SKD 11 steel has been widely used for tools, metallic mold and die for press working because of its favorable mechanical properties such as high toughness and creep strength as well as excellent oxidation resistance. The ion nitrided tool steel containing Mo results in improvement of corrosion resistance, strength at high temperature and pitting resistance, especially in $Cl^-$ contained environment. But the Mo addition causes a disadvantage such as lower oxidation resistance at elevated temperature. In this study, several effects of ion-disadvantage on the oxidation characteristics for SKD 11 steel with various oxidation temperature were investigated. SKD 11 steels were manufactured by using vacuum furnace and solutionized for 1 hr at $1,050^{\circ}C$. Steel surface was ion nitrided at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr and 5 hr by ion nitriding equipment. ion nitrided specimen were investigated by SEM, OM and hardness tester. Oxidation was carried out by using muffle furnace in air at $500^{\circ}C,\;700^{\circ}C\;and\;900^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, respectively. Oxidation behavior of the ion nitrided specimen was investigated by SEM, EDX and surface roughness tester. The conclusions of this study are as follows: It was found that plasma nitriding for 5 hr at $500^{\circ}C$, compared with ion nitriding for 1 hr at $500^{\circ}C$, had a thick nitrided layer and produced a layer with good wear, corrosion resistance and hardness as nitriding time increased. Nitrided SKD 11 alloy for 1hr showed that wear resistance and hardness decreased, whereas surface roughness increased, compared with nitrided SKD 11 alloy for 5 hr. The oxidation surface at $900^{\circ}C$ showed a good corrosion resistance.
Mercury in spent button type batteries can be separated and recovered with vacuum distillation method. It was found that mercury in the battery began to distill at $150^{\circ}C$ and organic substanced like a packing material was decomposed at$ 300^{\circ}C$. More than 99.9% of mercury contained in the battery was distiled and separated at about $250^{\circ}C$ and 20 torr with 8 hours' reaction time. The dissolution tests of the residue after distillation showed that mercury concentration in the solution were lower than 5 ppb and this values satisfied the environ-mental condition. Also as the furnace heating rate was above $15^{\circ}C$/min, it was found that the spent battery was destroyed because of increased pressure in the battery inside.

Polycrystalline mercuric iodide $HgI_2$) films are being developed as a new detector technology for digital x-ray imaging. The $HgI_2$ is generally vacuum deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. But the PVD thick deposition has been caused any instability in the biasing due to any defects or cracks. In this work we present a new particle-in-binder (PIB) methodologies used for the $HgI_2$ thick films. These growth techniques can be easily extended to produce much larger film areas. This paper, for the first time, presents results and comparison of polycrystalline $HgI_2$ films derived by various PIB methods. We investigated the structural and morphological properties of the films using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The films were characterized with respect to their electrical properties and in response to x-ray photons. Physical and electrical results were also compared between conventional polycrystalline PVD and our detectors. Leakage current as low as $350\;pA/cm^2$ at the bias voltage of ~ 200 V has been observed. And high sensitivity and good linearity in the response to x-rays was obtained in the film derived by PIB sedimentation method. Our future efforts will concentrate on optimization of film growth techniques for uniform large area deposition on image readout arrays.
Inorganic-organic composite thin-film-transistors (TFTs) of ZnO nanowire/Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were investigated by changing the nanowire densities inside the composites. Crystalline ZnO nanowires were synthesized via an aqueous solution method at a low temperature, and the nanowire densities inside the composites were controlled by changing the ultrasonifiaction time. The channel layers were prepared with composites by spin-coating at 2000 rpm, which was followed by annealing in a vacuum at $100^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours. Au/inorganic-organic composite layer/$SiO_2$ structures were fabricated and the mobility, $I_{on}/I_{off}$ ratio, and threshold voltage were then measured to analyze the electrical characteristics of the channel layer. Compared with a P3HT TFT, the electrical properties of TFT were found to be improved after increasing the nanowire density inside the composites. The mobility of the P3HT TFT was approximately $10^{-4}cm^2/V{\cdot}s$. However, the mobility of the ZnO nanowire/P3HT composite TFT was increased by two orders compared to that of the P3HT TFT. In terms of the $I_{on}/I_{off}$ ratio, the composite device showed a two-fold increase compared to that of the P3HT TFT.

