A study on City and Architecture of the Utopia (유토피아의 도시.건축에 관한 연구)

  • If we take account of the 'Architectural Tradition' which aims a construction of better environment, we can see that this tradition has ended historically toward Utopia. It is a continual trend from ancient Greece to contemporary epoch in each transitional periods and especially in the Renaissance Era. Utopia is an ideal commonwealth in which inhabitants exist under perfect conditions, ideally perfect places or state of things. The plans of utopia are complete projects of image, its goal is an social, political and economical improvement according to the eras. Its plans are characterized by rigid geometrical pattern as circle and square, which contain generally center axis symmetry enclosure. Recent urban and architectural circumstances no longer reflect utopian visions. Since the latter of the 20th century, it appears dystopia on the contrary. Therefore, the utopian ideal city and architecture describes characteristics of the era unlike the continuity of its concept.

  • If we take account of the 'Architectural Tradition' which aims a construction of better environment, we can see that this tradition has ended historically toward Utopia. And the concrete concepts of utopia mainly started on the Renaissance periods. The Utopias were described well in the literatures which contained particularly three representative utopian books in Renaissance period. The one was the most famous novel by Sir Thomas More and the other were by Tommaso Campanella and by Francis Bacon. These novels expressed ideal commonwealths in which inhabitants exist under perfect conditions, ideally perfect places or state of things. The plans of utopia are complete projects of image, its goal is an political, social and economical improvement according to the eras. Their utopias mostly had characteristics as follows; their shape of islands were almost circle, their shape of cities were rectangularity or circle and attached importance to geometrical compositions, their structure of cities were self-sufficiency in closed spaces and their architectural characteristics were uniformity, simplicity and non-ornament. And these architectural characteristics are urban and architectural traditions in communist countries. Also their utopian novels had not much explanations to daily lives of people like as birth, death, relative, mental conflict or authority, money, art. So their utopian novels were not practical and had inappropriate aspects.

  • We have made an effort to build an affluent society since the industrial revolution. But we have just realized that the effort is also spoiling ourselves. Because our wealth has been acquired at the sacrifice of the environment only in which we can live. The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by burning fossil fuels is representing the environment disruption problems. Fortunately our mind ts changing. Many trials are being paid against the increase of carbon dioxide to save our environment. The roll of consulting engineers is to make a keen effort tn each professional field and to appeal the importance of mindtng the environment by giving a clear image of the problems to the public. The aim of the technical development should not be at the convenience of our lives but should be at the decrease of environmental load. That Is a new utopia of technology.nology.

Utopia is an ideal commonwealth in which inhabitants exist under perfect conditions, ideally perfect places or state of things. But, Dystopia implies skeptical perspective on the future which has emerged as a result of the increasing awareness about crisis concerning negative aspects highlighted by progress of science and technology since Modern era. Dystopia is the opposite of Utopia which was a propaganda used by Modern architecture and has characteristics of Post-Modernity. Utopias plans are complete projects of image, its goal is an improvement according to the eras. Its plans are characterized by rigid geometrical pattern as circle and square, which contain generally center·axis·enclosure·boundary·symmetry. Recent architectural circumstances no longer reflect utopian visions. Dystopias plans have described extreme mechanism, destructive offense, expression of fragmentation and differentiation in contemporary architecture. Therefore, as the Utopian architecture describes characteristics of the era unlike the continuity of its concept, the Dystopian architecture will find its expression differently while maintaining its basic concept and intention.

  • High Tech Design manner is a design concept that had been constantly discussed in constitution process of the West art history and modem ideology and had been experimented in industry, having started from futurism and structuralism in the early 20th century through Kinetic Art & Technology Art and up to now. High Tech Design had a great influence also on Post Modernism and more important is that this manner of design will be existing continually in the future too. From the modem times when machine civilization started, the artist and designers expressed a utopia will showing the future world with help of High Tech Design and modem people are realizing technology images as a utopia, in the space and material presented by this high tech design. And this utopia imply the images of dynamic power, speed making a voyage in universe, dream of future, hope, mass production, earth's environment, wealth etc. High Tech furniture was lightly designed by using thin steel wire, structure stressing the metallic characteristic and tempered glass, and it was used for presenting a convenient interior space visually, and with that it can make a unified sense in High Tech interior space, and a contrary effect compared with minimal space. High Tech Design equipped with glass and metal materials looking inappropriate for our interior space due to their sharp and cold image has been regularly used as living furniture, not only decoration function, and then there must be reasons for that. This study intends to research how High Tech Design has been changed and developed in the design history & West art history from the early 20th century, and to present it's value of development as data orienting, namely a direction for the industry of the next-generation and furniture design.

