  • This article deals with variable selection problem under a newly formed predictive heteroscedastic discriminant rule that accounts for mulitple homogeneous covariance matrices across the K multivariate normal populations. A general version of predictive discriminant rule, a variable selection criterion, and a criterion for stopping with further selection are suggested. In a simulation study the practical utilities of those considered are demonstrated.

  • Abnormalities of structure and morphology of chromosomes concentrated with genetic materials, DNA, are directly related to phenotypical performances of animals. So, cytogenetical research in domestic animals is important to prevent congenital deformity and improve genetic performances. Especially utilities of egg transfer technique combined with cytogenetical study can be accelerated by the wide spread of the best genetic sources dependent on the micromanipulation and sexing of eggs.

  • Utilities are trying to install the equipment of high quality to avoid deterioration of supply reliability. In addition, many sectionalizing switches which can decrease the total outage value for a fault are installed for the same reason. Therefore, utilities are interested in stun dards and criteria for installing switches to optimize the total cost on distribution systems. The affect of sectionalizing switches installed on distribution feeder is gradually decreased because the failure rate on distribution feeder is decreased. Also the automation for distribution systems is widely applied for the efficient operation. Therefore, the renewal for installation standards of sectionalizing switches Is required to reflect the current operation situation. The variable data is used to consider the KEPCO's real situation of distribution feeder as follows; the feeder capacity, connecting rate, feeder length, failure rate of distribution feeder, the failure rate of switches, perception time of feeder fault, the restoration time for a faulted section, the transfer time to other feeders, and the switching time. In this study, We propose equations which can determine the number of sectionalizing switches for minimizing the outage and switch installation cost.

  • Oil sands are a mixture of sand, clay, and a high-viscosity petroleum called bitumen. Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is the most viable and environmentally safe recovery technology for extracting bitumen. It extracts the viscosity-lowered bitumen by high pressure, high temperature steam injected into the bitumen reservoir. The steam is produced at the Central Processing Facility (CPF). Typically, more than 90% of the energy consumed in producing bitumen are used to generate the steam. Fuels are employed in the process, which cause economic and environmental problems. This paper explores the retrofit of heat exchanger network to reduce the usage of hot and cold utilities. The hot and cold utilities are reduced respectively 6% and 37.3% which in turn resulted in 5.3% saving of total annual cost by improving the existing heat exchanger network of the CPF.

  • Isozyme and AFLP analyses were examined to estimate the utilities of them as a genetic marker. The utilities were evaluated by genetic divergence and relationships among the four distinct abalone species; Haliotis discus hannai collected from northeast coast of Japan and Yellow-Sea coast of China, H. rufescens collected from west coast of USA, H rubra collected from southeast coast of Australia and H midae collected from Cape Town of South Africa. Isozyme and AFLP analyses showed a clear genetic divergence between every pair of species. Genetic relationships among the low species estimated by isozyme and AFLP analyses reflected to geographical distribution and morphological characteristics. In conclusion, Isozyme and AFLP analyses are suitable genetic markers far estimates of genetic divergence and relationship among abalone species.

  • This study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical characteristics of flowable backfill and search for the optimal mixture contents of it used for constructing underground power utilities. flowable backfill is known as soil-cement slurry, void fill, and controlled low-strength material(CLSM). The benefits of CLSM include reduced equipment costs, faster construction, re-excavation in the future, and the ability to place material in confined spaces such as narrow parts nearly impossible for compaction or perimeter of underground power cables. The flowable slurry mixture made with 9 types of soil and 6 types of accelerated mixtures in the laboratory were evaluated for bleeding, flowability, heat resistance, and unconfined compressive strength to meet the aim values of this study.

  • Both simulation and physical implementation are valuable tasks in sensor network routing protocols. In this paper, we propose an efficient underground utilities monitoring method within several constraints using wireless sensor network. First, in order to physically implement protocol of network which is applied, the distributed event-based simulation, which applies an existing nesC codes of sensor network routing protocols, is implemented and analyzed. Also, we have performed the simulation and analyzed the execution results for application model of routing protocols for monitoring underground utilities in the VIPTOS(Visual Ptolemy and TinyOS) environments which combine TOSSIM and Ptolemy II based on distributed event.

  • Conjoint Analysis is marketers' favorite methodology for finding out how buyers make trade-offs among competing products and suppliers. Thousands of applications of conjoint analysis have been carried out over the past three decades. The conjoint analysis has been so popular as a management decision tool due to the availability of a choice simulator. A conjoint simulator enables managers to perform 'what if' question accompanying the output of a conjoint study. Traditionally the First Choice Model (FCM) has been widely used as a choice simulator. The FCM is simple to do, easy to understand. In the FCM, the probability of an alternative is zero until its value is greater than others in the set. Once its value exceeds that threshold, however, it receives 100%. The LOGIT simulation model, which is also called as "Share of Preference", has been used commonly as an alternative of the FCM. In the model part worth utilities aren't required to be positive. Besides, it doesn't require part worth utilities computed under LOGIT model. The simulator can be used based on regression, monotone regression, linear programming, and so on. However, it is not free from the Independent from Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) problem. This paper proposes the EBA (Elimination-By-Aspects) model as a useful conjoint-like method. One advantage of the EBA model is that it models choice in terms of the actual psychological processes that might be taking place. According to EBA, when choosing from choice objects, a person chooses one of the aspects that are effective for the objects and eliminates all objects which do not have this aspect. This process continues until only one alternative remains.
