Carlo statistical analysis shows that the TPL process results in 21% larger standard variation in delay than the DPL process. Crosstalk simulations are conducted to analyze the dependency on the conditions of the neighboring wires. As expected, opposite signal transitions in the neighboring wires significantly degrade the speed of signal propagation, and the impact becomes larger in the C-worst metals patterned by the TPL process compared to those patterned by the DPL process. As a result, both DPL and TPL result in large variations in parasitic and delay. Therefore, an accurate understanding of variations in the interconnect parameters by multiple patterning lithography and adding proper margins in the circuit designs is necessary.
Examining the precipitation data collected during the period from 1960 to 1993, we found that Taegu Station represents an optimum station for explaining the interannual variations of the precipitation in Korea. Using the variations derived from Taegu, the secular trends of the precipitation in Korea have been studied. It was 삽so found that the interannual variations of summer monsoon precipitation are consistent with those of the annual precipitation. To explore the interannual variations of the summer monsoon precipitation, comparisons of the summer precipitation in Korea with that in China and Japan were made. The results of the empirical orthogonal function analysis showed that Korea, the Yangtze River and Huaihe River valley, and the south Japan are all located in the same climate system during summer. The detailed analysis was carried out on the comparison of the summer precipitation in Korea with that in the eastern part of the the mainland China. We found that the correlation pattern is similar to the East Asia/pacific pattern. The probable effects of the sea surface temperature on the precipitation in Korea were also discussed. Key Words : Precipitation in Korea, rainy seasons in East Asia, monsoon precipitation, interannual variations.

Sea level variations and sea surface circulations in the Korean seas were observed by Topex/Poseidon altimeter data from 1993 through 1997. In sea level variations, the West and South Sea showed relatively high variations with comparison to the East Sea. Then, the northern and southern area in the West Sea showed the range of 20∼30cm and 18∼24cm, and the northern west of Jeju island and the southern west of Tsushima island in the South Sea showed the range of 15∼20cm and 10∼15cm, respectively. High variations in the West Sea were results to the inflow in sea surface of Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) and bottom topography. Sea level variations in the South Sea were due to two branch currents (Jeju Warm Current and East Korea Warm Current) originated from Kuroshio Current (KC). In sea surface circulations, there existed remarkably three eddies circulations in the East Sea that are mainly connected with North Korea Cold Current (NKCC), East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) and Tushima Warm Current (TWC). Their eddies are caused basically to the influence of currents in sea surface circulations; Cyclone (0.03 cm/see) in the Wonsan bay off shore with NKCC, and anticyclone (0.06 cm/see) in the southwestern area of Ulleung island with EKWC, and cyclone (0.01 cm/see) in the northeastern area of Tushima island with TWC, respectively.

Tidal variations of various chemical constituents in the laver bed sea waters in Wan Do Gun were determined over one spring tidal cycle from Oct. 1968 to Feb. 1969. Total ranges and means of the contents at Pyung-il Do and Wan Do are as follows. Although the average monthly variations of each content at Pyung-il Do were similar to those at Wan Do, most of the contents at Pyung-il Do were at a slightly higher level than at Wan Do. The values of silicate-silicon, phosphate- phosphorus and soluble iron, however, showed high levels at Wan Do. Chlorinity, magnesium, calcium, dissolved oxygen, silicate-silicon and phosphate-phosphorus contents increased from Oct. 1968 to Feb. 1969, though the content of soluble iron decreased before December and slightly increased in January and February. The average monthly variations of ammonia-nitrogen and nitrate-nitrogen contents were irregular. The nitrite-nitrogen content appeared in trace amounts in the months with a comparatively high water temperature, i.e., October and November, but in midwinter it was undetected. The ranges of the tidal variations of the contents of each chemical constituent were not significantly wide, though the contents varied excessively by the hour, and this may show the irregularity of the water quality in Wan Do Gun coastal area. As a rule, no regular tidal variation of the chlorinity was observed except slightly decreased value at ebb tide at Wan Do. In general, although the pattern of the variations of calcium and magnesium contents were similar to that of the chlorinity, no definite relationships between these constituents and chlorinity were observed. Tidal variations of the dissolved oxygen content, nutrient salts and soluble iron were irregular.
