The aim of this study was to predict the results of superplastic forming on magnesium alloy, by considering the grain growth using numerical simulations. Superplastic behavior of AZ31 alloy was investigated through a set of uniaxial tensile tests that cover the forming temperatures ranges from 375 to $450^{\circ}C$. All the material parameters in the model, which consists of a constitutive equation and a grain growth equation, were determined. The model was used in the finite element analysis for uniaxial tensile tests and superplastic blow forming, through a user-subroutine available within ABAQUS. From this study, the effect of grain growth during forming was evaluated. The results show that it is essential to include the effect of grain growth in predicting the behavior during superplastic forming of this magnesium alloy.

Nd:YAG pulse laser welding of stainless steel plate was simulated to find welding condition by using commercial finite element code MARC. Due to geometric symmetry, a half model of AISI 304 stainless steel plate was considered and user subroutines were applied to boundary condition for the heat transfer. Material properties such as conductivity, specific heat, mass density and latent heat were given as a function of temperature. As results, Three dimensional heat source model for pulse laser beam conditions of butt welding has been designed by the comparison between the finite element analysis results and experimental data on AISI 304 stainless steel plate. Nd:YAG laser welding for AISI 304 stainless steel was successfully simulated and it should be useful to determine optimal welding condition.

Computational procedures associated with finite element nonlinear analysis of plane frame structures were examined and new solution schemes were suggested. Element stiffness matrix was derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Geometric and material nonlinearities were considered in the formulation. Solution method was based upon the constant displacement length method in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method. New solution schemes were introduced in determining the initial load increment and the sign of load increments and predicting the length of displacement increment to improve user convenience, efficiency and stability. Numerical experiments were performed for several typical problems and suggested schemes were found efficient and convenient for analyzing nonlinear frame structures.
This study investigates the ultimate behavior of reinforced concrete beams by means of practical nonlinear finite element (FE) analyses. Uniaxial constitutive models for the concrete and steel material are selected in this study. The adopted material model is integrated into the ABAQUS fiber beam elements through a user-defined material subroutine (UMAT). Within a developed nonlinear finite element framework, the FE results have been compared to experimental results reported by other researchers. It has been found that the proposed finite element model is capable of predicting the initial cracking load level, the yield load, the ultimate load, and the crack distribution with acceptable accuracy.

In this paper, a computer simulation technique for the forging process having a floating die is presented. The penalty rigid-plastic finite element method is employed together with an iteratively force-balancing method, in which the convergence is achieved when the floating die part is in force equilibrium within the user-specified tolerance. The force balance is controled by adjusting the velocity of the floating die in an automatic manner. An application example of a three-stage cold forging process is given.

This paper provides the methods to estimate the burst pressures of the pipes with defects, based on finite element analyses. FE codes are frequently adopted for the simulations of the burst tests of the pipes with defects. However, those do not give the burst pressure directly. Because the post-processing should be followed; determination of the fracture strains in accordance with triaxialities, monitoring the strains of pipes, etc. In the present work, these efforts are implemented in the user subroutine UHARD within the general-purpose FE code, ABAQUS. Four fracture criterions are introduced to estimate the burst pressure of pipes, and a simple fracture strain estimate is also developed. FE analyses for the pipe with gouge and corrosion are performed, and the results are compared with the experiment results.

Rate-independent crystal plasticity model suffers from the non-uniqueness of activated slip systems and the determination of the shear slip rates on the active slip systems. In this paper, a time-integration algorithm which circumvents the problem of the multiplicity of the slip systems was developed and implemented into the user subroutine VUMAT of a commercial finite element program ABAQUS. The magnitude of the slip shears on the active slip systems in f.c.c Cu single crystal aligned with the specific crystallographic orientation was investigated to validate our solution procedure. Also, texture developments under various deformation modes such as simple compression, simple tension and plane strain compression were compared with the results of the rate-dependent model by using the rate-independent crystal plasticity model. The computation time employing the rate-independent model is much more reduced than the those of the rate-dependent model.
The available analytical methods of analysis for laterally loaded piles in level ground cannot be directly applied to such piles in sloping ground. With the commercially available software, the simulation of the appropriate field condition is a challenging task, and the results are subjective. Therefore, it becomes essential to understand the process of development of a user-framed numerical formulation, which may be used easily as per the specific site conditions without depending on other indirect methods of analysis as well as on the software. In the present study, a detailed three-dimensional finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of laterally loaded piles in sloping ground developing the 18 node triangular prism elements. An application of the numerical formulation has been illustrated for the pile located at the crest of the slope and for the pile located at some edge distance from the crest. The specific examples show that at any given depth, the displacement and bending moment increase with an increase in slope of the ground, whereas they decrease with increasing edge distance.

In this study, pre-postprocessing toolbox is developed to perform elasto-plastic analyze of underground structures with transient ground water flow. This toolbox is composed of three modules. The first is the data input processor for the structural analysis. The preprocessing Is using GUI (Graphic User Interface), which is consist of dialog box, pull down, and short-cut icon, etc. The second is the structural analysis module. The analysis is based on the elasto-plastic finite element method involving additional options such as ground excavation effect, transient ground water flow, and rock bolts behavior. The last is the postprocessing module. The postprocessing is able to verify the result of the structural analysis by the graphical simulation which visualizes the element mesh, the node displacements, the element stress states, the stress contour, the ground water surface, and the rock bolt stresses. Since various options are considered separately in this toolbox, it is easy to modify the module of each processing, and to update other functional modules for the given analysis conditions.
