  • December 2009 was one of the quietest (monthly Ap=2) months over the last eight decades. It provided an excellent opportunity to study the day-to-day variability of the F2 layer with the smallest contribution due to geomagnetic activity. With this aim, we analyze hourly values of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2) recorded at 18 ionosonde stations during the magnetically quietest (Ap=0) days of the month. The foF2 variability is quantified as the relative standard deviation of foF2 about the mean of all the "zero-Ap" days of December 2009. This case study may contribute to a more clear vision of the F2-layer variability caused by sources not linked to geomagnetic activity. In accord with previous studies, we find that there is considerable "zero-Ap" variability of foF2 all over the world. At most locations, foF2 variability is presumably affected by the passage of the solar terminator. The patterns of foF2 variability are different at different stations. Possible causes of the observed diurnal foF2 variability may be related to "meteorological" disturbances transmitted from the lower atmosphere or/and effects of the intrinsic turbulence of the ionosphere-atmosphere system.

  • In order to provide information for proper management of groundwater resources, an analysis of the effects of precipitation and groundwater withdrawal on groundwater levels is needed. In this study, we analyzed the correlation of precipitation-groundwater level and groundwater withdrawal-groundwater level using time series data converted by normalized standard deviation (Nor.St.Dev) and cross correlation coefficient (CCC) for nine groundwater monitoring wells in the middle mountainous area in the southeastern Jeju Island. First, the CCCs of precipitation-groundwater level were estimated using daily time series data, and the low CCCs of up to 0.3 were obtained. However, the result of using the Nor.St.Dev showed a clearer correlation by obtaining a CCC of up to 0.8. In addition, in most cases, precipitation variability and groundwater level variability had positive CCCs, whereas groundwater withdrawal variability and groundwater level variability had negative CCCs. Therefore, the groundwater level in this study area was largely influenced by precipitation with little effect of groundwater withdrawal. Lastly, as a result of analyzing the relative effects of Seongpanak and Gyorae rainfall station on the groundwater level, the rainfall at the relatively downstream Gyorae rainfall station has more influence. The analysis method used in this study can be easily used for analyzing the effects of precipitation and groundwater withdrawal on groundwater level variability in other regions in the future.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine alternating motion rate and its variability in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) compared to typically developing children. Six children with CAS aged 9-12 years old and 10 children who were age-matched participated in the study. This study measured tokens per second and variabilities of the rates during the production of /$p^*$ a/, /$t^*$ a/, and /$k^*$ a/. For variability measures of the rates, each participant was asked to repeat speech tasks three times and the average value of the rates and its standard deviation were obtained. The results revealed that the CAS group showed slower rate only at /$k^*$ a/ than the control group. The CAS group exhibited greater variability of AMR at all the tasks than the control group. The results suggested that variability of AMR might be a more distinctive speech feature to children with CAS than the rate of the speech task.

  • This study is to analyze the variability of floating marine debris(FMD) on the Kuroshio Current Area(KCA). A sighting survey was conducted from July 5th to July 16th, 2013 while navigating on KCA from Keelung, Taiwan to Tokyo, Japan using T/V KAYA of Pukyong National University. The sampled zones were divided into 6 transects and observed FMD during daytime in each transect. And also specified with 56 segments by defined one hour tracking distance as one segment on the survey routes. The results are as follows: 1. Hourly deviation of FMD's quality in each transect goes up to 10 times at NT, HS and SK. The others 3 times or so. 2. During the surveys, the largest amounts of it were found as total mean of $31.0num(ea)/km^2$ at NT transect in the northern part of Taiwan. So it is estimated because this area has gotten out of KCA. 3. And also quality of it on KCA was not directly related to Kuroshio Current's strong or weak. In conclusion, For the more detailed results on KCA are required of much more surveys.

  • This study examined the relationship between the MBTI character types and heart rate variability. The subjects were 25 students in the department of emergency medical technology in C city, Chungnam, Korea. The heart rate variability was measured under two conditions: a stable state, and in the second week and fourth week in clinical practice. The period of the heart rate variability measurements was from Jun. 21, 2013 to Jul. 26, 2013.The changes in the HRV at the stable state and during clinical practice depending on the MBTI character types, and the HRV at the stable state and during clinical practice according to the distribution chart of four character types showed a significant difference in the nHF and standard deviation of all R-R intervals (SDNN). In the changes in the HRV at the stable state and during clinical practice depending on the preference distribution chart of each indicator, the T-F group and J-P group in the nLF, T-F group and J-P group in the nHF, S-N group in the standard deviation of all R-R intervals (SDNN) and the J-P group in the mHR showed a significant difference.