Ti scaffolds with a three-dimensional porous structure were successfully fabricated using powder metallurgy and modified rapid prototyping (RP) process. The fabricated Ti scaffolds showed a highly porous structure with interconnected pores. The porosity and pore size of the scaffolds were in the range of 66$\sim$72% and $300\sim400\;\mu$m, respectively. The sintering of the fabricated scaffolds under the vacuum caused the Ti particles to bond to each other. The strength of the scaffolds depended on the layering patterns. The compressive strength of the scaffolds ranged from 15 MPa to 52 MPa according to the scaffolds' architecture. The alkali treatment of the fabricated scaffolds in an aqueous NaOH solution was shown to be effective in improving the bioactivity. The surface of the alkali-treated Ti scaffolds had a nano-sized fibre-like structure. The modified surface showed a good apatite forming ability. The apatite was formed on the surface of the alkali treated Ti scaffolds within 1 day. The thickness of the apatite increased when the soaking time in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution increased. It is expected that the surface modification of Ti scaffolds by alkali treatment could be effective in forming apatites in vivo and can subsequently enhance bone formation.
Treating bulk superalloy scrap with molten zinc has been studled to facililate recycling and recovery- of cobalt.Superalloys investigated were the cobalt-base Mar-M-509 and X45 and the nickel-base Rene 80. Charges withZnlscrap ratlos of 1.5-6.5 were heated to 750-9002 far 1-7.5 hours in a nitrogen atmosphere. The moltenzinc dissolved superalloy scrap and zinc was removed by vacuum distillation at 850-Wk for 4-6 hours. Ithas been concluded that the optimum conditions of decomposition for Mar-M-509 and Rene 80 \"ere dissolutiontemperature of about 850k, Znlscrap ratlo of about 5, and dissalution time of about 5.5 hours. The zinc-treatedsuperalloy prouducts were friable and reacted rapidly with acid solutions. Leaching 9mm pieces of unalloyedMar-M-509 or Rene 80 with 5 times the stolchlometric amount oi 6N HCI at 90t ior 3 hours dissolved about1.5-7.270, while leachmg of the minus 20-mesh products dissolved about 89.0-93.0%.ved about 89.0-93.0%.

Methane, the major constituent of natural gas, had been converted to higher hydrocarbons by microwave and radio-frequency plasma in vacuum condition. Methane had been activated to plasma by suppling high energy then converted to ethane, ethylene, acetylene. The direct conversion process of methane had produced few by-products and demanded low-energy. The plasma sources were microwave and radio-frequency. Two types of reactor had been used to activate methane. One is common single tubular-type reactor and the other is series coil-type reactor which used for the first time in this study. To produce more C2 products, methane had been converted by a plasma and catalyst. The results of this study could be used to study mechanism of plasma reaction of methane, design the plant-scale reactor.
Various alloy system, such as Cu-Sn-Ti, Cu-Ag-Ti, and Ni-B-Cr-based alloy are used for the brazing of diamond grits. However, the problem of the adhesion strength between the diamond grits and the brazed alloy is presented. The adhesion strength between the diamond grits and the melting filler alloy is predicted by the contact angle, thereby, instead of diamond grit, the study on the wettability between the graphite and the brazing alloy has been indirectly executed. In this study, Cu-13Sn-12Ti filler alloy was manufactured, and the contact angles, the shear strengths and the interfacial area between the graphites (diamond grits) and braze matrix were investigated. The contact angle was decreased on increasing holding time and temperature. The results of shear strength of the graphite joints brazed filler alloys were observed that the joints applied Cu-13Sn-12Ti alloy at brazing temperature $940^{\circ}C$ was very sound condition indicating the shear tensile value of 23.8 MPa because of existing the widest carbide(TiC) reaction layers. The micrograph of wettability of the diamond grit brazed filler alloys were observed that the brazement applied Cu-13Sn-12Ti alloy at brazing temperature $990^{\circ}C$ was very sound condition because of existing a few TiC grains in the vicinity of the TiC layers.

We discuss the structural and optical characteristics of GaN nanowires (NWs) grown on Si(111) substrates by a plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. The GaN NWs with high crystal quality were formed by adopting a new growth approach, so called Ga pre-deposition (GaPD) method. In the GaPD, only Ga was supplied without nitrogen flux on a SiN/Si surface, resulting in the formation of Ga droplets. The Ga droplets were used as initial nucleation sites for the growth of GaN NWs. The GaN NWs with the average heights of 60.10 to 214.62 nm obtained by increasing growth time. The hexagonal-shaped top surfaces and facets were observed from the field-emission electron microscope images of GaN NWs, indicating that the NWs have the wurtzite (WZ) crystal structure. Strong peaks of GaN (0002) corresponding to WZ structures were also observed from double crystal x-ray diffraction rocking curves of the NW samples. At room temperature, free-exciton emissions were observed from GaN NWs with narrow linewidth broadenings, indicating to the formation of high-quality NWs.

In this study, the minimized on-board computer (OBC) module for integrated navigation is developed, which provides satellites' relative position information in formation flying and cluster operation situations. The scalability is considered to apply the user-selected wireless communication module and Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver for navigation, while considering to meet the structural design standard of nano-satellites. As a result of the product development and production, the processing speed of integrated navigation and real-time data synchronization is satisfied for cluster operation nano-satellites by using micro controller unit (MCU). From a heat/vacuum, vibration and radiation test, the OBC was confirmed to be operated in space environments. From these results, a mass production system of OBC was made which is a key part of development on satellite formation flying and cluster/constellation missions that the community demands are increasing.
