  • Collaborative filtering has been most popular approach to recommend items in online recommender systems. However, collaborative filtering is known to suffer from data sparsity problem. As a simple way to overcome this problem in literature, Jaccard index has been adopted to combine with the existing similarity measures. We analyze performance of such combination in various data environments. We also find optimal weights of factors in the combination using a genetic algorithm to formulate a similarity measure. Furthermore, optimal weights are searched for each user independently, in order to reflect each user's different rating behavior. Performance of the resulting personalized similarity measure is examined using two datasets with different data characteristics. It presents overall superiority to previous measures in terms of recommendation and prediction qualities regardless of the characteristics of the data environment.

  • Social Networks which is composed of network with an individual in the center in a web support mutual-understanding of information by searching user profile and forming new link. Therefore, if we apply the Social Network which consists of web users who have similar immanent information to web search, we can improve efficiency of web search and satisfaction of web user about search results. In this paper, first, we make a Social Network using web users linked directly or indirectly. Next, we calculate Similarity among web users using their immanent information according to topics, and then reconstruct Social Network based on varying Similarity according to topics. Last, we compare Similarity with Search Pattern. As a result of this test, we can confirm a result that among users who have high relationship index, that is, who have strong link strength according to personal attributes have similar search pattern. If such fact is applied to search algorithm, it can be possible to improve search efficiency and reliability in personalized and social search.

  • Program similarity analysis consists of substantial similarity and access. Substantial similarity is a judgment of how similarly the program source code is quantitatively. Access determines the degree of similarity by analyzing comments in the program or other contextual evidence. In the case of manuals, it may be the subject of legitimacy analysis. Manuals can be divided into three types as follows. First, a master manual is a document created during the development stage of a product. It is a user manual that contains all the functionality of the product and its derivatives. Second, the customer manual is a manual that is open only to the primary customer and orderer. Third, the user manual is a document that is applied to the final OEM production stage and is open to the end purchaser. In this paper, we compare the master manual seized from the suspect and the master manual provided by the suspect on the Internet. It then determines how similar this master manual is and includes the victim company's original and property values.

  • Measuring similarity in collaborative filtering-based recommender systems greatly affects system performance. This is because items are recommended from other similar users. In order to overcome the biggest problem of traditional similarity measures, i.e., data sparsity problem, this study suggests a new similarity measure that is the optimal combination of previous similarity and the value reflecting the number of co-rated items. We conducted experiments with various conditions to evaluate performance of the proposed measure. As a result, the proposed measure yielded much better performance than previous ones in terms of prediction qualities, specifically the maximum of about 7% improvement over the traditional Pearson correlation and about 4% over the cosine similarity.

  • User adaptive services have been important features in many applications. To provide such services, various techniques with various kinds of data are being used. In this paper, we propose a method to analyze user's past moving paths for predicting the goal position and the path to the goal by observing the user's current moving path. We develop a spatio-temporal similarity measure between paths. We choose a past path which is the most similar to the current path using the similarity. Based on the chosen path, user's spatio-temporal position is estimated. Through experiments we confirm this method is useful and effective.

  • Many of the current successful commercial recommender systems utilize collaborative filtering techniques. This technique recommends products to the active user based on product preference history of the neighbor users. Those users with similar preferences to the active user are typically named his/her neighbors. Hence, finding neighbors is critical to performance of the system. Although much effort for developing similarity measures has been devoted in the literature, there leaves a lot to be improved, especially in the aspect of handling subjectivity or vagueness in user preference ratings. This paper addresses this problem and presents a novel similarity measure using fuzzy logic for selecting neighbors. Experimental studies are conducted to reveal that the proposed measure achieved significant performance improvement.

  • In this paper, we evaluate performance of existing similarity measurement metric and propose a novel method using user's preferences information entropy to reduce MAE in memory-based collaborative recommender systems. The proposed method applies a similarity of individual inclination to traditional similarity measurement methods. We experiment on various similarity metrics under different conditions, which include an amount of data and significance weighting from n/10 to n/60, to verify the proposed method. As a result, we confirm the proposed method is robust and efficient from the viewpoint of a sparse data set, applying existing various similarity measurement methods and Significance Weighting.

  • In this paper, we propose a semantic similarity measure for reusable software components, which aims to provide the automatic classification process of reusable to be stored in the structure of a software library, and to provide an efficient retrieval method of the software components satisfying the user's requirements. We have identified the facets to represent component characteristics by extracting information from the component descriptions written in a natural language, composed the software component identifiers from the automatically extracted terms corresponding to each facets, and stored them which the components in the nearest locations according to the semantic similarity of the classified components. In order to retrieve components satisfying user's requirements, we measured a semantic similarity between the queries and the stored components in the software library. As a result of using the semantic similarity to retrieve reusable components, we could not only retrieve the set of components satisfying user's queries. but also reduce the retrieval time of components of user's request. And we further improve the overall retrieval efficiency by assigning relevance ranking to the retrieved components according to the degree of query satisfaction.

  • When existing parts are re-used for the development of a new product or business-to-business transactions, a method for searching parts from a part database that meets user's requirements is necessary. To this end, it is important to develop a part search method which is able to measure similarity between parts and user's input data with generality as well as robustness. In this paper, the authors suggest a method for measuring part similarity using ontology and multi-criteria decision making method and address its technical details. The proposed method ensures the interoperability with existing engineering information management systems, represents part specifications systematically, and has generality in the procedure for comparing part specifications. The case study for ejector pins having been conducted to demonstrate the proposed method is also discussed.
