  • The deformation behaviors under uniaxial compressive cyclic loading were investigated for fresh rocks and freeze-thaw cycled samples. The Pocheon granite which is one of the most popular building stone in Korea was selected for tests. 0.5 Hz and 50% of dynamic strength were used as test conditions for frequency and fatigue span, respectively. For freezethaw procedure, sample were frozen for 3 hours under the temperature of -2$0^{\circ}C$ and then followed 3 hours thawing under the temperature of +2$0^{\circ}C$. Twenty seven samples were used as untreated and seventy three for freeze-thaw samples. No failure occurred up to 15000 cycles at the stress level of 60% of dynamic strength, indicating that the lowest strees level for fatigue failure may be around 60% of dynamic strength. Permanent strain and damping capacity curves show that there were three stages when rock behaves like under creep. Young's moduli were increased and Possion's ratios were decreased with the increase of the number of cycles. Possion's ratios varied more rapidly than Young's moduli did with the increase of the number of cycles. This may represent that most microcracks developed by fatigue stress are parallel to the axis of loading. The deformation behavior of freeze-thaw cycled samples were almost the same as that of untreated samples. However, the result of freeze-thaw cycled samples showed lower regression constant, indicating that the physical durability of rock is much lowered because of cyclic temperature variation.

  • The offshore plant structure has been transported to the site by barge because it is hard to manufacture in site. When the structure was transported on the sea, offshore plant structures and connection were experienced repetitive submarine load. For this reason, it was known for that the axial force of high-strength bolted connection was declined. Therefore, in this study, high-strength bolted connection was evaluated the shear fatigue performance under longtime fatigue load during marine transport. The experimental variables were selected intial axial force, surface type, and bolt type because they ar important factors in the change of axial force of bolts. As a experimental results of considering various variables, the variation of axial force showed within 1%. Therefore, the high-strength bolted connection was verified structural safety under longtime fatigue load.

  • Effects of patenting temperature on bending fatigue resistance of pearlitic steel filaments were investigated experimentally. The fatigue resistance of steel filaments was carried out by using hunter machine, specially designed for ultra fine-sized steel wires, in the controlled conditions. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used for observing the overall microstructure. It revealed that the fatigue resistance as well as tensile strength increased together with increase of patenting temperature from 510 to $600^{\circ}C$, while the endurance ratio ($\sigma_e/\sigma_{TS}$) of filaments decreased. It is believed that this variation of mechanical properties with change of patenting temperature should be strongly influenced by the change of microstructure. The bending fatigue properties of steel filaments were discussed based on microstructural parameters.

  • Fatigue properties of INVAR/AW wires have been investigated under the heat exposure in order to ensure stable operation and to estimate life span of their power line. In the case of heat exposure for 10000 hr, fatigue life and limit increased. For further heat exposure, fatigue limit decreased due to the decrease in yield strength. The variation fatigue of strand wire was strongly dependent on its amplitude. Also, cracks in wires of 7 strands were caused by stress concentration at the outer surface and fretting between each wire during vibration.

  • Recently, with the high performance and efficiency of machine, there have been required the multi-functions in various machine parts, such as the heat resistance, the abrasion resistance and the stress resistance as well as the strength. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out to investigate the fatigue characteristics of high carbon steel (SM53C) experienced by high-frequency induction treatment. The influence of high-frequency induction treatment on fatigue limit was experimentally examined with the specialfocus on the variation of surface microstructure and the fatigue crack initiation and propagation through fractography. Also, the shape of hardening depth, hardened structure, hardness, and fatigue-fracture characteristics of SM53C composed by carbon steel are also investigated.

  • According to previous research, welding-induced stress in steel structures can significantly affect the fatigue behaviour; it produces initial damage of weldiug part of structure locally and residual stresses reduce the fatigue strength after welding precess. In this study, through continuum damage mechanics, we can estimate the weldiug damage using the stress and strain history during welding process and the effect of welding residual stress for assessment of fatigue life. The variation of welding-induced stresses and strains need be traced precisely in advance for a reliable weldiug damage assessment. In this study, a damage and fatigue analysis techniques for steel structures with welding-induced residual stress are presented. First, We calculate the history of temperature according with welding process. And residual stress with a welding thermal history was evaluated by non-linear thermal stress analysis. Secondly, welding damage and fatigue life are estimated with kinetic damage law.

  • In order to analyze feasibility of replacing a conventional 6-mm Ti bar with a 5-mm bar, a series of rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out on Ti-6Al-4V bars by strengthening the fatigue performance using a special technique called UNSM (Ultrasonic Nanocrystal Surface Modification). The results of S-N curves clearly showed that the performance of the 5-mm titanium specimen was similar to that of the 6-mm specimen when the UNSM treatment was applied. The 5-mm treated specimen converged with small scattering band into the linear line of the non-treated 6-mm one. Below the fatigue life of $10^5$ cycles, the UNSM treatment did not show any significant superiority in the bending stress and fatigue life. However, over the fatigue life of $10^5$ cycles, the effect of UNSM was superior for each fatigue life, and the bending stress became longer and higher than that of the untreated one. In the case of 6-mm Ti-bar with UNSM, the fatigue limit was about 592 MPa, and there was fatigue strength increase of about 30.7% at the fatigue life of $10^4$ cycles compared to the untreated 6-mm bar. Therefore, the compressive residual stress made by the UNSM in Ti-6Al-4V increased the fatigue strength by more than 30%.

  • This paper was composed with fatigue test of the cruciform specimens, as load carrying and non-load carrying type. It also has performed computational analyses for geometric condition of the fillet welding bead. As test results, the effect of stress ratio in the specimen was insignificant. Stress ranges were varied with R=0.1~0.2. The fatigue cracks that were found in the load carrying type specimens and most specimens welded with contact were developed at the end of welds. The fatigue strength of specimen that have fractured in maternal plate was found about ${\Delta}\sigma_c$=63.5MPa. It's about 24% less than that of the non-load carrying type specimens having about ${\Delta}\sigma_c$=83.8MPa. A category of the Fatigue design specifications which provide for cruciform details was defined grade C as a stress of the maternal member. And then, the fatigue strength to be transformed into the maternal stress was found about 78.27 MPa, it tends to be less than that of allowable fatigue strength.

  • The influence of monogalvanized layer to fatigue strength of two different mating metal specimens (HS*GA, HS*GAB) of high strength steels(HS) and of monogalvanized steel sheets(GA, GAB) were investigated under tensile-shear repeated load, and hardness test. Some of the results are; (1) The main cause of crack initiation and growth at high load range is plastic bending hinge. (2) In low load range, the cracks initiated near the nugget front where the hardness variation is steep.

  • The fatigue and tensile test were carried out with Mild steel using the Dump Frame of commercial car. The specimens were heat-treated at $810^{\circ}C$ and $930^{\circ}C$ and worked 4.5, 6.0, 8.0mm thickness in order to look over the mechanical properties and fatigue life by heat treatment and thickness from the tensile test result, the yield strength of the heat treated specimens was increased about 35% more than that of the non-heat treated specimen. The fatigue life of non-heated specimen was decreased 15% but that of heat treated specimens at $870^{\circ}C$ and $930^{\circ}C$ were decreased 16.38% and 13.16% respectably according to increasing the thickness from 4.5 to 8.0mm.
