  • The purpose of this study is to investigate typical ethical problems found in the technical and public services areas. The followings are the summary of the study. There are three distinct elements that govern ethical problems. One element is legal laws. The copyright law and the privacy act are exact examples. The copyright law has strong influence on the inter library loan service where the majority requests from the users are reproduction of copies. The privacy act also creates difficulties for librarians. Most requests for circulation records infringe on the privacy of library user. And advance online access systems also violates the privacy of library users. The second element is the code or rules that private organization has created. American Library Association created many statements that regulate the conduct of librarians. The bill of right, the professional code of ethics and policy on the confidentiality of library records have strong implications in the obligation of librarian. In the case of censorship at the selection of library materials, the code is a defensive tool against intellectual freedom. Yet self-censoring are prevailing practice among librarians. The thirds element is the competence of librarians. The analyzed table 3 showed that beside two elements, the rest of matters are competence required by librarians. The one aspect of it is humaneness and the other one is technical aspects. Technical aspect of competence are:(l) managerial and operational ability (2) communication skill (3) leadership (4) structure of knowledge and (5) self developing professionalism. Humanity aspect of competence are:(l) trust(fiduciary relationship) gained by diligence, objective judgement, ability, belief, rationality, integrity, kindness) (2) objectiveness (free from bias) (3) user-oriented consideration (need, interest, equal treatment, information gap) (4) caution in providing information (5) pride and (6) ability to distinguish advice and guidance specially in medical and law library.

  • In this paper, numerical methods for wrinkle prediction of thin membrane were studied by finite element analysis. Techniques using membrane and shell elements were applied for triangular membrane. In case of membrane element method, the wrinkling was accounted for by the wrinkle algorithm of property modification, which was implemented to ABAQUS as a user subroutine. In case of shell method, geometrically nonlinear post-buckling analysis was performed to obtain the wrinkle deformation explicitly. The wrinkling deformation was induced by seeding the mesh with a random geometric imperfection. The results were investigated focusing on the mesh convergence and the solution accuracy.

  • In this work, a novel artificial circular muscle based on shape memory alloy (S.M.A.) is proposed. The design is inspired from the natural circular muscles found in certain organs of the human body such as the small intestine. The heating of the prestrained SMA artificial muscle will induce its contraction. In order to measure the mechanical work provided in this case, the muscle will be mounted on a silicone rubber cylindrical tube prior to heating. After cooling, the reaction of the rubber tube will involve the return of the muscle to its prestrained state. A finite element model of the new SMA artificial muscle was built using the software "ABAQUS". The SMA thermomechanical behavior law was implemented using the user subroutine "UMAT". The numerical results of the finite element analysis of the SMA muscle are presented to shown that the proposed design is able to mimic the behavior of a natural circular muscle.

  • NiTi alloy known as its shape memory effect also has superelastic characteristic, which makes it possible to be elastic under large deformation. Since the tensile strength of the alloy is very high and density is low compared to carbon steel, it can be applied to lightweight structural design. In order to design structures with shape memory alloy, finite element analysis is used and a constitutive algorithm based on Aurrichio's model is added to LS-DYNA as a user subroutine. Explicit time integration and shell element formulation are used to simulate thin-walled structures. The algorithm uses Drucker-Prager type loading condition to calculate martensite volume fraction during the transformation. The implemented algorithm is verified in uni-axial loading condition and martensite phase transformation can be detected well with the algorithm. In this study, as a energy absorbing structure, thin-walled tube is modeled with finite elements and the deformation behavior is studied. Simulation results has shown that the martensite transformation was generated in loading condition. After plastic deformation reached, the load decreases linearly without reverse martensite transformation.

  • As various styles of fonts were used, there were problems such as output errors due to uninstalled fonts and difficulty in font recognition. To solve these problems, research on font recognition and recommendation were actively conducted. However, Hangul font research remains at the basic level. Therefore, in order to automate the comparison on Hangul font similarity in the future, we analyze the influence of each stroke element property. First, we select seven representative properties based on Hangul stroke shape elements. Second, we design a calculation model to compare similarity between fonts. Third, we analyze the effect of each stroke element through the cosine similarity between the user's evaluation and the results of the model. As a result, there was no significant difference in the individual effect of each representative property. Also, the more accurate similarity comparison was possible when many representative properties were used.

  • This paper presents the results of investigating the change in welding residual stresses of the core shroud, which is one of subcomponents in reactor vessel internals, performing finite element analysis. First, the welding residual stresses of the core shroud were calculated by applying the heat conduction based lumped pass technique and finite element elastic-plastic stress analysis. Second, the temperature distribution of the core shroud during the normal operation was calculated by performing finite element temperature analysis considering gamma heating. Third, through the finite element viscoelastic-plastic stress analysis using the calculated temperature distribution and setting the calculated residual stresses as the initial stress state, the variation of the welding residual stresses was derived according to repeating the normal operation. In the viscoelastic-plastic stress analysis, the effects of neutron irradiation on mechanical properties during the cyclic normal operations were considered by using the previously developed user subroutines for the irradiation agings such as irradiation hardening/embrittlement, irradiation-induced creep, and void swelling. Finally, the effect of neutron irradiation on the welding residual stresses was analysed for each irradiation aging. As a result, it is found that as the normal operation is repeated, the welding residual stresses decrease and show insignificant magnitudes after the 10th refueling cycle. In addition, the irradiation-induced creep/void swelling has significant mitigation effect on the residual stresses whereas the irradiation hardening/embrittlement has no effect on those.

  • ANSYS is a software well accepted by professionals and academics, since it provides a variety of finite elements, material constitutive models, and linear and nonlinear analysis of structures in general. For the concrete material, for instance, the software uses an elastoplastic model with the Willam-Warnke surface of rupture (1975). However, this model is only available for finite elements that do not offer the possibility of use of the element-embedded model for rebars, demanding a much larger amount of elements to discretize structures, making numerical solutions less efficient. This study is, therefore, about the development of a computational model using the Finite Element Method via ANSYS platform for nonlinear analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams under plane stress states. The most significant advantage of this implementation is the possibility of using the element-embedded rebar model in ANSYS with its 2D eight-node quadratic element PLANE183 for discretization of the concrete together with element REINF263 for discretization of rebars, stirrups, and cables, making the solutions faster and more efficient. For representation of the constitutive equations of the steel and the concrete, a proposed model was implemented with the help of the UPF customization tool (User Programmable Features) of ANSYS, where new subroutines written in FORTRAN were attached to the main program. The numerical results are compared with experimental values available in the technical literature to validate the proposed model, with satisfactory results being found.