  • This study aims to analyze contemporary women's sense of fashion aesthetic by looking into the design and trend of T-panties, which have now carved out a new niche in the world's 21st century female underwear markets. By this, I'd like to reassure readers of the importance of T-panties, which has only been recently recognized, and more generally suggests the future direction of prominent T-panty design development. First, western urban chic, Japanese minimalism and domestic modern feminine images all have common modern urban sense and simple designs. However, each image is not a simple image in itself. For example, in the case of western style they often seek to convey a sophisticated and stylish street sense, while Koreans add a more cute, lovely, and feminine touch. Second, western restrained eroticism, Japanese fetishism and domestic mono-bosom images all have a common interest in sex. They is something, however, which they all express this differently. In Japan, they prefer a stimulating image. In the West, however, this is restrained by controlling and limiting overt sexual elements, while in Korea, we seek to capture a more simple sensual beauty. Third, western couture luxury, Japanese orientalism and Korean utopia narcissism have classy images in common including splendid materials and decorations with embroidery. Images of Costumes in Science Fiction Movies (공상 과학 영화에 나타난 복식이미지)

  • This study is intended to examine the common features of costume images in science-fiction (SF) movies that deal with current socio-cultural situations by examining their themes and tones about the future it can be generally concluded that costume images of SF movies are divided into two patterns : one inheriting traditional styles constructed on linear progress and the other based on dismantiling the tradition. this analysis is made through the research of actual cinematic contexts on the common features of multiple styles shaping the two patterns of costume images. The results can be summarized as the following: The former is related with the future built up on the basis of belief in reasonal progress rooted in the Enlightenment reasonable plan for ideal social order and strong faith in uniformity. So It shows functional uniformity disregarding wasteful competitiveness in consumption and luxuriousness and clothing that has the aesthetic value of purity without emphasizing human body or sensuality are presented. On the other hand SF movies which show the uncertain costume image as the meaning of dismantling of tradition take up a rather critical view of assumption that society can move toward utopian future as it searches future images in the notion of hetero-topia by emphasizing pluralism consequently as for clothing diversity and uncertainty in post-modern style are presented destroying modernistic dichotomy and the assumption of Utopian clothing made in the notion of modern progressivism.

  • This paper is an attempt to explain the interpretation of P. Ricoeur on the theory of power of Saint Paul. P. Ricoeur tried to reinterpret Saint Paul's thoughts on the power of a nation, the purpose being to link this theory to salvation through the social system. Ricoeur expands this interpretation of political power to the economy and culture. The basis of these ideas is the 'imago Dei' namely the image of God. I would like to consider the image of God as the key to salvation through social system, politics, economy, and culture.

  • The meaning of light is not always developed aspect in process of architecture history as essence worth of the architecture. It means that architectural light is not affected simple development of civilization, but it has more complex aspect. The technology of applying architecture has continuous development of society that light is possible to extend quantity by development of technology because light is component not simple material or tools but strong worthy aspect, quality development of architecture comes true by exact understanding and application. Conversion from medieval society to modern society begins at the Industrial Revolution has new skills and materials, the architectural conform general space filled with non-characteristic light, and it gives rising to pursuit Utopia is not exist frequently. In result, light of metaphysical meaning is diminished and exterminated. In other hand light seems to be tools by development of technology in modern society, recovering its own meaning in other aspect. That light makes perfect image of architecture not by finite meaning only for simple space but by expressing strongly point that unify the whole architectural composition. Light is free from partial material of architecture. Light activates major composition through high-technology, and has possibility to carry out the essential worth animate architecture. The light expresses relative speciality for sense of place recognizes major component which the human being lives in and conform the real meaning of architecture.

Fetishist Characteristics and Aesthetic Values of Glamour Style (글래머 스타일의 물신주의적 특성과 미적 가치)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the fetishist characteristics and the aesthetic values of glamour style based on the premise that fetishism is the theoretical root of glamour style expressed in fashion throughout history. The following results are from analysing fetishist characteristics of glamour style. First, luxury was analysed from an angle of commodity fetishism. Every culture develops images and stories that portray a world in which its ideals are realized: a paradise, a utopia, a golden age, etc. Consumer goods often serve as 'bridges to these ideals'. People thus can fantasize about owning the perfect life. Crucially, however, they must never get everything they picture. That is why luxuries often take on displaced meaning. Glamour gives the displaced meaning visual form, making it beautiful and real. Second, the attention on the glamour of luxury goods as a bridge to ideals is connected to the glamour icon who is simultaneously a consumer of these luxury goods and a producer of cultural goods. Glamour icons including the courtesan of the late 19th century, the actress of the 1930s' Hollywood golden age and today's celebrities appear to efface the traces of production and create fetishist images in culture. Through this artificial principle, the commodity-cum-glamour icon comes to life as a splendid image of spectacle. Third, masquerade and seduction were analysed from an angle of sexual fetishism. A magnificent image of masquerade as sexual fetishism is often equated with femininity, especially in Hollywood movies, because the artificial seduction of the feminine -namely glamour- can be effected by the absence or silence of being. That is to say, the aesthetic revelation of femininity coincides with the fleshing out of artificial signs. Masquerade and the seduction of the feminine are connected with glamour's artificial sensuality from this point. Fourth, since 1980's when homosexuality as sexual deviation resurfaced as a hot topic, sexual ambiguity and bisexual image have gained attention as perverse sexuality. Next came queer theory, which reduced gender itself to a matter of surface rather than depth. According to queer theory, gender itself can be revealed as a kind of drag act. Drag's imitative performance may reveal that womanliness is just about 'dragging up'. Queerness as a decadent play makes a connection with the wicked origins of glamour. From these characteristics, four aesthetic values were deduced: ostentatious luxury and mysterious idolatry by commodity fetishism, artificial sensuality and playful queerness by sexual fetishism.