  • Stem diameter variability is an essential inventory result that provides useful information in forest management decisions. Little has been done to explore the modelling potentials of standard deviation (SDD) and coefficient of variation (CVD) of diameter at breast height (dbh). This study, therefore, was aimed at developing and testing models for predicting SDD and CVD in stands of Pinus caribaea Morelet (pine) in south west Nigeria. Sixty temporary sample plots of size $20m{\times}20m$, ranging between 15 and 37 years were sampled, covering the entire range of pine in south west Nigeria. The dbh (cm), total and merchantable heights (m), number of stems and age of trees were measured within each plot. Basal area ($m^2$), site index (m), relative spacing and percentile positions of dbh at $24^{th}$, $63^{rd}$, $76^{th}$ and $93^{rd}$ (i.e. $P_{24}$, $P_{63}$, $P_{76}$ and $P_{93}$) were computed from measured variables for each plot. Linear mixed model (LMM) was used to test the effects of locations (fixed) and plots (random). Six candidate models (3 for SDD and 3 for CVD), using three categories of explanatory variables (i.e. (i) only stand size measures, (ii) distribution measures, and (iii) combination of i and ii). The best model was chosen based on smaller relative standard error (RSE), prediction residual sum of squares (PRESS), corrected Akaike Information Criterion ($AIC_c$) and larger coefficient of determination ($R^2$). The results of the LMM indicated that location and plot effects were not significant. The CVD and SDD models having only measures of percentiles (i.e. $P_{24}$ and $P_{93}$) as predictors produced better predictions than others. However, CVD model produced the overall best predictions, because of the lower RSE and stability in measuring variability across different stand developments. The results demonstrate the potentials of CVD in modelling stem diameter variability in relationship with percentiles variables.

  • This paper sought to investigate pupil size variability, pupil size parameters in terms of time domain and frequency domain, the autonomic activity change induced by posture change, degree of sleepiness and cognitive task (math task). With a specially designed pupil image acquisition system in the dark room, these three kinds of experiments were performed to induce a dominant state of sympathetic or parasympathetic activation. Electrocardiogram and pupil size were measured in all the experiments. Based on three experiments, we calculated heart rate variability. In the pupil size analysis, we calculated the mean and standard deviation of pupil size (in time domain), and proposed several frequency bands that exhibit different autonomic activation between different sessions. The results indicate that in terms of heart rate variability, posture change exhibited significant differences but not between sleepiness level, or between cognitive task. Pupil sizes differed only during the postures. And we found some frequency bands that correlated with autonomic activation in each experiment. While heart rate variability reflects posture change that need cardiac control, pupil size variability reflects not only posture induced autonomic activation but sleepiness and cognitive load, which is processed in the brain, in time and frequency domain parameter.

  • A long-term wind resource map was made to provide the key design data for the 2.5 GW Korean West-South Offshore Wind Project, and its reliability was validated. A one-way dynamic downscaling of the MERRA reanalysis meteorological data of the Yeongwang-Gochang offshore was carried out using WindSim, a Computational Fluid Dynamics based wind resource mapping software, to establish a 33-year time series wind resource map of 100 m x 100 m spatial resolution and 1-hour interval temporal resolution from 1979 to 2012. The simulated wind resource map was validated by comparison with wind measurement data from the HeMOSU offshore meteorological tower, the Wangdeungdo Island meteorological tower, and the Gochang transmission tower on the nearby coastline, and the uncertainty due to long-term variability was analyzed. The long-term variability of the wind power was investigated in inter-annual, monthly, and daily units while the short-term variability was examined as the pattern of the coefficient of variation in hourly units. The results showed that the inter-annual variability had a maximum wind index variance of 22.3% while the short-term variability, i.e., the annual standard deviation of the hourly average wind power, was $0.041{\pm}0.001$, indicating steady variability.

  • Cyclic variability limits the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, especially under lean and highly diluted operation conditions. The cyclic combustion variations can be characterized by pressure parameters, combustion related parameters, and flame-front related parameters. The coefficient of variation (COV) in indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) defines the cyclic variability in indicated work per cycle.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of Dangkisoo-san(Dangguixu-san) and Gamihwalhyul-tang(Jiaweihuoxie-tang) herb-medication for the Traffic accident patient group with the effectiveness of common herb-medication for the general patient group by using 7-Zone-Diagnostic System. Two groups were selected from those who took the CP-6000A test in College of Oriental Medical Hospital of Sangji University from March 2007 to January 2008. Mean values of Factor AA on Skin Resistance Variability(SRV) of two groups were compared. The mean values of the deviation between measurement and 50 in pre-examination was higher than those of post-examination. Especially, there were remarkable difference between the mean values of the deviation between measurement and 50 in pre-examination and those of post-examination within the general patient group. When we compare pre-examination with post-examination in each area, 2 areas have remarkable difference within the general patient group. The mean values of positive deviation in pre-examination was higher than those of post-examination within both group. Especially, the TA patient group was remarkable. The other side the mean values of negative deviation in pre-xamination was remarkably higher than those of post-examination within the general patient group. By contraries the mean values of negative deviation in pre-examination was lower than those of post-examination within the TA patient group. These results suggest that Dangkisoo-san(Dangguixu-san) and Gamihwalhyul-tang(Jiaweihuoxie-tang) herb-medication will be less effective for chronic and weak traffic accident patients.
