An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is an industrial post processing facility for high efficiency dust mitigation. Uniformity of the flow passing through the inlet duct leading into the main chamber is important for efficient reduction of dust. To examine flow uniformity, this study conducted a numerical analysis of the flow within a scale-down ESP inlet duct. Magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) results from a prior study were utilized to validate the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) numerical simulations. Both the experimental and computational results displayed a similar recirculation zone shape and normalized velocity profile near the duct outlet for the baseline geometry. To optimize the uniformity of the flow, the number of guide vanes was modified, and the guide vanes were partially extended straight upward. Design evaluation is done based on the outlet velocity distribution and mass flowrate balance between the two outlets. Simulation results indicate that the vane extension is critical for flow optimization in curved ESP ducts.

The purpose of this study is to secure the design data for the optimization of the radial turbine and heat cycle system, by using the CFD analysis technique and the design of 100kW class radial turbine applicable to waste heat recovery generation system for ship. Radial turbine was comprised of scroll casing, vane nozzle with 18 blades and rotor with 13 blades, and analysis grid was used to about 2.3 million. Mass flow rate and rotational speed was 0.5kg/s, 75,0000rpm, respectively. Eight kinds of inlet pressure was set between 195 and 620kPa. As the flow accelerated through the nozzle passage to the throat, the pressure level at the pressure and suction sides becomed similar to about Mach number of 0.35. When the inlet temperature and pressure was $250^{\circ}C$, 352kPa respectively, the isentropic efficiency and mechanical power showed the analysis results of 74% and 108kW.

Unsteady flow simulations through a transonic turbine vane were carried out for an isentropic Mach number of 1.02 and a Reynolds number of $10^6$. The main objective of the study is to investigate the effect of unsteadiness due to vortex shedding on the flow in transonic regime. The steady and the time-averaged unsteady results by employing three different turbulence models: shear stress transport (SST), k-${\omega}$, and ${\omega}$ Reynolds stress models were compared. The comparisons were emphasized on the isentropic Mach number along the blade and total pressure loss at the cascade exit. The results showed that both steady and unsteady calculations have good agreement with experimental data along the blade surface. However, at cascade exit, the unsteady calculations have much better agreement with experimental data than steady calculations. Based on these, we conclude that the unsteady flow calculations are essential for these types of problems.
The steady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed to investigate the flow fields around the seabed tiller used for soil improvement in coastal fisheries and the pulling force and buoyancy generated by tiller operation. The turbulence model used in this study is a realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$. As a results, at a stationary current or a current speed of 1.2 knots, where rotor rotates in a clockwise direction, a typical vortex pair appears near the tip of the rotor except for the edge, and the strength of the vortex pair increases with the number of revolutions of the rotor. The pulling force of the tiller rotating in the counterclockwise direction increases with the number of revolutions. Also, when the current flows at 1.2 knots and the rotor rotates clockwise, the pulling force of the tiller acts on the upstream side irrespective of the number of rotations of the rotor, so that no force is applied. The buoyancy of the tiller acts on the seawater surface if the flow direction inside the rotor is the same as the direction of rotation of the rotor, regardless of the current velocity, otherwise it acts on the seabed.

The effect of relative position of the stationary turbine blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade tip and shroud heat transfer. The local mass transfer coefficients were measured on the tip and shroud fur the blade fixed at six different positions within a pitch. A low speed stationary annular cascade with a single turbine stage was used. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation technique was used for the detailed mass transfer measurements on the tip and the shroud. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is fixed to $1.5{\times}10^5$. The results show that the incoming flow condition and heat transfer characteristics significantly change when the relative position of the blade changes. On the tip, the size of high heat/mass transfer region along the pressure side varies in the axial direction and the difference of heat transfer coefficient is up to 40% in the upstream region of the tip because the position of flow reattachment changes. On shroud, the effect of tip leakage vortex on the shroud as well as tip gap entering flow changes as the blade position changes. Thus, significantly different heat transfer patterns are observed with various blade positions and the periodic variation of heat transfer is expected with the blade rotation.
Experimental studies were carried out to confirm the turbulent enhancement of the cooling system of nuclear reactor by large scale vortex generation in nuclear fuel rod bundle. The large scale vortex motions were generated by rearranging the inclination angles of mixing vanes to the coordinate directions. Experimental studies were carried out at Reynolds Number 60,000 with hydraulic condition. Normal variations of mean velocity and turbulent intensity in the rod bundle subchannel were measured by the 2-color LDV measurement system. The turbulence generated by split mixing vanes has small length scales so that they maintain only about 10DH after the spacer grid. On the other hand, the turbulences generated by the large scale vortex continue more and remain up $25D_{H}$ after the spacer grid.
To examine the influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics, an experiment has been conducted in a four-vane linear cascade. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress were measured using hot wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surfaces liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique was used. The disturbance by the unsteady wake is characterized by the unresolved unsteadiness. The unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion of flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the suction surface increase with increasing unresolved unsteadiness.
The study on the design of pre-swirl stator vanes is performed. The pre-swirl stator vanes is an energy-saving device to improve propulsive performance by providing pre-swirl to the propeller inflow. The theoretical background and the design conditions for pre-swirl stator vanes are presented. The flow characteristics around the pre-swirl stator vanes attached ship hull are analyzed through the experimental method. The technique to determine the optimum location, angle and the number of stator vane is investigated and applied it to 310,000 TBW VLCC The flow velocities are measured using 5-hole Pilot tubes at the condition with and without a propeller.

The hydraulic tests for 16$\times$16 JDFA were performed to obtain the pressure loss coefficients using the FACTS. The pressure loss coefficients are calculated by converting the each properties of experimental values for inlet region, mixing vane grid, outlet region and core region by performing a power fit of the pressure loss coefficient values to the corresponding Reynolds number. The test results are compared with the existing calculated values and evaluated by using the CALOPR code in terms of pressure drop. It is turned out that the differences between the test results and the calculated values are about by 3.8% for the pressure loss coefficients and by 8.5% for the pressure drop.
The present experimental study investigates single-phase heat transfer coefficients downstream of support grid in $6{\times}6$ rod bundles. Support grid with split mixing vanes enhance heat transfer in rod bundles by generating it make turbulence. But this turbulence is confined to short distance. Support grid with LSVF mixing vanes enhanced heat transfer to longer distance. The corresponding Reynolds number investigated in the present study is Re=30,000. The heat transfer coefficients are measured using heated and unheated copper sensor.
